NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOS ANGELES/OXNARD CA
930 AM PDT Thu Oct 5 2017

.SYNOPSIS...
The offshore winds, gusty at times, should warm the temperatures
into Saturday with the skies mostly clear. The onshore flow will
increase the overnight marine layer into Sunday and drop the
temperatures. Breezy offshore winds should start a warming trend
from Tuesday to Wednesday. A low system will approach on Thursday.

.SHORT TERM...(TDY-SAT)

Forecast on track for the next few days as offshore flow takes
over through Saturday. Temps already trending warmer today with
light offshore flow in place and sunny skies. The NAM was a
little weaker with the upper support Friday but still enough to
keep a wind advisory in the conversation. It would be marginal at
this point and leaning towards not issuing one with the afternoon
forecast. Gradients are a little stronger Saturday but upper
support peaks Friday morning so Friday should have the best chance
for advisory level winds if they occur. Forecast temps seem in
line with past events of this magnitude, mainly 80s to around 90
for the coastal areas Friday and a few degrees warmer Saturday.
Valleys well into the 90s to around 100.

.LONG TERM...(SUN-WED)

For the extended, 00Z models in good agreement on Sunday then
diverge noticeably Monday through Wednesday. On Sunday, both the
GFS and ECMWF drop an upper low into the Great Basin. This will
result in an increase in onshore flow as well as a noticeable
influx of cooler air. So, Sunday will be noticeably cooler for all
areas with some stratus likely Sunday morning across the Los
Angeles coastal plain.

For Monday through Wednesday, the forecast gets more muddled as
the model solutions diverge. The GFS keeps the upper low spinning
over the Great Basin Monday and Tuesday while the ECMWF pushes the
low eastward. However, both models indicate rather strong offshore
gradients (LAX-DAG gradients ranging generally between -3.0
and -5.0 MB) both Monday and Tuesday. The GFS solution indicates
much better upper level support than the ECMWF. So, basically the
GFS solution would be a moderate to locally strong Santa Ana while
the ECMWF would likely be a weak Santa Ana event. Hopefully, the
models will come into a better consensus for Monday and Tuesday.
For Wednesday, both models indicate rising H5 heights as ridge
builds overhead with weaker offshore flow. So, Wednesday should be
warmer for all areas with some sub- advisory northeasterly winds.

.AVIATION...05/1145Z.

At 11Z, there was a weak surface based inversion at KLAX. The top
of the inversion was around 2500 feet with a temperature of 21C.

Clear skies across the region this morning, and VFR conditions are
expected across the entire areas through the period.

KLAX...High confidence in the 12Z TAF with VFR conditions
expected through the period.

KBUR...High confidence in the 12Z TAF with VFR conditions
expected through the period.

.MARINE...05/900 AM.

For the Outer Waters, SCA winds are not expected until this
afternoon so the SCA has been delayed until then. There is a 30%
chance that the winds will reach SCA levels again late Fri
afternoon and evening, then are likely late Sat afternoon through
Sun evening, especially across the northern two thirds of the
outer waters.

For the Inner Waters, good confidence in current forecast. For
the waters north of Point Sal, there is a 20-30% chance of SCA
level winds this afternoon and evening. Winds are expected to
remain below SCA levels on Friday, but nay increase to SCA levels
Saturday afternoon and evening. For the waters south of Point
Conception, winds and seas are expected to remain below SCA levels
through Mon.

.BEACHES...05/900 AM.

A fairly significant long period south swell will move into the
coastal waters later today and tonight, then persist through the
weekend. There is high confidence of strong rip currents and
elevated surf, especially on south facing beaches. Issued a Beach
Hazards Statement for Fri morning through Sun. There is a chance
that surf could reach High Surf Advisory levels on south facing
beaches late Fri through early Sun.

.FIRE WEATHER...05/900 AM.

Offshore flow will peak Friday and Saturday, resulting in warm
(Highs generally 90 to 100 degrees) and very dry (minimum humidity
6 to 12 percent) conditions everywhere. Winds will peak on Friday
with gusts in the 25 to 40 mph range from the mountains and down
to the coast...focused over Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

Widespread elevated fire weather danger will exist over all 4
counties through Saturday. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the
most critical and longest duration areas which include the Los
Angeles and Ventura County Mountains and the Santa Clarita Valley.
Currently this warning is only for Friday, but it may need to be
extended through Saturday. Other wind prone areas will see brief
Red Flag conditions, but likely not for the 6+ hour durations
needed for a Warning. Please advise the public to be extremely
cautious with potential fire starting sources.

Another offshore event is expected for Monday and Tuesday, but
there is a lot of uncertainty as to the strength of it. As it
stands, there is a potential for a moderate-to-strong Santa Ana
with widespread Red Flag conditions.
