A stronger Santa Ana wind event could develop Monday night and Tuesday as another surge of air from the Great Basin combines with a tight pressure gradient over southwest California. Strong high pressure in combination with the winds will produce record setting high temperatures across southwest California. The hottest days are expected to be Monday and Tuesday when highs approach or exceed 100 degrees even within a mile of the ocean. People living in coastal areas without air conditioning should take precautions to avoid heat illness and heat stress. .SYNOPSIS...
Gusty northerly winds focused across the mountains of Southwest
California will turn northeast and become more widespread by
Sunday. Moderate Santa Ana winds Sunday and Monday may become
strong by Tuesday. The offshore flow is expected to bring record
heat to some areas Monday and Tuesday. Weakening offshore flow
will provide a cooling trend for the middle of next week.

.SHORT TERM...(TDY-TUE)
Forecast gets more complicated from here on through the next few
days as a Santa Ana wind event becomes a factor for heat,
humidity, and fire weather potential. Temperatures today have
rebounded from a cool start and well into the 70s and 80s this
afternoon, near or slightly above normal for this time of the
year. Locally gusty winds have lingered across sections of the
central coast as well as the typical eastern Ventura and western
LA County Santa Ana corridors with winds turning from northerly to
more traditional northeasterly. Model guidance continues to show
low-end wind advisory level winds across the central coast and the
Santa Ana corridors tonight and Sunday. In fact, it looks like
winds along the central coast could extend into late Sunday night.
The heat starts to build on Sunday across southwest California as
high pressure strengthens and the offshore Santa Ana wind flow
persists. The LAX-DAG pressure gradient tightens from a current -3
mb to -5mb by tomorrow morning. This helps compressional heating
for the valleys and coasts with additional heating that will push
temperatures well into the 80s to mid 90s in the warmest areas.
Sunday night into Monday looks more interesting as Santa Ana winds
look a bit stronger with a pressure gradient another 1 mb more
offshore. More widespread wind advisories are likely for Ventura
and Los Angeles Counties during this period and winds look like
they will remain gusty all day on Monday. MOS winds indicate
Camarillo having east winds sustained at 28 mph! Some of the
hottest temperatures will push the century mark on Monday with
coastal areas within a mile of the beach potentially being the
hottest overall. This will likely be a BIG impact on people living
near the ocean due to lack of air conditioning where it's normally
not needed. It now looks like Monday could be just as hot or even
hotter than Tuesday especially for coastal locations.
As for Monday night and Tuesday, another surge of air from the
Great Basin and topped by a 1040mb surface high over Idaho will
likely bring the strongest winds of the Santa Ana event into the
region. Gradients are showing -8 mb which would easily be high
wind criteria so there is potential for gusts over 60 mph in the
Ventura and Los Angeles County mountains, including the Santa
Monica's. Overnight low temperatures could stay well into the 70s
and even lower 80s for foothills if winds kick in Monday night,
then lead to another scorching afternoon of heat across valleys
and coasts on Tuesday. Will upgrade heat watches to warnings for
these locals in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, leaving a watch
for the south Santa Barbara Coast on Monday and Tuesday.
.LONG TERM...(WED-SAT)
The high pressure ridge looks slower to break down and
temperatures will likely stay very warm Tuesday night and
Wednesday. Highs will drop 5-8 degrees from Tuesday, but we could
still need heat advisories for the unusually hot temperatures over
the region. Winds will be much lighter by Wednesday afternoon and
may start to switch back to onshore late in the day.
High pressure is shoved to the west by Thursday as a large upper
trough drops into the middle of the country. Heights fall and
upper winds turn more northerly for a cooler flow across the
region. Temperatures will continue to moderate, but remain well
above normal in most areas. For the end of the week, a high
pressure ridge will start building back across the west coast
for continued warm and dry weather in store.

of the inversion was at 6300 feet with a temperature of 15 degrees
c.

For the Outer Waters... Winds will diminish today but remain at
Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level through Sunday. On Monday, zones
670 and 673 will drop below SCA levels, but 676 may get some
northeast winds up to SCA speeds.
For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal... Winds will diminish
today but an SCA for hazardous seas continue through this
afternoon. There is a 40 percent chance of SCA level winds out of
the northeast late tonight and Sunday morning.
For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception...From Sunday
night through Tuesday, there is a 70 percent chance of SCA level
northeasterly winds nearshore from Ventura southward.
A large long-period northwest swell will move through the coastal
waters through the weekend. Seas up to 15 feet are likely across
the outer and northern waters. There will be dangerous breaking
waves on the Central Coast through tonight with dangerous
conditions in and near harbors. South of Point Conception, the
westerly swell will contribute to continued hazardous conditions
along the coastline through the weekend.

.BEACHES...21/200 PM.
A large long-period northwest swell will move through the coastal
waters through Sunday morning.
North of Point Conception...A High Surf Advisory continues
through Sunday morning. Surf will continue between 11 and 16 feet
through midday then will begin to diminish this afternoon but
remain above 10 feet through Sunday morning. Some impacts from
these large and powerful waves and strong currents are the risk of
ocean drowning and sneaker waves that can suddenly overrun
previously dry beaches and jetties. For Monday...the surf will
linger around the minimum criteria for High Surf of 10 feet.
South of Point Conception...A Beach Hazards Statement continues
through Sunday afternoon for surf of 4 to 7 feet with local sets
to 8 feet. Dangerous rip currents are a primary impact of this
elevated surf.

.FIRE WEATHER...21/945 AM...
Northerly flow today and tonight is expected to bring a
warming and drying trend along with elevated fire danger to the region.
The strongest winds during this period will remain focused across the
mountains, especially the Interstate 5 corridor and Santa Ynez mountains
where gusts between 40 and 50 mph can be expected. A Red Flag Warning
is in effect for the mountains and Santa Clarita Valley beginning
today. Brief critical fire weather conditions will also be possible today
across the valleys of Los Angeles and Ventura counties as well as the
Santa Monica Mountains, along with the Santa Barbara south coast
tonight, especially near the foothills above Montecito.
From Sunday through Tuesday, a prolonged duration of gusty Santa Ana winds with
hot and very dry conditions is expected. Northeast winds are expected to gust
between 30 and 45 mph across wind favored passes and canyons of Los Angeles
and Ventura counties on Sunday, then increase to gusts between 40 and 50 mph
Monday into Tuesday. The hottest and driest conditions are also expected on
Monday and Tuesday, when triple digit heat and humidities lowering into single
digits and lower teens will be common across coastal and valley areas. Northeast
winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph will also bring elevated fire weather
concerns to portions of the Central Coast and higher terrain in San Luis
Obispo County, however humidities will not be sufficiently low to warrant
Red Flag Warnings.
Very warm and dry conditions during the overnight hours in the mountains,
foothills, and wind prone areas will add to the fire weather threat during
this long duration of dangerous fire weather conditions. A Red Flag Warning
is now in effect Sunday through Tuesday for much of Los Angeles and Ventura
counties, including coastal areas. If fire ignition occurs, there will be
the potential for very rapid spread of wildfire with long range spotting
and extreme fire behavior that could lead to a threat to life and property.
