southward, and the ultimate position of this front will help
determine the weather for Sunday. In the mean time, the low will
track to eastern Ohio by daybreak Sunday. Have generally slowed
down the timing of POPs, with any substantial precipitation
(though still light) generally expected after daybreak as the
low and shortwave energy aloft arrive.
Temperatures will remain mild compared to last night, with most
places staying in the 40s despite the front sliding down. With
only mid and high clouds still in place at this time, some areas
have been able to cool more quickly in the eastern half of the
area. Have adjusted lows down by a few degrees, although
temperatures should generally hold within a few degrees of
current readings as cloud cover increases.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A second low pressure, currently located near Kansas City, will
ride east along the stalled front on Sunday, crossing our area
in the afternoon. Ahead of the low and south of the stalled
front, southerly winds will increase and warmer air will advect
north into the region. Right now the boundary appears to
struggle to get north of DC, so certainly much of Maryland will
be relatively cool (though still above normal). Meanwhile, it
may feel quite toasty in central Virginia where 70s look likely.
Showers and drizzle will be common north of the stalled front as
the low approaches and then moves on by. During the afternoon,
as the low passes across northern areas, the cold front will
cross Virginia, with some potential for strong gusty winds,
particularly over the high terrain. With very strong winds also
present aloft, decided to start High Wind Watch around the time
of frontal passage in these areas. Since it appears the wind
field will be fairly uniform over the higher terrain, have
extended the Watch for the remainder of the Allegheny Front.
Further north, winds will stay comparatively light through
Sunday with the boundary near the area.
The low will develop explosively Sunday night and Monday near
NeW England with very strong winds developing around the back
side. Guidance is insistent on 850 winds near 60 knots later
Sunday night and early Monday with 925 winds of at least 45
knots sustained. With decent mixing due to cold advection behind
the low, it would seem a ripe setup for gusts near 50 knots
across the metro, so have issued a high wind watch starting
after midnight. Decided to separate the metro from the higher
terrain areas since winds at 850 and 925 will be strongest over
the metro, while greater elevation in western Virginia and
eastern West Virginia would also promote higher winds, with a
gap of "only" advisory level gusts likely in between. There
remains some uncertainty as far as just how much mixing will
occur over the metro, though BUFKIT soundings are quite
impressive with some suggesting winds could gust closer to 60
knots. This seems excessive but certainly suggests 50 knots is
possible. Highest winds a little uncertain but probably during
the morning Monday, possibly before dawn but a bit more likely
just after as the sun increases low level mixing a bit. Winds
should then gradually diminish through the rest of Monday and
Monday night as the low slides east away from the region.
One other minor concern is some upslope snow showers Sunday
night and early Monday along the Allegheny Front. It does
appear there is potential for 3 inches Sunday night, especially
the most favored areas in Grant/Pendleton, so have added a
mention to the HWO.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure will briefly move over the area Tuesday. Two
areas of low pressure will cross the eastern U.S. Wednesday into
Thursday, one across New England and the other across the
southeast. Right now most guidance maintains these as two
separate systems with little or no phasing, but several recent
GEFS members and the 00z ECMWF show enough interaction between
the two to bring more clouds and precipitation closer to the
area during the middle of the week.
A reinforcing shot of cold air will accompany high pressure at
the surface as it builds into the area late in the week. A
warming trend likely commences next weekend.

.AVIATION /02Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
VFR continues this evening. Late tonight (generally after 09Z),
low clouds and perhaps a little drizzle could develop as a
front backs down from the north and winds become easterly. In
addition, low level moisture will be lifting NE from Kentucky,
so can't rule out MVFR conditions at any terminal by the time
daybreak arrives. Potential for IFR is there but given dry
atmosphere and uncertainty, when low MVFR in TAFs to start. Have
potential lower conditions as "SCT." As the front tries to go
back north on Sunday but struggles to make progress, MVFR or IFR
conditions may persist much of the day. Did go ahead and add a
period of IFR conditions at BWI/MTN, where there is better
consensus of the front struggling to lift north. Showers are
also expected (lower chance at CHO), especially through early
afternoon.
Conditions improve to VFR late Sunday as low pressure passes,
but strong gusts to 50 knots are possible Sunday night and
Monday as the storm explosively develops near New England. These
winds will start diminishing by late Monday.

.MARINE...
Winds are light and variable this evening and should remain that
way thru tonight into early Sunday (perhaps becoming easterly).
Low level southerly winds expected to increase ahead of an
approaching cold front and south of a stationary front on
Sunday, so have SCA starting back up during mid morning and
continuing thru the day for our southern waters. Northern waters
likely to stay north of the stalled front with lighter winds.
Headline may need to be changed depending on frontal position,
which is still a little uncertain.
Strong cold front and rapidly developing storm system will then
bring gales at a minimum to all waters starting Sunday night and
continuing through Monday. Potential for Storm Warning level
winds is there, but confidence not quite as high yet, so for now
have went with Gale with option to upgrade to Storm. Winds
likely to approach 50 knots at least late Sunday night and
Monday, for sure, just question of if they quite reach Storm
criteria. Winds will diminish late Monday and Monday night as
the storm heads away.
Generally light southerly flow is expected Tuesday across the
waters as a broad frontal zones approaches. Winds become
northwest and could gust close to Small Craft Advisory levels
Wednesday after the front passes.
