Late Sunday night into Monday, the flow will shift to the northeast, setting the stage for an extended moderate to strong Santa Ana wind event that will persist through at least Thursday. The Santa Ana winds combined with humidities in the teens and single digits as well as very dry fuels will likely bring an extended period of critical fire weather conditions to much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties Monday through Thursday. During the peak of the event Monday night and Tuesday, there is the potential for damaging wind gusts between 50 and 70 mph across wind prone areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with isolated gusts as high as 80 mph possible in the mountains. This will likely be the strongest and longest duration Santa Ana wind event we have seen so far this season. If fire ignition occurs, there will be the potential for very rapid fire spread, long range spotting, and extreme fire behavior. There will be widespread coastal fog and low clouds on Sunday.
Afternoon temperatures will be near normal this weekend then warm
through the week. Breezy offshore winds on Monday become strong
and gusty on Tuesday. The winds ease on Wednesday but remain at
least breezy through the end of the week.

.SHORT TERM...(TDY-TUE)
Mostly sunny skies with a few hi clouds were noted this morning
across the forecast area, with little change expected thru the
afternoon. Winds will be generally light across the region today,
with onshore flow expected this afternoon. Temps across the region
are forecast to be near normal to slightly above normal. Highs this
afternoon in the warmest valleys and inland coastal areas should
reach the low to mid 70s.
A weak and flat upper ridge will prevail over srn CA today. An upper
level trof is expected to move out of the e Pac and into CA tonight
and Sun. An upper level high is forecast to build just off the PAC
NW and nrn CA coast Sun night and Mon. A fairly sharp upper level
trof will develop S of the upper high over central CA on Mon.
The inversion was surface-based this morning, but should deepen
slightly this afternoon and tonight but remain shallow. The NAM was
indicating an increase in low level moisture tonight into Sun
morning, with some low clouds possible for the Central Coast and
along parts of the coast S of Point Conception. It looks like any
low clouds that move into the coast tonight will be dense in some
areas. Otherwise, partly cloudy skies can be expected over the
forecast area thru Sun then turn mostly clear Sun night and Mon.
However, it looks like a dissipating cold front associated with
the upper trof tonight into Sun will pass thru SLO/SBA Counties
late tonight and early Sun. Behind this system, increasing NW to N
winds can be expected on the N mtn slopes into the sern SLO
County vlys and Cuyama vly, with some upslope clouds possible
there Sun afternoon and Sun night.
Increasing northerly gradients can be expected Sun evening (e.g.,
12Z NAM SBA-BFL gradients -6.7 mb at 06Z Sun evening) will support
strong and gusty advisory-level N to NE canyon winds over the SBA
County mtns and S coast Sun evening. Gusty NW to N advisory-level
winds will also be possible over the L.A./VTU County mtns along the
I-5 corridor early Sun evening, then increase further while
transitioning to N to NE across the mtns and into the vlys and
coastal areas of VTU/L.A. Counties Sun night into Mon morning as
strong surface high pressure builds into the central and nrn Great
Basin. By 12Z Mon, the NAM was forecasting the LAX-DAG gradients to
be -8.1 mb, but the gradient only increases to -5.2 mb by 00Z Tue
(late Mon afternoon). 850 MB winds up to 45-50 kt are forecast over
the mtns, with 950 mb winds up to 50-55 kt in srn VTU County by Mon
morning. There should be good cold air advection with this offshore
flow Sun night and Mon, further helping to drive strong and gusty
winds to lower elevations including coastal areas. Strong advisory-
level to possibly warning-level winds can be expected over the
VTU/L.A. County mtns including the Santa Monica mtns during the
period, with strong advisory-level winds for much of the vlys, and
coastal areas from the Oxnard plain thru Malibu and the Hollywood
Hills. Wind advisories and possible high wind watches will likely be
needed with this event. This will be a cool Santa Any wind event
thanks to the lowering 500 mb heights with the upper level trof and
short hours of daytime heating.
Temperatures across the region will turn cooler on Sun to near
normal for many areas, then cool further for the mtns and deserts
on Mon, but turn slightly milder for the coast and many vlys due to
the offshore flow. Highs in the warmest vlys and inland coastal
areas will be in the upper 60s to around 70 on Sun, and in the upper
60s to low 70s on Mon.

.LONG TERM...(WED-SAT)
The EC and the GFS agree that the Santa Ana will continue through
most if not all of next week. On Tuesday an upper high moves into
the pac NW and bring northeasterly upper level flow to the area.
This upper support along with good cool air advection will all
combine to make Tuesday the windiest day of the week (and the
season so far) Unless something changes there will likely be
plenty of wind warnings and advisories across almost the entire
area. The upper level support and esp the thermal support fades
after Tuesday but the gradients will remain offshore. The winds
will subside some each day with Wednesday likely the last day with
wind advisories.
As with any Santa Ana event the humidities will be very low and
along with the strong winds this event will pose a significant
fire weather risk.
High temperatures will again be cool Tuesday, perhaps just a
couple degrees warmer than Monday, then better warming Wed/Thu as
the cold air starts to shift east and a high pressure ridge
develops along the West Coast. By Thu/Fri coast/valley highs
should be approaching 80 degrees.
Overnight lows will be tricky with the offshore winds, but overall
it will be chilly with sub-freezing temperatures expected,
especially in wind protected locations. The Antelope Valley along
with numerous mountain locations will likely drop to near 20 or
slightly below. Wind protected coastal valleys could drop into
the high 20s to low 30s. So some frost/freeze warnings will be
likely next week.

.AVIATION...02/1800Z.
At 18Z, the marine inversion was based around 500 feet at KLAX.
The top of the inversion was around 1400 feet with a temperature
near 19 degrees Celsius.
At inland terminals, VFR conditions are expected throughout the
period, except for a chance of VLIFR to LIFR conditions between
10Z and 16Z.
At coastal terminals, VFR conditions are expected through at
least 23Z, then VLIFR to LIFR conditions will likely develop at
most coastal terminals through 08Z. Conditions should improve
between 07Z and 13Z. There is a chance of IFR conditions lingering
past 17Z Sunday.
KLAX...VFR conditions are expected through at least 23Z, then
there is a 60 percent chance of VLIFR to LIFR conditions
developing between 23Z and 04Z. There is a 60 percent chance of
conditions improving one category between 07Z and 11Z but could
delay until as late as 13Z. VFR conditions could develop as soon
as 17Z or as late as 22Z Sunday.
KBUR...VFR conditions are expected throughout the period.

Large northwest swell will continue at or just above Small Craft
Advisory levels across the northern two thirds of the outer waters
through Sun night. Winds will also be near or above SCA levels,
especially in western portions.
Across the southern Outer Waters, seas will likely remain at or
above Small Craft Advisory levels through Sunday night. Winds
will probably remain below advisory levels through early Sunday
morning, then may increase through the afternoon and night hours.
In the northern Inner Waters, seas will remain near or above Small
Advisory levels through this evening, then will subside, but
there is a 50 percent chance that winds will reach advisory
levels Sunday afternoon and evening.
In the Santa Barbara Channel and Southern California Bight, winds
and seas will remain below advisory levels thru Sunday night.
Small Advisory level north to northeast winds are likely across
much of the coastal waters Monday thru Tuesday and possibly into
Wednesday or Thursday. Winds could reach gale force late Monday
night into Tuesday across Eastern and nearshore portions of the
bight. A Gale Watch may be issued later today or tonight. Strong
northeast winds will likely affect the San Pedro Channel out to
Catalina Island during this time.
