.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will bring possible precipitation and thunderstorms
from Saturday into Monday with below normal temperatures. Gusty
winds can be expected on Saturday, with small hall possible with
any thunderstorms. High pressure will build in by midweek and
develop the overnight marine layer into Friday, with fair skies
and warmer temperatures for inland areas.

.SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT-MON)
The marine inversion early this evening ranged from near 1600 ft
deep at VBG to near 2000 ft deep at LAX. Low clouds lingered along
some coastal areas thru early this evening, including parts of the
Central Coast, and from the eastern portions of the s SBA County
coast thru much of the L.A. County coast. The low clouds s of point
conception are expected to expand quickly inland this evening then
push up to the coastal slopes as the marine inversion deepens to
near 4000 ft by sunrise in response to an approaching upper level
trof. Areas of drizzle will likely develop across this region
overnight as well. For the Central Coast, the low clouds will be
slower to expand but are forecast to affect much of the coast and
adjacent vlys overnight, including the northern interior vlys of SLO
County. Gusty nw winds should persist overnight along the Central
Coast and over portions of the Santa Ynez Mtns and SBA County s
coast w of Goleta. Gusty w to sw winds are expected overnight for
the L.A./VTU County mtns and Antelope Vly.
An upper level trof over the e Pac will approach the CA coast
tonight. An upper level low will form just off the central CA coast
Sat morning then quickly move s to just w of Point Conception Sat
afternoon. The upper low will track e and thru L.A. County later Sat
night then drift slowly se over sern CA on Sun, into extreme s
central CA Sun night, and into nwrn Mexico on Mon.
The deep moist layer with low level southerly flow into VTU/L.A.
Counties on Sat will help to bring drizzle in the morning and a
chance of showers to the area up to the coastal slopes in the
afternoon. The upper low will also bring a slight chance of showers
to SLO/SBA Counties, and a chance of showers with a slight chance of
thunderstorms in the afternoon for higher mtns and Antelope Vly
thanks to cold air aloft (-20 to -23 deg C at 500 mb) and an
increasingly unstable airmass. As the cold upper low moves over the
forecast area Sat night, it will result in a chance of showers,
mountain snow showers, and a slight chance of thunderstorms across
the region. Showers and mountain snow showers will persist for many
areas on Sun into Sun evening with a continued slight chance of
thunderstorms for eastern SBA Country thru L.A. County. The upper
low will slowly move se and away from the area Sun night thru Mon,
with a gradually diminishing chance of showers expected during the
period. Any thunderstorms that occur over the weekend could produce
small hail, gusty winds and brief heavy rain or mtn snow.
Gusty nw winds will prevail on Sat into Sat evening over much of
SLO/SBA Counties, with gusty w winds along the coast s of Point
Conception, and gusty sw winds in the L.A. County mtns to Antelope
Vly. Winds could approach or reach advisory levels at times along
the Central Coast and possibly some coastal areas s of Point
Conception.
This will be a showery weather system with variable rainfall amounts
expected. However, preliminary estimates for rainfall for Sat thru
Mon are for generally 0.25 to 0.50 inch for the coast and vlys of
VTU/L.A. Counties, with 0.50 to 1.00 inch in the mtns. Much of
SLO/SBA Counties are expected to have 0.15 inch or less, except the
mtns and foothills could receive 0.30 inch to 0.60 inch with local
amounts up to 0.75 inch in the higher mtns. Snow levels are expected
to lower to 4500 to 5500 ft, with several inches of snowfall
possible above 5000 to 5500 ft.
Temps across the region are forecast to be several degrees below
normal Sat and Sun, then warm some for Mon back to near normal for
many areas.

.LONG TERM...(TUE-FRI)
Low pressure slowly moves east across Arizona by Tuesday with
clearing skies and northerly winds aloft over our region, but
low-level winds remain onshore. A weak high pressure ridge builds
over southwest California on Wednesday and Thursday with a slight
warming and drying trend for most areas. Onshore winds during this
period will continue to bring low clouds and fog to coastal areas
in a more typical May Gray scenario. By day6 (Thu) another low
pressure trough moves to the Oregon coast with stronger southwest
flow aloft and a deeper marine layer. Coastal temperatures are
going to struggle to push much past 70 degrees in this pattern and
low clouds may persist well into the afternoon hours Wednesday
through Friday.

At 2311Z, the inversion at KLAX was 1700 ft deep. The top of the
inversion was at 4100 ft with a temperature of 20 deg C.
Generally hi confidence in the 00Z TAFs. Low clouds and IFR/MVFR
cigs will affect the coastal and vly airfields starting at TAF
issuance time at several coastal airfields to between 04z and 06Z
elsewhere. MVFR cigs are also expected at KPMD and KWJF between
about 12Z and 18Z. The low clouds are expected to lift to VFR at
KPRB, KSBP and KSMX by 18Z Sat, while the rest of the coast and
adjacent vly airfields should have MVFR cigs thru Sat afternoon.
Gusty w to sw winds will prevail each afternoon and evening at KPMD
and KWJF, with gusty nw winds at KSBP and KSMX early this evening
and again Sat afternoon, along with a few other coastal airfields
including KLAX for Sat afternoon. There is also a slight chance of
thunderstorms at KWJF and KPMD Sat afternoon.
KLAX...Generally hi confidence in the 00Z TAF. Low clouds and MVFR
cigs will affect the airfield for most of the forecast period before
lifting to VFR around 03Z Sat evening. Gusty w winds are expected at
the airfield Sat afternoon and early evening.
KBUR...Generally hi confidence in the 00Z TAFs. Low clouds and MVFR
cigs will affect the airfield starting around 04Z this evening then
persist thru Sat afternoon.

.MARINE...05/800 PM.
Gale force winds developed across the Northern and Outer Coastal
Waters and are likely through early Sunday morning. There is a 50
percent chance that seas could be between 2 and 4 feet larger
than forecast across the Outer Coastal Waters, especially Saturday
and Sunday.
Across the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, winds and seas
are expected to increase and build respectively through Saturday.
Gales will likely develop across the Inner Waters south of Point
Conception between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.
An interval of short-period steep seas is possible across the
entire coastal waters between Saturday night and Sunday. As a
cold trough digs south into the region this weekend, isolated
thunderstorms are possible. Any thunderstorm that forms will be
capable of producing locally gusty winds and rough seas, dangerous
lightning, and heavy rainfall with reduced visibility.
Marine conditions should improve between Monday and Tuesday.
