.SYNOPSIS...
A strong, slow-moving cold front will work its way across the
region today from west to east. Low pressure will develop along
the boundary, and undergo explosive cyclogenesis as it moves to
our northeast tonight. The low will track into Canada Monday and
high pressure will build to our south. A weak reinforcing cold
front will pass through Monday night into Tuesday and high
pressure will return for late Tuesday before moving offshore
Wednesday and Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A cold front is currently located over the Shenandoah Valley
early this morning. Potent upper-level low is closing off in a
trough to our west and a southerly flow ahead of the cold front
continues to transport plenty of moisture into our area.
The cold front will slowly pass through the area today...passing
through the Shenandoah Valley this morning and the Washington
and Baltimore Metropolitan areas this afternoon. Plenty of
moisture and shortwave energy will cause periods of rain through
midday. The upper-level low will continue to close off this
afternoon and this will cause surface low pressure to develop
and strengthen just to the east of the cold front. The
deformation zone and low-level convergence from cyclogenesis
will cause a soaking rain to develop later this afternoon into
this evening. The low will rapidly intensify as it moves into
New England tonight and drier air will return from southwest to
northeast behind this system. Note that blustery and much colder
conditions are expected behind the front. Temps in the 60s ahead
of the front will fall into the 40s behind the front.
Due to the rapidly strengthening low...a strong pressure
gradient will develop tonight and this will cause strong winds.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for northern Virginia...the
Shenandoah Valley...eastern West Virginia...most of Maryland and
the Washington and Baltimore Metropolitan areas. Wind gusts
around 50 mph are expected across these areas. The strongest
winds will be tonight across the higher elevations and late this
evening and overnight across the rest of the area. The gradient
will not be quite as strong in central Virginia and the Virginia
Piedmont so a wind advisory has not been issued at this time.
Also...colder air from the strengthening upper-level low will
cause temperatures to drop to near and below freezing across the
ridge tops above 3000 feet this afternoon. Rain will change to
a wintry mix this afternoon before eventually changing to all
snow this evening. Wrap around moisture and an upslope component
to the low-level flow will likely cause a period of moderate
snow for these areas. Snowfall accumulations around 2 to 5
inches are most likely and a light glaze of ice from freezing
rain is possible as well. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect
for western Grant...western Pendleton and western Highland
counties. Elsewhere across the Potomac Highlands rain may end as
a period of snow/sleet tonight but temps should be above
freezing for most areas. Any snow accumulations will be light
and confined mainly above 2000 feet.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Low pressure will quickly move away from the area into eastern
Canada and high pressure will build to the south. Winds will
diminish some...but it will still be breezy. A downsloping flow
along with subsidence behind the departing low will cause dry
conditions along with sunshine.
A weak reinforcing cold front will pass through Monday night
into Tuesday...but not moisture will be associated with it so it
will have little impact on the weather. High pressure will
return for later Tuesday into Tuesday night.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure moves offshore on Wednesday with deep southerly
flow beginning to spread moisture northward all the way from
the Gulf of Mexico. Models try to develop some warm advection
precipitation during the afternoon. I think most of it will be
north/west of the forecast area, but enough placement
uncertainty exists to retain small chances on the N/W fringes of
the region.
Once the warm front surges northward, rain chances drop off for
the rest of the work week. Not completely zero but most areas
will stay dry. This comes with another unseasonably mild period,
with highs near or above 70 in the urban areas both Thursday
and Friday.
The next front nudges in by Saturday as strong high pressure
builds over Canada. This -- potentially unfortunately -- means
next Saturday looks a bit wet at the present time, with
temperatures returning back toward seasonal normals.

.AVIATION /07Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
A cold front will pass through the terminals today. Southeast
winds will shift to the northwest behind the boundary. with
gusts around 15 to 20 knots. The boundary will move through KMRB
by 9z...KCHO between 12 and 15z...and across the rest of the
terminals late this morning through the middle afternoon hours.
Periods of rain are expected and cigs will lower to MVFR and IFR
levels. Vsbys will also be reduced to MVFR and IFR levels in
periods of rain.
A period of heavier rain is likely late this afternoon through
this evening as low pressure rapidly intensifies along the
boundary to our east. Strong northwest winds will develop as
well and continue into Monday morning. The low will pass by to
our east this evening before moving into New England overnight
and Canada Monday. Drier air will work its way back into the
area from southwest to northeast overnight into early Monday.
High pressure will build to the south Monday and VFR conditions
are likely. More VFR conditions are likely Monday night through
Tuesday night.
Some brief vsby/ceiling restrictions possible in showers late
Wednesday or Wednesday night, as a warm front moves through.
Otherwise VFR expected in the extended.

.MARINE...
A cold front will approach the waters this morning before
passing through this afternoon into this evening. Low pressure
will rapidly intensify near the boundary this evening before
moving into New England overnight. Southerly winds ahead of the
boundary will gusts up to 20 knots...but it will be marginal. A
wind shift to the northwest is expected behind the boundary.
Winds will strengthen tonight with gusts around 35 to 45 knots
most likely. A Gale Warning is in effect for the waters tonight.
The Gale Warning continues through Monday morning. Although it
may be able to be cancelled earlier Monday morning as the
gradient subsides. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed
for the waters later Monday into Monday evening.
A weak reinforcing cold front will pass through the waters
later Monday night into Tuesday. High pressure will return for
later Tuesday and Tuesday night.
Southerly winds dominate Wednesday through Friday but right now the
gradient does not look significant enough to cause marine concerns.
A few gusts near Small Craft Advisory levels cannot be ruled out as
a system approaches Friday night/Saturday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The tidal anomaly is pretty persistent around 0.7 foot across our
waters, approaching one foot on the lower tidal Potomac. The next
high tide is the lesser of the two but the tidal anomaly is expected
to increase on the southerly flow. The new forecast just issued
keeps all the forecast locations below minor flood level with tidal
departures approaching 1.25 feet. But a little overachieving could
bring sensitive spots to minor so it will need to be monitored today.
Tidal departures begin to decrease by this evening as winds shift,
but could still be high enough to threaten minor flood levels with
the evening high tide at sensitive spots since it is the preferred
tide cycle. After that, water levels drop precipitously and return
to or even below astronomical normals.
