Through tonight...

A warm front is lifting north through the region this morning, and
temperatures have been rising overnight. Temperatures will rise to
around freezing today, and then continue to rise overnight.

An upper level vorticity streamer will pass over the region this
evening, and provide enough forcing for light snow this evening.
Despite ample forcing, forecast soundings feature dry layers that
could inhibit snow. Therefore, only expecting light, inefficient
snow and less than a half inch of accumulation.  A warm layer forms
aloft resulting in rain overnight. However, the surface has been
below freezing for a long time now so thinking surface temps will
warm slower than air temps. Therefore, a brief period of freezing
rain is possible overnight. Minor ice accumulations are possible
mainly along and north of I-80 and the Tuesday morning commute may
be impacted. Have medium-high confidence in freezing rain
occurring, but medium-low confidence in how much ice will
accumulate.

Tuesday through Sunday...

Temperatures continue to rise into the 40s Tuesday so any ice that
does accumulate Tues morning should quickly melt.  Rain ends from
west to east as the surface low continues northeast to Ontario.
Precip may turn back over to sleet or snow late in the afternoon,
but no accumulation or impact is expected.  Gusty south winds will
also become west behind the low's cold front this afternoon/evening.

Active weather continues this week and there will be additional
chances for wintry mix/ice accumulation.  High temps Wed will range
from the mid 30s to the mid 40s, but a cold front moves through Wed
night.  Rain is possible Wed afternoon ahead of the next surface
low, but the best chance for precip is Wed night. Temperatures fall
to below freezing along and north of I-88 and freezing rain is
probable. Have medium-low confidence in how much ice may accumulate,
but medium-high confidence in freezing rain occurring.  The rest of
the forecast area will see rain.

Precip ends Thursday afternoon, and temps will range from around
freezing near RFD to around 50 in NW Indiana.  High pressure moves
in over the northern Great Lakes and keeps precip south of us
Friday.  A chance of snow spreads north Friday night into Saturday
morning. Similar to today's forecast, a warm nose forms aloft, and
may result in a wintry mix of precip through the weekend. It's
too far out to get into specific precip types and amounts, but it
could be a very messy weekend.

For the 12Z TAFs...

Concerns:
1) Chance for light snow/flurries this afternoon
2) Wintry mix overnight
3) Lowering cigs to MVFR tonight and IFR overnight into Tuesday.
4) Gusty SSW winds overnight

A disturbance across the northern and central plains will move
east today and bring a period of light snow/flurries to areas
largely along and north of a DKB-DPA-ORD line in a brief period of
modest forcing, though limited moisture would likely limit impacts
to brief vsby reductions, and possibly a quick dusting given the
cold ground.

After this wave passes the evening period seems fairly quiet until
the surge of lower level moisture from the south arrives, mainly
after the 4-5z time frame and focused on the overnight hours.
With a continued south wind advecting a warmer airmass north,
surface temperatures when precipitation arrives will be rising
through and above freezing in many locations. The kicker will be
after having an extended deep cold period, surface/pavement
temperatures will be slower to respond, especially initially with
dewpoints coming in below freezing. Forecast soundings depict that
the main precipitation type will be some form of
liquid...though briefly snow/sleet initially but not very heavy,
with a transition to ra/fzra. Pavement temps will play a large
role in determining impacts from the liquid precip as raw
temperature guidance suggest low to mid 30s initially, but expect
at least some localized slick/icy spots. Temps in the 40s Tuesday
should then reduce issues Tuesday. Confidence on p-type
transitions is medium.

High confidence in lowering cigs overnight but low on how low
things will get. Feel moderate-high confidence on IFR arriving
overnight but only low-moderate on its timing and how long it
lasts. Precipitation type will again be liquid Tuesday. Other than
a brief flip in winds to SE overnight, S winds will be increasing
with gusts to the mid 20s certainly plausible.

Ship observations overnight support continuing the gale warning
for the next few hours before the gradient between high pressure
to the southeast and a low crossing southern Canada slackens at
least for a time today.

But conditions will remain unsettled across Lake Michigan for much
of the coming week. South winds ramp back up tonight as low
pressure will organize across the high plains. The low will
deepen and track to the northern Great Lakes by Tuesday evening.
The gradient ahead of the low appears strong enough for gales
across the southern tier of Lake Michigan Tuesday morning. Then
once the low moves farther northeast while still strengthening,
westerly winds once again reach near gale levels. The best chance
for gales behind the low will be across northern Lake Michigan
Tuesday evening closer to the low where the stronger pressure
rises will be.

Another low will track just to the south of the lake Wednesday
night with gusty north winds. Another strong high will build in
behind the low late in the week with a cold front, with a
north/east wind component expected through the weekend as
additional lows will approach in active southwest flow.

Precipitation type...Snow will turn over to rain overnight. Brief
periods of freezing rain are expected.

Ice Accumulation...Minor ice accumulations are possible mainly
along and north of I-80. Any ice that does form should melt
Tuesday morning as temperatures will rise to well above freezing.

Impacts...Surface temperatures will likely warm slower than air
temperatures. Any ice accumulation may result in slippery surfaces
that may cause hazardous traveling conditions into Tuesday
morning. Tuesday mornings commute may be impacted.
