I made an update to the forecast for this evening to include a
mention of showers and thunderstorms over far northern Illinois.
Although boundary layer conditions are quiet dry across the area
this afternoon, some very steep lapse rates have set up over the
region under the cold upper trough (500 MB temperatures in excess
of -35 C) moving overhead. As result, showers, and even a few
high based thunderstorms have developed over portions of Iowa
this afternoon. This activity will shift eastward, possibly
impacting portions of far northern Illinois this evening. As a
result, I have added a slight chance mention for a few
thunderstorms. Although no severe weather is expected, some of
these showers could result in some small hail and/or localized
wind gusts of 35-40 MPH due to the extensive dry air in the lower
levels.

.SHORT TERM...
300 PM CST

Tonight and Wednesday...

Main forecast concerns through Wednesday are winds... and conditions
favorable for a high grass/wildfire potential. Both will
culminate during the late morning through afternoon hours
Wednesday. In the near term... winds have actually eased (very)
slightly past 1-2 hours from earlier in the day... likely due to
weak troffing in the surface/boundary layer. Expect such easing to
follow a diurnal trend toward evening with decoupling somewhat
toward dark.

Upper level short wave over western Iowa will to continue to sweep
east this evening brushing the northern part of the state.
Steepening lapse rates ahead of the shortwave helping scattered
showers develop well to our west. While can't totally rule out a
residual shower making it into the far northwest part of the
forecast area this evening... will ride with a dry forecast given
expect this activity to be well on the wane by dark and given loss
of diurnal component of the forcing and relatively dry airmass in
place.

Tight cyclonic pressure gradient remains in place across the area
Wednesday with slow moving vigorous surface low north of the
great lakes more reminiscent of a fall storm rather then March.
With decent mid-upper level jet streak moving overhead and good
mixing per forecast sounding data expect wind advisory criteria
to be approached with gusts 45-50 mph late morning through mid
afternoon Wednesday. With dew points mixing to around 20... red
flag criteria may also be approached with min relative humidity
values lowering to around 30 percent during the afternoon hours,
maintaining a grass/wild fire threat/hazard with the gusty west
winds.

.LONG TERM...
338 PM CST

Wednesday night through Monday...

High pressure will allow the surface front to shift south of the
area, but an elevated front will linger over the area on Thursday
and into the weekend. The upper level pattern will suggest a
somewhat progressive west northwest flow that will allow a series of
shortwaves to propagate towards the region. Interaction with the
baroclinic zone will lead to period chances for precipitation.
Timing differences and strength of the forcing vary greatly on model
guidance, but if anything were to occur timing would be Thursday
morning, night, and then again Saturday.

Thursday morning precipitation chances seem low with a rain/snow mix
possible, with another batch Thursday night which would then be all
snow. While these do not appear to be a big deal, forecast soundings
show some elevated instability above the frontal zone to suggest
maintaining lower chances of snow, but lower confidence on timing
and impacts to appear to be on the lower side.

With high pressure either in the region, or to the north, the main
low level flow will be north/northeasterly. This will keep
temperatures more February-like than March like, especially Friday
and Saturday, with highs in the vicinity of freezing. The system for
Saturday does continue to suggest the better chances for snow will
be south of most of the LOT county warning area. Even the ECMWF
model, which is the farthest north, only has a few hundredths of QPF
along and south of I-80, which could bring up to an inch of snow in
the far southern counties if the northern solution verifies.

High pressure will retreat Sunday into Monday which will open the
door to a series of additional clipper-like systems Sunday night
into Monday. Much will hinge on the low track with these as to the
impacts locally, and models have not handled these all the superbly
at this distance this season, but there could be a shot of snow
again Sunday night into Monday morning. Monday morning is a ways
out, but has the best model agreement at this point. While we
moderate some early next week, active northwest flow will continue.

.AVIATION...
For the 00Z TAFs...

544 pm...Main forecast concern remains winds through Wednesday
evening. Southwest winds will diminish some early this evening but
remain gusty into the 20-25kt range at times. Speeds and gusts
will likely diminish further after midnight but strong winds
remain aloft so low level wind shear will be a concern. Speeds and
gusts will quickly increase after sunrise Wednesday morning and
forecast soundings suggest prevailing gusts 35-40kts for much of
the day and there could be a period in the late morning with
higher gusts. Wind directions remain generally westerly or west/
southwest Wednesday. Speeds/gusts will quickly diminish with
sunset Wednesday evening with winds turning northwest and likely
under 10kts Wednesday evening.

A weak trough will move across the area this evening with
increasing mid clouds and the potential for sprinkles or a few
showers. An isolated thunderstorm is also possible...though the
bulk of this activity is expected to remain near the WI/IL border
and into southern WI. Added vicinity mention at rfd for this
evening but confidence regarding coverage and duration at the rest
of the terminals is low enough to maintain a dry forecast. cms

.MARINE...
338 PM CST

An active near term pattern on the lake will ease somewhat
later in the week. A very deep cyclone will continue to strengthen
tonight into Wednesday just west of Hudson Bay before it will drift
east and fill later Wednesday and Wednesday night. Expect westerly
gales to return to the entire lake tonight and through Wednesday as
a secondary cold frontal surge shifts over the lake.
Higher end gales are possible in this setup with a deep low to the
north of Lake Michigan. High pressure will build into the Upper
Midwest later this week. The low in Canada will weaken but still
linger. After a break in winds briefly Thursday with a weak high
over the lake, the high across the Upper Midwest will send another
cold front across the lake Friday, and will result in northwest
winds to 30 kt. Calmer conditions are then expected this weekend as
a portion of the high will shift over Lake Michigan. A clipper
system will approach the southern tip of Lake Michigan early Monday.
