Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...
Similar scenario from the previous discussions and earlier
sounding discussion. Circulation around an upper level low over
Hudson Bay and the associated positive tilted trough extends to
deep south TX. High amplitude pattern with a steep ridge over the
west CONUS and deep troughing over the east. Moist SW flow
continues to bring our third day of overrunning precipitation. A
stretched out low was located in the Gulf of Mexico along an old
frontal boundary will continue to push east into FL. Jet streak
rounding the base of the trough pushing another impulse over
Louisiana and Mississippi. This kink in the flow will be the best
chance to see winter precipitation. Radar mosaic shows this
impulse in southwest LA and it will push east- north east this
morning. Some bright banding evident of high winter precipitation
rates. KBTR reported PRESRR and unknown precip at 0853Z indicative
of the area out ahead of this impulse as precipitation turns to
snow by 0930Z. Several hours of light snow reported at the KMCB
ASOS with several sleet reports overnight. Still concern for sleet
and snow on the back edge of the precipitation as we see melting
thus wet bulb cooling of the 700mb inversion layer. HRRR handling
the impulse fairly well per radar. The best chance for sleet and
snow will enter our forecast area from the west at 0930Z and move
east and exit the MS Gulf Coast around 1600Z. Then expect some
light rain mixed with sleet and snow flurries in the cold air with
little if any accumulation.

.LONG TERM...
This current trough will be the kicker to finally clear things out
for the weekend. In the wake will be very cold temperatures with
the lowest values Saturday morning. Mid to upper 20s forecast at
most locations with the exception of lower 30s near tidal lakes
and the Gulf. Several impulses continue next week around the
Canadian low pressure system, however dry conditions will prevail
next week with another surge of cold air Tuesday lasting the
remainder of the week.

.AVIATION...
Prevailing CIGS will remain stable at OVC035 for most terminals
through tonight. TEMPO groups will be used for decks dropping to
around BKN003 as RA and SN move through the area. Conditions may
move back and forth from RA to SN but will show as prevailing SN
north of the lake and RA south of the lake. North winds will remain
elevated mainly at lee side lake locations. Some accumulations are
expected on elevated locations during the heaviest showfall rates
mainly during the morning hours. Will keep any mention of this
wintry mix out of terminals south of Lake Pontchartrain for now
although there is a small chance that SN could mix in this morning
for MSY and NEW.

.MARINE...
A surface low moving east through the Gulf this morning continues to
interact with strong high pressure moving south over inland areas
causing winds to remain elevated. Northerly winds will remain around
20 to 25 knots over mainly protected waters, but winds will rise to
30 to 35 knots as one moves farther offshore over the open gulf. A
gale warning will remain for most of the open gulf waters through
noon today and through 4pm for only offshore zones. All marine areas
will be in SCA after 4pm. Winds will ease somewhat and likely drop a
bit below Small Craft Advisory (SCA) criteria over tidal lakes,
sounds and nearshore coastal waters tonight into Saturday morning,
but remain well into SCA criteria for offshore coastal waters well
into the day Saturday.

This prolonged strong northerly wind event has driven water away
from the coast causing very low water levels especially for inland
navigable waterways. Once winds ease through Sunday, mariners should
take extra caution when navigating waterways due to the low water
levels. A fairly steady cold rain will be the norm for all marine
areas through today, and these conditions will set the stage for
hypothermia conditions. Dry conditions will return for the weekend,
but it will remain on the cold side despite winds easing by Sunday.
Another cold front is expected to move through Tuesday with another
rise in wind speeds but not to the degree we have observed lately.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of Southeast
Louisiana...South Mississippi and the adjacent coastal waters.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A winter weather advisory is in effect through noon today for all
of southern Mississippi and a large portion of southeast Louisiana
north and west of the tidal lakes.

Gale warnings remain in effect through 4 pm today for a large
portion of the open gulf waters. Small craft advisories remain in
effect for the remaining coastal waters today and will replace
all gale warnings late today.

A strong cold front will move through the area today bringing a
possible hard freeze to the northern tier of the area while the
majority of the remaining areas will have freezing temperatures
tonight and Saturday night. Wind chill temperatures are expected
to fall to the low to mid 20s for some areas.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Small craft advisories are expected to be lowered through the day
Saturday for all marine areas.

Freezing temperatures are expected again Saturday night for most
of the area.

northeast at 80 mph.

Francisville, Clinton, Liberty, Greensburg, Amite, Oak Hills Place,

Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations. Be

the northshore. Roadways may become slippery in several locations
during the strongest bursts of snowfall this morning, especially
those roadways that are elevated. Visibilities are also being
reduced to a half mile or less within the heaviest snowfall.
Please use extreme caution when transiting these areas today. A
winter weather advisory remains through noon today with
accumulations expected to be 1 to 2 inches.
