.SHORT TERM...Well Happy New Year to everyone, lets see if we can
make this a good one. That said it doesn't look like the weather
wants to cooperate with the "good" part to start the year. This
forecast package will have everything from more heavy rain to
severe weather to a return of cold temps but the latest suite of
mdls did back of on the wintry precip threat.

We did get a pretty good shot of rain yesterday afternoon and
evening with radar estimates of widespread 2-3 inches of rain and
pocket of 4 to 5 inches.

Today will be another wet day but we should not have quite the
efficiency we saw yesterday from the showers and thunderstorms.
There will still be a great deal of moisture to work with as pws
will still be around 1.5" and there will be a nose of higher theta E
air pumping in from the southwest. Main differences from yesterday
is upper lvl divergence will not be anything like we saw yesterday
and even LL convergence will be far lower. In fact h85 winds will
continue to weaken from current values(35-40kts at 6z this morning)
throughout the day tomorrow. No real focus today as well with just
broad lift from the southwest flow aloft.

Tonight and tomorrow things will begin to pick back up especially on
Monday. Our main concern during this time frame is the potent low
that is currently spinning over srn CA and the nrn Baja. This
feature will open up and quickly shift east into TX during the
overnight hrs tonight. It will begin to take on a negative tilt as
it moves towards the Lower MS Valley while also inducing
cyclogenesis over the ARKLATEX. A prefrontal trough will surge
across the area during the day and this could be the focus of
storms to develop. Overall rain chances look like no doubt for
Monday again and there could be some heavy rain associated with
this as an additional 2 to 5 inches of rain from now through
Monday evening is possible. However the bigger concern is turning
towards severe weather.

Dynamics will be there. The impulse moving across the region will be
quite potent, providing significant forcing. Also models still
indicate a very strong surge of dry air in the mid lvls accelerating
and nosing into the region. This may provide that extra kick to
convection over the area by midday/afternoon. The thermodynamic
field is actually not too shabby for early Jan. Mid lvl lapse
rates will be on the order of 6.5 to possibly 7 C/km while MLCape
could approach 2k j/kg. Even Cape in the lowest 3km could be
around 200 j/kg. The kinematic field is as usual in the cool
season quite supportive. A mid lvl jet streak looks to move
through during the day with h5 winds possibly approaching 65kts,
h7 approaching 65kts will nose into the region. Even more
impressive is the LL jet that will respond to the dynamics moving
in. H85 winds could be in excess of 50kts as it traverses the wrn
half of the CWA. This continues to translate down with h925 winds
in excess of 40 kts. The other impressive feature could be the
development of a coupled jet structure. A piece of the upper jet
will lift north from the ARKLATEX towards IL/IN while another jet
surges southeast through TX and begins to round the disturbance
across the nwrn Gulf. Divergence will be rather impressive over
the Lower MS Valley due to this. This wind field will also
provide ample shear, especially through the morning and into the
afternoon hrs. 0-6km bulk shear could be around 50kts and with
winds veering with hght 0-1km and 0-3km helicity will be around
200 and 300 m2/s2 respectively. Winds become more unidirectional
and a tad weaker by late afternoon and into the evening but if
convection is as strong as expected much of it could quickly push
off to the northeast before the evening hours. Synoptically the
pattern is typical of our severe weather pattern with the
disturbance moving through the Lower Ms Valley but no too close to
us. The track of the sfc low is also favorable as well lifting
from nrn LA to central TN however, the sfc pressure field is not
quite as low as you would expect with our severe weather events.

Well with all of that coming together there appears to be a pretty
decent risk of severe weather. SPC has put the entire outlook area
under an Enhanced Risk for severe storms. All modes of severe
weather look possible with damaging winds the greatest risk however,
any discrete storms that develop ahead of the main convective system
will have an enhanced risk for tornadoes given the amount of shear
expected. There is even the risk that a few tornadoes could be
strong, EF2 or greater.

Things should quickly come to an end Monday evening with much if not
all of the area drying out at or slightly after midnight. /CAB/

.LONG TERM...After Monday things look to be quiet for the most
part. First as for confidence in the extended portions of the
fcst, it is extremely low. Medium range mdls continue to waffle
back in forth and by Fri the ECMWF and GFS have something on the
order of a 30 degree or even higher difference for low temps Fri
morning. With focus mainly on the severe potential Monday have
opted to stick with a blend of the models and make very small
adjustments to the extended fcst. The key to the extended fcst
will be what happens to the strong piece of energy over the PAC NW
early this week. If it detaches and retrogrades some the L/W
trough will amplify and thus send us the much colder air for the
second half of the week. If it tries to shear out merging with
the L/W trough over the CONUS, the pattern will not amplify as
much and thus the much of the colder arctic air will remain well
north of the CWA until the next front pushes through possibly next
weekend. /CAB/

.AVIATION...

IFR to LIFR conditions at several terminals this morning due to
FG/BR. The lowest vsby areas are where the most rain fell such as
KBTR, KMSY, KNEW, and KHDC. BKN to OVC all locations will continue
with some improvement in ceilings through the morning. -SHRAs will
continue, however coverage will be much lower than the previous 24
hours. /KEG/

.MARINE...

As the current system pushes east, a low pressure will dig into the
SW U.S. GFS model seems reasonable in the track and speed with the
low moving from around the Yuma, AZ area this morning to upper Texas
coast in 24 hours then north to Shreveport by midday Monday.  The
result will be another round of showers and thunderstorms in the
coastal waters with winds once again picking up.  Issued a Small
Craft Advisory with this last system and it looks like this next one
will push that criteria once again. Winds could exceed 20 knots
mainly in the offshore waters on Monday.  With the higher winds
comes higher seas reaching 3 to 4 feet near shore and 5 to 6 feet
offshore Monday. Mariners should use caution on Monday due to the
high winds and seas, plus the enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms
as well.  Winds and seas will be higher near the stronger storms on
Monday. Zonal flow will bring more tranquil condition for the
remainder of the week. /KEG/

MOVES FROM THE DESERT SW TO THE UPPER TEXAS COAST NOW THROUGH
MONDAY MORNING. THIS WILL BRING MORE RAIN WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR
SOME LOCALIZED FLOODING. THERE IS AN ENHANCED THREAT OF SEVERE
WEATHER ASSOCIATED WITH THIS NEXT SYSTEM WITH THE MAIN THREAT
BEING DAMAGING THUNDERSTORM WIND GUSTS AND A FEW TORNADOES. WINDS
IN THE OFFSHORE WATERS WILL ONCE AGAIN INCREASE TO SMALL CRAFT
ADVISORY CRITERIA WITH 20-25 KNOTS AND SEAS MAINLY REACHING 6-7
FEET OFFSHORE.
