...DANGEROUS HEAT ACROSS MUCH OF SOUTHWEST CALIFORNIA THROUGH
SATURDAY...

...GUSTY WINDS OVER SANTA BARBARA COUNTY TONIGHT...

.A strong upper level high pressure system over the southwest
United States along with breezy northerly winds at the surface
will create dangerous record-breaking heat over much of the area
through Saturday. High temperatures between 100 and 110 degrees
will be common away from the coast with temperatures into the 90s
over some coastal sections. Relief at night will be limited, with
evening temperatures remaining very warm, and overnight minimum 
temperatures staying above 80 degrees in some valleys and hills.
These are dangerous and life-threatening conditions, especially
for the sensitive population (elderly, children, outdoor workers)
and those without access to air conditioning. The heat will also
bring fire weather concerns. Sunday should bring 5 to 10 degrees 
of cooling in general, but this means it will remain hot in some 
locations.

The north winds will be strongest over southern Santa Barbara
County, where gusty Sundowner north winds are expected late this 
afternoon and tonight.

SATURDAY...

.A strong upper level high pressure system over the southwest
United States along with locally breezy northerly winds at the
surface will create dangerous record-breaking heat over much of
the area again today. High temperatures between 100 and 110 
degrees will be common away from the coast with temperatures into 
the 90s over some inland coastal sections. These temperatures when
combined with the very warm overnight low are dangerous and 
potentially life-threatening, especially for the elderly, 
children, outdoor workers and those without access to air 
conditioning.

.SYNOPSIS...
A ridge of high pressure over Utah will support triple digit heat
for inland areas today and Saturday. Some cooling is expected by
early next week as high pressure weakens. This pattern may also
support isolated thunderstorms at times, focused across the
mountains.

.SHORT TERM...(TDY-SUN)

Skies were clear across the entire region this morning. There were
a few patches of mid level clouds just to the south and east of
the region which may push into the forecast area this morning.
Otherwise, skies will be sunny this morning. There may be some
clouds across Los Angeles County this afternoon, but skies will
become partly cloudy at worst, and mainly in the foothills,
mountains and deserts. Some mid level moisture slipping into far
eastern sections of L.A. County may be sufficient to produce some
buildups in the mountains this afternoon, and there is the
slightest chance of a shower or thunderstorm across the eastern
San Gabriel Mountains.

The main story over the next couple of days will surely be the
heat. A very strong 596-599 dm high centered in southern Utah and
northern Arizona will move little through Sat. Warming through the
atmosphere began on Thu, and will continue today. Profiler data
indicated 4-6 degrees C of warming above 500 feet from this time
on Thursday. In many foothill locations, early morning temps were
still in the upper 70s to mid 80s, and it was still 90 degrees at
Montecito Hills in southern Santa Barbara County. Dangerous heat
conditions are expected across all of interior Southwestern
California today through Saturday, and Excessive Heat Warnings are
in effect for all valley, mountain and desert areas. The
exception is across the Santa Ynez Valley, where a Heat Advisory
is in effect since the nights are quite cool there.

Decent offshore n-s gradients should bring gusty NW to N winds to
the Santa Ynez Range and the adjacent south coast of SBA County
late this afternoon through tonight, and a wind advisory has been
issued for those areas. Another round of gusty winds is expected
Sat afternoon and evening. The northerly winds will bring very
high temps to the south coast of SBA County, and will keep temps
in the 80s through the night in the foothills, so an Excessive
Heat Warning is in effect for the SBA County south coast. Across
the L.A. County coast, a Heat Advisory is in effect for today, and
this will likely have to be extended through Saturday.

Max temps today will likely rise to between 100 and 110 degrees
in the valleys, Antelope Valley, and lower elevations in the
mountains, and a few of the hottest locations could have highs
up to 112 degrees. Highs will be in the mid 90s to 105 across the
south coast of SBA County away from the beaches, and the mid 90s
to around 100 across interior sections of L.A. County. Max temps
should be similar in most areas on Saturday, although they may be
a few degrees cooler near the immediate coast. It is possible that
even at the beaches, max temps on Sat will be just as high as
those reached today, but they will occur earlier in the day, with
better cooling during the afternoon. There will again be a slight
chance of tstms across the far eastern mountains of L.A. County on
Sat, and across the eastern Antelope Valley as well.

The upper high will weaken a bit Sat night and Sunday. A weak
upper level disturbance will drift northward off Baja CA with a
weak inverted trough approaching the region. Mid level moisture
will increase across the region on Sunday, so there should be more
in the way of mid level cloudiness. An eddy circulation will
develop across the inner waters late Sat night and Sun morning.
There is a slight chance that low clouds could return to portions
of the Central Coast or Los Angeles County coastal areas late Sat
night or Sunday morning, but confidence on that is low. Onshore
flow will increase quite a bit on Sunday. All of these factors
point toward significant cooling in most areas on Sunday, with max
temps likely down 8 to 14 degrees in many locations from those on
Sat. With more in the way of mid level moisture, there will be a
better chance of showers and tstms Sunday afternoon, across the
mtns of L.A., VTU and SBA Counties and the Antelope Valley,
possibly drifting into the San Gabriel Valley as well.

.LONG TERM...(MON-THU)

The latest model solutions indicate ridging aloft weakening early
next week and retreating to at least the Four Corners Region, and
possibly farther east into the Midwest portion of the Country. GFS
solutions suggest onshore flow strengthening as southwest flow
aloft increases ahead of a trough of low pressure progged to move
through the Pacific Northwest. A cooling trend could continue
through much of next week as the ridge retreats.

through 13Z. Coastal TAF sites have a 20 percent chance of MVFR

Small craft conditions expected to continue through late Saturday
night for the outer waters. There is a 40 percent chance of Gale
Force winds this evening and tonight and a 20 percent chance late
Saturday. There is a 30 percent chance of small craft conditions
reaching into western portions of the East Santa Barbara Channel
and the northern inner waters this evening into tonight and again
Saturday evening and night.

A moderate eddy may bring 10 to 20 knot southeasterly winds and
choppy seas to the southern inner waters Sunday, impacting the
San Pedro Channel. A building long period south swell may lead to
dangerous boating conditions nearshore by Sunday.

.FIRE WEATHER...06/230 PM.

Northerly winds will be increasing across the Santa Barbara
County mountains and south coast this evening and peaking Friday
evening with gusts to between 40 and 50 mph possible. Humidities
between 10 and 20 percent are expected during the windiest periods
leading to several hours of critical fire weather conditions. In
addition, temperatures are expected to warm up into the 90s with
isolated locations around 100 possible, especially in the
foothills. A red flag warning is in effect for these areas
through Saturday morning. There's a chance that it may need to be
extended into Sunday morning as computer models indicate similar
if not slightly stronger winds Saturday evening.
