...The National Weather Service in Elko has issued a Flood Warning
for the Humboldt River At Palisade affecting Eureka County...
Well above normal temperatures in recent days have resulted in an
accelerated melting of nearby mountain snows. The Humboldt River
has been rising, and is expected to reach the Minor Flood Stage
of 7.0 feet at Palisade Monday morning. The river is forecast to
continue it's gradual rise through at least the middle of next week.

For the Lower Humboldt, including Palisade...Battle Mountain...Comus...
and Winnemucca...minor flooding is occurring, with Moderate flooding
forecast.
River levels on the Humboldt downstream from Elko are already high
and more snow melt is making its way from the tributary streams
into the main channel....again.
The Humboldt River will continue to rise downstream from Elko and
likely approach or even exceed moderate flood stages in the next
several days.
There is some uncertainty in the actual timing and rises due to
the number of streams running high which have no gages on them
but are contributing lots of water to the main stem. Please use
caution.
Turn around. Don't drown.

just below minor flood stage, and forecast to rise into flood stage
on Tuesday.
River levels will continue to rise over the coming week. At this
time the forecast calls for the river to rise up to around 7.9 feet
by Friday, which would be just below moderate flood stage.

The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain is currently just under moderate
flood stage, but is forecast to rise well into moderate flood stage
through the upcoming weekend. Additional rises thereafter are possible.
The Humboldt River at Comus is rising steadily and will likely be in
moderate flood stage later this afternoon. The river is forecast to
rise into major flood stage by this weekend. Additional rises are
possible thereafter.
All rivers on the lower Humboldt are rising and will continue to rise
through the week. With additional precipitation this week and continued
warm temperatures, there is uncertainty to the forecast. Interested persons

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 230 AM PDT Sat Mar 18 2017 .SYNOPSIS...The area will be undergoing a pattern change from sunny and dry weather to more clouds and a rainy regime. High pressure will slide to the east, allowing for broad southwesterly flow aloft to return. This is turn will help to steer multiple disturbances across the area through the forecast period. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday. Models in good agreement in moving high pressure east and is replaced by southwest flow through the period. Moisture increases rapidly across the region with temps staying above normal. Weak jet streak approaches from northwest this afternoon with weak cold front for lower lift. Result will be widespread showers moving/developing from northwest to southeast across the region. Sufficient instability/ventilation to warrant isolated thunderstorms this afternoon into evening over much of the region. Brief/isolated heavier showers to boot. Showers continue through period. Freezing levels are WAY high...today they are above most of the higher peaks. Likely see rain above 10000 feet msl on top of snowpack. See "Hydrology" section below. Freezing levels drop through Monday, but only to 8000-9500 feet msl for continued mostly rain. Snow at highest levels only. .LONG TERM...Monday night through Saturday. Southwest flow takes over Monday night and persists into Tuesday afternoon. This is in response to a storm system moving into the Pacific Northwest. By Tuesday afternoon, enough instability and moisture will be present for isolated thunder to accompany some of the showers. Snow levels will remain high with the southwest flow, with no valley snow expected. Given the southwest flow, not expecting significant amounts of precip and would not be shocked to see the models back off on this as we approach early next week. By Wednesday and Thursday, the system moves through the Great Basin. Model uncertainty increases with differences on the structure and placement of the upper level circulation. The EURO favors a more southern route through southern NV, while the GFS favors a splitting system with energy sliding along the Cali coast and another piece moving through SE Idaho. This system appears a little cooler, with snow levels potentially reaching some valley floors. Timing, type, and amount of precip will depend on the final track and whether or not the system splits through the Great Basin. Heights rise again Friday with southwest flow in approach of the next storm system. This system looks to be the strongest for next week, but this is 7 days out. A lot could change, but confidence is high an active weather pattern is on tap for central and northern Nevada. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions through the next 24hrs is expected. An outside shot at a shower will be possible at KWMC/KEKO this afternoon. Gusty southerly/southwesterly winds will be present at all TAF sites. Generally winds will be 15-25kts, with gusts to 35kts possible. The highest winds look to be for KWMC/KEKO/KELY. && .HYDROLOGY...Snow pack remains high in the higher terrain with high SWE amounts. Plenty of water to melt out. Lower levels are largely barren now, which, for the sake of flooding, is good. Temps will be above normal through the weekend with a steady but moderate cool down for the next week. But...rivers already running high and moving toward flood stages, again. The Humboldt River is running high from near Elko downstream all the way to the Pershing County line. It's already in flood stage at Battle Mountain and Comus and forecast to rise and approach moderate flood, again, over the next few days. Tributaries to the Humboldt are also either high or flooding and forecast to continue. Other streams in the Snake River system on the Oregon and Idaho borders are also high or in flood stage and will continue to do so as snow pack there is very high still. Further south in central and eastern Nevada, not as much snow pack but rains on higher terrain and warm temps will bring some streams to baneful or minor flooding as well as cause normally dry washes or intermittent streams to flow heavily.
