TONIGHT AND THURSDAY NIGHT...

.Gusty north winds will be widespread across Southwest California
tonight. The strongest winds will be focused across southern
Santa Barbara county as well as the Highway 33 and Interstate
5 corridors in the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties,
where gusts between 50 and 60 mph will be likely at times. The
gusty north winds will affect much of Los Angeles county tonight,
including the western portions of the LA basin, where gusts
of 35 to 50 mph can be expected. These moderate to locally strong
winds could caused downed trees and powerlines as well as power
outages. The winds will shift to the northeast late tonight into
Thursday, with another round of moderate Santa Ana winds across
much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.  

A cold air mass settling into the region tonight will cause
temperatures to drop below freezing in some wind protected
locations such as interior San Luis Obispo County as well as the
Santa Ynez, Cuyama, Ojai, and Antelope Valleys. Even colder 
temperatures are likely Thursday night, resulting in the issuance
of a hard freeze watch for the Cuyama Valley and interior 
valleys of San Luis Obispo County.

Hard Freeze Watch, which is in effect from late Thursday night
through Friday morning. 

* TEMPERATURE...Temperatures will fall into the upper 20s to mid
  30s in wind protected locations tonight and remain near or below
  freezing through Thursday morning. Even colder temperatures are
  possible late Thursday night, falling into the mid to upper 20s
  in coldest wind protected areas.
  
* IMPACTS...A freeze can kill crops and sensitive vegetation, 
  and harm outdoor pets and livestock. Extended exposure to cold 
  can cause hypothermia. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

...HARD FREEZE WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM LATE TONIGHT THROUGH
FRIDAY MORNING...

* TEMPERATURE...Temperatures could fall into the mid 20s in wind
  protected locations in the early morning hours on Friday. 

* IMPACTS...A hard freeze can kill crops and sensitive 
  vegetation, and harm outdoor pets and livestock. Extended 
  exposure to cold can cause hypothermia. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Hard Freeze Watch means temperatures of 28 degrees or less for
two or more consecutive hours are possible. Protective measures
to save outdoor plants may be needed. Vulnerable animals and pets
should be kept indoors in a house or barn. Exposed pipes should
be wrapped to keep them from bursting.

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will move through the area today with partly to
mostly cloudy skies and possible showers for northern areas. Gusty
offshore winds with clearing skies will affect the area tonight
through Friday. Below normal temperatures can be expected during the
period, with frosts and freezes possible in sheltered areas during
the night and morning hours. High pressure and weaker offshore flow
will bring fair and milder conditions to southwestern California
Saturday through Christmas Day. This will be followed by slightly
cooler conditions with increasing onshore flow for Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM...(TDY-FRI)

Weak cold front sagging south through the Central Coast this
morning. Radars not picking up on much but based on satellite it
looks like it's a pretty low topped and at that distance from KMUX
and KVBX most of the beam could be shooting over the top. Precip
gauges not showing anything in the last hour over Monterey county
and only very light amounts in the last 2-3 hours so whatever
falls in SLO and nrn SBA County will also be very light.

A cooler day across the board with highs 3-6 degrees cooler than
Tuesday on average. The biggest impact will be the increase in
winds with and behind the frontal passage. Gusty west to northwest
winds will be increasing in all coastal areas by this afternoon as
well as the Antelope Valley and SB Mountains. Winds will start to
veer to the north later this evening and evening and generate
advisory level Sundowners in srn SB County as well as gusty winds
in the Santa Monica mtns and I5 corridor region. Then by Thu
morning winds will shift to northeast as we complete the
transition to a low grade Santa Ana event for LA/Ventura counties.

***From previous discussion***

The big news for Friday will be the morning temperatures. There
will not be as much wind as tonight and the airmass will still be
quite cold. Many areas will see the coldest temps of the season so
far. The Antelope Vly is setting up for temps in the teens. Max
temps will rebound and most areas will be near their seasonal
norms.

.LONG TERM...(SAT-TUE)

Both the GFS and EC agree that ridging and offshore flow will be
in control of the weather for the weekend. Skies will be clear.
There may be some morning canyon breezes but nothing near advisory
levels. Overnight lows will be cooler than normal but there will
be a day warming trend through Sunday.

Both the EC and GFS agree that the ridge will persist into Monday.
Oddly the EC forecasts much cooler temps than the GFS. Cannot see
any real reason for the cooler EC temps and kept the warmer GFS
temps in the forecast with plenty of upper 70s and even some lower
80s.

GFS and EC disagree on the Tuesday forecast with the EC
forecasting weak ridging and the GFS bring a sharp trof into the
state. Went with a fairly generic forecast with cooler temps than
Monday for now and will wait to see if the mdls can agree a little
better tomorrow.

.AVIATION...20/1100Z.

At 09Z, there was a weak marine layer depth near 700 feet deep at
KLAX. The top of the inversion was around 1700 feet with a
temperature of 13 degrees Celsius.

Low confidence in forecast south of Point Conception, moderate to
high confidence in forecast north of Point Conception. MVFR
conditions will spread into all coastal and valley terminals
through 18Z. Periods of moderate to strong turbulence and wind
shear could impact all terminals today behind the frontal passage.

KLAX...There is a 30 percent chance of VFR conditions lingering
until 14Z. Otherwise, VFR conditions will likely delay until
01Z-03Z. After 03Z, there is a 30 percent chance of cross winds
lighter than the current forecast and a 10 percent chance of cross
winds stronger than the current forecast. Periods of moderate to
strong wind shear and turbulence are possible between 01Z and 08Z.

KBUR...There is a 40 percent chance that VFR conditions could
linger until 14Z. Otherwise, VFR conditions will likely delay
until around 01Z. Periods of moderate to strong wind shear and
turbulence are possible after 01Z.

.MARINE...20/900 AM.

High confidence in W to NW winds increasing rapidly this afternoon
across the coastal waters. There is a 80 percent chance of gale
force winds across the outer waters, mainly for this afternoon
and this evening. Across the northern inner waters, there is a 40
percent of gale force winds. Seas will likely also approach
hazardous levels across the coastal water between this afternoon
and tonight as periods shorten due to the wind.

For the SBA Channel and the southern inner waters, NW SCA winds
will shift to the N to NE overnight tonight. Gusty NE winds are
expected late tonight through Thursday morning, especially near
shore between Rincon Point and Pacific Palisades. There is a 70
percent chance that Small Craft Advisories could be extend into
late Thursday morning or Thursday afternoon.
