Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will build to the north of the area
today. An area of low pressure will move across the area late
tonight then quickly move northeast on Christmas Day while
intensifying. Arctic high pressure will build toward the area
for much of the week. A coastal low may affect the area late in
the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...Plenty of high clouds this
morning with some stratus seen to the southeast. A few spots are
experiencing clear skies early this morning, but dense cirrus
associated with an upper level jet will traverse the area later
this morning with skies remaining cloudy for much of the day.
It will remain dry for much of the day, but it will be
significantly cooler than yesterday due to cold advection on
northerly winds.

Light precip will start working northward early this evening as
an upper level disturbance and associated low pressure move
across the area tonight. Precip shifts quickly to the northeast
late tonight as low pres moves quickly out of the area except in
the upslope areas. Given strengthening NW flow and increasing
low-lvl instability, a few snow showers could make it as far
east as the Rt 15 corridor. East of the area, bdry layer temps
will likely be too warm for any snow and precip would have
exited the area by the time it gets really cold. It will become
windy after 09Z with wind advisory conditions likely over the
mtns and spreading east on Christmas Day as cold advection
strengthens.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...

Strong cold air advection through the first half of the day
under brisk NW winds gusting well over 40 mph. A wind advisory
may be required for the northern half of the fcst area and along
the Blue Ridge and areas to the west. Winds begin to diminish in
the afternoon and snow showers taper off in the mtns. Cold Mon
night and Tue under building Arctic high pressure. Jet streak
cirrus will keep the area cloudy Mon night and Tue.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Broadly cyclonic flow aloft will encompass the continent east of the
Rockies through the end of the week. On Wednesday, a weak
disturbance will be departing, with the Arctic high moving into the
upper Great Lakes. Dry weather can be expected with below normal
temperatures. The high will continue eastward on Thursday and begin
to wedge down the eastern side of the Appalachians. Guidance is in
good agreement that high temperatures will fail to reach the
freezing mark across the majority of the region.

Run to run model variability remains high for the end of the week.
Given the upper level flow and subsequent forcing for surface low
pressure development are being driven by smaller scale shortwaves,
such disagreement is likely to continue until atmospheric
perturbations are better resolved at shorter time scales. Looking at
the 00Z suite of guidance, there remains support for /some/ snow
within the greater region, but with lower local probabilities than
some previous model runs. It is still much too early to latch onto
any one scenario. So as we have mentioned the past couple of days,
the late Thursday through Saturday time period will need to be
monitored. What is certain is that temperatures will remain below
normal, with lows in the teens and 20s and highs in the upper 20s to
mid 30s.

.AVIATION /09Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Some stratus clouds are observed this morning creating MVFR
conditions. Not sure how long the MVFR conditions will last as
guidance do not have a good handle on it. Light rain except snow
at MRB and MVFR cigs return again tonight as low pres crosses
the area. Becoming breezy to windy late tonight and Christmas
Day with gusts up to 40kt possible.

Wednesday will most likely feature VFR conditions as high pressure
builds into the area. The same can be said for Thursday, although
clouds may begin to lower depending on how close low pressure is to
the area.

.MARINE...Winds will diminish through this evening under 10kt,
but strengthen again late tonight and Mon. Gale warning now in
effect for Christmas Day for gusts up to 45 kt.

As high pressure builds to the north, winds will become northerly on
Wednesday and northeasterly on Thursday. While wind speeds will be
15 kt or less most of the time, will have to watch for northerly
channeling on the Bay Wednesday night.
