Northeast winds have dropped below advisory levels in most areas
with just some isolated gusts to around 40 mph in the foothills
and mountains. Advisory level winds may return later tonight and
Saturday and increase again early Sunday.

.SYNOPSIS...

Moderate to strong Santa Ana winds will continue to bring very
dry conditions with extreme fire danger to much of Southwest
California through Friday. The dry air mass will result in another
night of frost and freeze conditions in wind sheltered locations.
The offshore flow and a building ridge of high pressure over the
region will support a warming trend into this weekend.

.SHORT TERM...(TDY-SAT)

A strong offshore flow pattern continues across the region this
morning as strong high pressure remains over the Great Basin.
Another burst of Santa Ana winds is occurring this morning as the
surface pressure gradient tighten to around -7 mb. Models weaken
the offshore flow pattern tonight, marginally near warning levels
in the mountains. At least, advisory level winds will continue
into Friday. The main focus will be on the Santa Ana weather
pattern.

A secondary focus will be the cold overnight temperatures for the
wind-sheltered areas as radiative cooling effects will be more
efficient with clear skies and a dry air mass in place.

*** FROM PREVIOUS DISCUSSION ***

Gradients relax tonight by about 2 mb and upper support diminishes
also. Unless there is a big change in the forecast expect that all
current warnings will be changed to advisories for tonight and
Friday. Temps Friday will be very similar today.

Offshore flow continues to weaken into Saturday but there will
probably be advisory level gusts in the morning across the
VTA/L.A. valleys and mountains. With no cool air advection at all
max temps will climb another few degrees as well.

.LONG TERM...(SUN-WED)

Both the GFS and the EC show a large ridge over the area for the
Sunday and then a sloppy looking rex blocking pattern for early to
mid week. Offshore flow persists through the period. There may be
some partly cloudy days depending if some mid or high clouds sneak
in through the area.

It looks like Sunday will be the warmest day as 582 hgts combine
with offshore flow to bring max temps 8 to 16 degrees above
normal.

There will be some cooling Monday through Wednesday but not much
and max temps will continue well above normal.

The dry airmass will allow for rapid overnight cooling and its
likely that there will be below normal lows in all of the wind
sheltered locations.

.AVIATION...07/1745Z...

At 1711Z, there was a weak surface-based inversion at KLAX. The top
of the inversion was at 900 ft with a temperature of 20 deg C.

Generally hi confidence in the 18Z TAFs. VFR conditions are expected
at nearly all the airfields thru Fri morning. The exception is at
KSBA where smoke from the Thomas Fire will continue to bring IFR and
MVFR vsbys to the airfield, and there is also the 30-40 percent
chance of MVFR cigs with a smoke layer tonight. Gusty N winds will
affect KVNY and KBUR thru early this evening, with gusty NE winds at
KOXR and KCMA. For KWJF and KPMD, gusty NE winds are expected for a
time this afternoon. In addition, low level wind shear (LLWS) will be
possible at times thru early this evening for KSMO, KLAX and KLGB
due to gusty NE winds just above ground level.

KLAX...Hi confidence in the 18Z TAF with VFR conditions expected
thru Fri afternoon. LLWS will also be possible at times 21Z-03Z due
to gusty NE winds just above ground level.

KBUR...Hi confidence in the 18Z TAF with VFR conditions expected
thru Fri morning. Gusty N winds will affect the airfield through
this afternoon as well.

.MARINE...07/830 AM.

South of Point Conception, good confidence that SCA level wind
gusts will increase this morning with gale force gusts to 35
knots likely from Point Mugu to Santa Monica and across the San
Pedro Channel into this afternoon. East facing harbors will be
extremely hazardous due to the strong gusty winds and choppy seas,

Strong SCA gusts are expected over PZZ676 through this afternoon,
with a 20% chance of gale force gusts.

North of Point Conception...no SCA conditions expected through
early next week.

.FIRE WEATHER...07/900 AM.

The Red Flag Warning for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties is in
effect through Saturday 8 PM. A Red Flag Warning for the Santa
Barbara County Mountains is in effect through 9 AM Friday.

An extended moderate to strong Santa Ana wind event
will continue over much of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties through
at Sunday. The winds today are slow to increase but will peak this
afternoon with gusts of 45 to 70 mph. The winds will then gradually
weaken Friday through Saturday. Meanwhile, minimum humidities of 5
to 10 percent will be common through at least early next week, with
widespread very poor overnight recoveries staying under 30 percent.
As a result, critical Red Flag conditions will persist over most of
Los Angeles and Ventura through Saturday, and possibly through Sunday
as the winds might increase some from Sunday. East winds will also
affect the Santa Barbara Mountains and foothills which will result
in critical conditions. All other areas will remain in elevated fire
weather conditions with locally breezy offshore flow and prolonged
dry conditions.

There is a chance that offshore flow and near-critical conditions
will continue through the middle of next week. No rain possibilities
over the next 10 days.

If fire ignition occurs, very rapid spread and extreme fire
behavior is likely. Everyone needs to exercise extreme caution
when handling any potential fire ignition sources...such as
campfires, cigarettes, welding and brush clearing equipment.
