.SYNOPSIS...
Onshore flow will bring low clouds to coastal areas today, with
significant cooling in most areas. Monday into Tuesday, the first
significant Santa Ana event of the season will bring widespread
offshore winds with warming and drying west of the mountains. A
trough of low pressure building over the West Coast will likely
bring cooling to the area for the middle and end of the week.

.SHORT TERM...(TDY-TUE)
Low clouds and fog have pushed into coastal sections of L.A. and
VTU Counties, the Central Coast, and the Santa Ynez Valley early
this morning. There was an eddy circulation in place across the
inner waters, and this may help to push clouds into the south
coast of SBA County and possibly into the valleys of L.A. County
by daybreak. Gradients were onshore, nearly 6 mb more onshore
between KLAX and KDAG than at this time on Sat. The WRF suggests
plenty of low level moisture at the beaches south of Pt Conception
this afternoon, so it is possible that some clouds will linger at
the beaches through the day, mainly at the beaches of VTU and L.A.
Counties. Strengthening onshore flow and significant cooling at
950 mb will bring substantial and noticeable cooling to all areas
west of the mountains today. Max temps at many locations west of
the mountains will be 10 to 15 degrees lower today than they were
on Sat, and possibly down close to 20 degrees in some areas. There
will be some cooling in the mtns and deserts, but it will not
nearly as significant as that in coastal and valley areas.
Models are still in good agreement showing a trough dropping
through the Pac NW and into the Great Basin today and
tonight, evolving into a closed low was it move southeastward
to near the Four Corners area Monday. At the surface, strong
high pressure will build southward into Nevada. Pressure gradients
will rapidly reverse between this afternoon and Monday morning,
and are forecast to be 8 mb between KLAX and KDAG by daybreak
Mon. There could be some low clouds across coastal sections of
L.A. County and on the Central Coast early tonight, but those
should be gone by daybreak Monday as offshore flow develops.
Strong offshore gradients, cold air advection, and fairly good
upper level support with strong winds at 850 mb should result in
some decent Santa Ana winds across much of L.A. and VTU Counties
very late tonight and Monday. The position of the 500 mb low looks
to be just a bit far to the east for optimal upper support, so
have decided to keep High Wind Watches in place for now, and not
yet upgrade to warnings. However, if the winds and subsidence at
850 mb verifies, high wind warning level winds should occur in the
mtns of L.A. and VTU Counties and the Santa Clarita Valleys.
Elsewhere, expect strong Wind Advisory level winds across the
valleys of VTU County, most valley locations of L.A. County,
especially the northern and western San Fernando Valley, the
Ventura County coast, and locations below passes and canyons from
Malibu to Hollywood. Wind advisories will almost certainly be
needed for these areas.
Max temps will likely rise several degrees west of the mountains
on Mon, possibly reaching 90 degrees in the warmest locations.
In the mtns and deserts, there will be significant cooling on
Monday as cool air spreading southwestward from the Great Basin.
The broad upper ridge across the region will transition into a
broad upper trough on Tue. Heights will rise slightly or change
little. Gradients will still be offshore in the morning, then
will flip onshore. Expect several degrees of warming on Tue in
the mtns and deserts, with little change or possibly slight
warming in the valleys, and some cooling across the coastal plain,
mainly near the beaches.
.LONG TERM...(WED-SAT)
An upper low will move into the Pac NW Tue night and Wed, with a
trough extending southward. Heights/thicknesses will fall across
the region, and onshore flow will increase. Some low clouds could
return to coastal sections of L.A. County and the Central Coast
Tue night/Wed morning. There should be at least a few degrees of
cooling to most areas Wed, especially west of the mountains. The
upper trough across the West Coast will sharpen and dig some Thu
and Fri, so expect some additional cooling each day, with more
extensive night through morning low clouds and fog, likely
pushing into the valleys. The GFS is deeper with the trough and as
a result shows more cooling across the region. Either way, temps
should be below normal Thu through Fri. Expect minor changes on
Sat as the trough will linger across the Western States, though it
should begin to move eastward.

At 08Z at KLAX...there was A 1000 ft deep marine layer with an
inversion top to 2300 ft at 26 degrees Celsius.
Marine layer stratus is forming in a slow and haphazard way this
morning. Low to moderate confidence through 20Z in coastal and
vly TAFs esp with respect to arrival time and flight cat changes.
Good confidence in VFR conds from 20Z to 05Z and then stratus may
return to the LA coast after 05Z but there is a 40 percent chc
that clouds will not develop.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 30 percent chc that
cigs will not rise to MVFR hgts. There is a 40 percent chc that
low clouds will not develop tonight and skies will be clear.
KBUR...Low confidence in TAF there is a 40 percent chc of clear
skies this morning. If clouds do arrive there is 30 percent chc of
LIFR cigs and vis. Good confidence in VFR conds by 17Z with only a
20 percent chc of a delay until 18Z.

High confidence in moderate to strong Northwest winds through
this evening from the Central Coast to San Nicolas Island.
Moderate confidence in gale force winds over the northern outer
zones, mostly beyond 20 nm from shore. These winds will generate a
short-period swell through much of the waters today.
Over the Santa Barbara Channel and the Santa Monica Basin, winds
are expected to remain below Small Craft Advisory (SCA) through
this evening. A strong offshore wind event is forecast for
Monday...with NW winds of 20 to 30 knots likely from Ventura to
Santa Monica...and out to the Channel Islands. There is a 20
percent chance of 10 to 20 knot winds reaching Avalon harbor.
A long period south swell will slow decay through Monday...which
will create hazardous breaking waves near the coast...especially
for small boats.

.FIRE WEATHER...
07/1000 AM
Offshore winds are weakening today, however very warm and dry
conditions will continue to bring widespread elevated fire
weather danger across the area through the day.
A stronger offshore wind event is expected for late Sunday night
into Monday when offshore pressure gradients are expected to
strengthen and there is some fairly strong wind support up to the
850 mb level. There is still some differences in strength with
this event, with the 18z NAM advertising a LAX-Daggett gradient
around -8 mb and the 12z GFS showing a gradient peaking just over -5
mb. Either way, it appears there will be sufficiently strong
offshore winds coupled with low humidities to bring a high
potential for critical fire weather conditions. Some Fire Weather
Watches have been converted to Red Flag Warnings already due to
the high confidence. These would be in effect from early Monday
morning through mid morning Tuesday. The areas would include the
Los Angeles and Ventura County Mountains including the Santa
Monica Range. Also, the Ventura County Valleys, San Fernando and
Santa Clarita Valleys. Otherwise, Fire Weather Watches will remain
in effect for now for the Los Angeles and Ventura coastal areas
as well as the San Gabriel Valley. To the north, the Fire Weather
Watch includes The Interior areas of San Luis Obispo County
including the San Luis Obispo Mountains, as well as the Cuyama
Valley.
Peak offshore winds are expected on Monday, especially across
western Los Angeles and eastern Ventura counties, where gusts
between 50 and 60 mph will be possible across the mountains and
wind prone passes and canyons of the Santa Clarita Valley. Gusts
between 40 and 50 mph will be possible across the coastal and
valley areas. This surge of offshore winds will bring considerable
drying to the region, first across the mountains late Sunday
night then descending into coastal and valley areas during the day
Monday. Widespread humidities into the single digits and teens
will be likely during this period. During this period of potential
critical fire weather conditions, there will be an increased risk
of fire ignitions and large fire growth, including rapid fire
spread and long range spotting potential due to the gusty offshore
winds and very dry fuels. Offshore winds are expected to diminish
rapidly Tuesday morning, with a transition to onshore winds by
the afternoon with continued very low humidities.
