.An upper level high pressure system will strengthen over
Northern California and Nevada today. This in combination with a
weak northerly wind component at the lower levels is expected to
bring a significant warming trend across interior sections of
Southwest California today. Widespread triple digit heat is
expected across the lower mountains, Antelope Valley, and
interior valleys. By Tuesday, an increase in monsoonal moisture
will potentially lower temperatures a few degrees across Los
Angeles and Ventura counties, however there will be increased
humidity which will lead to significant discomfort.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
A surge of monsoonal moisture will bring a chance of thundershowers
to much of the region through at least Wednesday night, then in the
mountains, the interior valleys and the Antelope Valley Thursday
through Friday. Drier weather is expected for the weekend.
Temperatures will be mostly above normal through the period.

.SHORT TERM...(TODAY-THU)

Gusty winds across the SBA south coast and the Santa Ynez mountains
have diminished, so the Wind Advisory was allowed to expire. Areas
of low clouds and fog were confined to the Central Coast early this
morning, as a surge of monsoonal moisture has pushed into the
region, with plenty of mid and high level clouds across L.A. and VTU
Counties. A large area of showers and thunderstorms was moving
westward across San Bernardino and Riverside Counties early this
morning. While the storms seem to have been weakening with time,
scattered showers and thunderstorms will probably affect the
mountains of L.A.
County and the Antelope Valley by daybreak if they hold together.
While these storms were moving fairly quickly, they could produce
some heavy downpours across the San Gabriel Mountains and eastern
Antelope Valley.

Overall, a large monsoonal surge will affect the forecast area for
the next few days. Getting all of the details of this forecast
correct will be next to impossible. Max temps will be highly
dependent upon daytime cloud cover, and shower/thunderstorm activity
will be dependent upon both cloud cover and the timing of various
vort rippling through the east to southeast flow across the region
over the next few days. For today, there will be plenty of clouds to
start, but satellite imagery indicates an area of clear skies behind
this first batch of clouds and showers. Max temps should be down a
few degrees in most areas, but unless cloud cover is greater than
anticipated, it will still be rather hot across the valleys, lower
mountain elevations and the Antelope Valley. Have kept Heat
Advisories in place for the mountains, the interior valleys of SLO
County and the Santa Clarita Valley, despite lower temperatures,
since increasing humidity will add to the discomfort. But it is
marginal, and dependent on receiving at least a few hours of
sunshine later this morning into this afternoon.

The main story will be threat of monsoonal showers and thunderstorms
across Southwest California during next few days, and not just
confined to the mountains and the Antelope Valley. For today, expect
a chance of showers/thunderstorms in the mtns of L.A. and VTU
Counties and the Antelope Valley. With favorable easterly flow
aloft, there is a least a slight chance that showers and storms will
drift into coastal and valley areas. The threat of showers/tstms
will spread into SBA County in the afternoon.

Then, there will be a threat of showers and thunderstorms across the
entire forecast area tonight through at least Wed night. On Thu,
there will be a continued chance of showers/storms in the mountains
and Antelope Valley. The flow will turn more southeasterly, so do
not expect as much activity west of the mountains, with the
exception of the foothills in the L.A. County Valleys.

The models continue to show very high precipitable water values
overspreading the region today, reaching 1.70 to 2.00 inches across
a good portion of the region by late today. The WRF actually shows
PW values rising to an amazing 2.25 inches across portions of the
region on Wed. All models show decent instability in the mountains
and deserts through Thu, not surprisingly best during the afternoon
and evening hours. With so much moisture, there is the potential for
flash flooding with any thunderstorms that develop, especially in
higher elevations such as he mountains and Antelope Valley. The
steering flow today may be a bit fast, and should keep any storms
moving along. However, there is a potential for storms training over
any one area. The flow is forecast to be weaker on Wed, yielding a
more significant flash flood threat. Have issued Flash Flood Watches
for the mountains of L.A. and VTU Counties and the Antelope Valley
for this morning through Wed evening. These watches may have to
ultimately be expanded into the valleys of at least L.A. County, and
into interior SLO and SBA Counties as well. Other potential risks
with thunderstorms include gusty and erratic winds, as well as
dangerous lightning, even at the beaches. Due to very dry fuels,
lightning could trigger new fire activity in areas outside of the
wetting rain core.

.LONG TERM...(FRI-MON)

The upper flow shifts to the southwest Friday as a weak trough
develops to the north. This will dry things out, although there will
still be a slight chance of showers and storms in the mountains of
L.A. and VTU Counties and the Antelope Valley in the afternoon and
evening. Dry weather is expected over the weekend. Heights and
thicknesses will remain high, so max temps should be at least a bit
above normal in most areas through the period, except close to
normal in coastal and valley areas. Night through morning low clouds
will likely begin to return to coastal areas over the weekend.

At 0445Z at KLAX, the marine layer was around 1300 ft deep. The
top of the marine inversion was around 4000 ft with a
temperature of 32 degrees Celsius.

Low clouds and fog will become widespread on the Central
Coast overnight with mostly LIFR to VLIFR conds expected. Low
clouds should clear fairly early on Tue, generally by mid
morning. Otherwise, surge of monsoonal moisture and mid level
clouds should disrupt low clouds, so expect patchy IFR cigs
at worst in coastal areas of L.A. and VTU Counties.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms across the
LA/Ventura county mountains and Antelope Valley on Tuesday with a 20
percent chance affecting coastal/valley TAF sites.

Gusty sundowner winds will continue across the San Ynez Range and
adjacent south coast of SBA County through early Tue
morning. This will bring some LLWS and mdt to stg UDDFS in the
vicinity of KSBA.

KLAX...Moderate confidence in the 06Z TAF. There is a 20-30% chance
of IFR cigs between 07z and 13z tonight. There is a 20 percent
chance of showers and thunderstorms Tue afternoon and evening.

KBUR...Moderate confidence in the 06Z TAF. There is a 20 percent
chance of showers and thunderstorms.

widespread SCA conds are not expected through Friday, although there
will be local SCA level wind gusts across the southern two thirds of
the outer waters this afternoon and evening.

A long-period southerly swell will continue across the coastal
waters through Thursday and possibly into Friday.

There is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms across the far
southern portion of the coastal waters spreading northward across
PZZ655 later today...and into PZZ650 this evening. The thunderstorm
chances may spread to the Central Coast waters Wednesday afternoon
and evening.
