Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 1124 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 410 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 The primary forecast challenges through Saturday afternoon are temperatures and snow chances. As of 21z, all of western Nebraska is in northerly winds as a lee side sfc low works into Kansas and a 1045mb+ high pushes into the Dakotas. Light snow showers and flurries are ongoing across the Sandhills with the push of really cold air/low level lift and some moisture. Precip... Gradually increase PoP across the north as moisture and mid-level fgen increase ahead of a shortwave. Lift isn't overly impressive, but enough is present when combined with near saturation sub H7, supports light snow. Kept chances going into Saturday morning and afternoon as isentropic upglide strengthens (mainly 280K). Not thinking anything more than light snow given the lack of theta-E folding and negative EPV. However, the lift and moisture coincide in the DGZ and SLR's will be climatologically high (15- 20:1), so an inch accumulation is possible along and north of Hwy 20. Farther south, included flurries as mid-level support isn't as strong, but weak lift and some moisture still appear in the low levels. Temps... Kept at the low end or below guidance, resulting in subzero lows everywhere tonight and highs ranging from around -5F far northeast to 15F far southwest Saturday. Despite a late push for return flow on Saturday, models are consistent with strong CAA continuing as H85 temps drop to around -22C. Wind will generally remain under 15mph, but when combined with subzero lows, don't see a problem meeting the criteria for the Wind Chill Advisory across the northern half of the CWA. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 410 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 Bitter cold temperatures remain forecast Saturday night through Monday. An upper level disturbance will track southeast across Western Nebraska Saturday night. This will bring a chance for light snow or flurries overnight. The highest POPs near 60 percent will be across Boyd and northeast Holt county during the evening. New snow accumulations there could reach 1 inch. Across southwest Nebraska, a chance for flurries overnight. A reinforcing shot of arctic air will move in with lows near or slightly colder than the previous forecast. Gordon and Valentine 17 below, North Platte 9 below, to 2 below at Imperial. When combining wind, wind chills forecast to fall to 25 to 35 below north central and 12 to 25 below south By Sunday morning. Sunday will be the coldest day as 850mb temps only range from -18 to -24 celsius. Highs remain near previous forecast from 6 below near and north of highway 20 to zero to 6 above southwest. Wind chills will be a concern throughout the day, improving to only 10 below to 25 below most areas. Flurries will also be possible, especially across the southwest, where better isentropic upglide and better saturation exists. For Sunday night, arctic high pressure will build in, reaching near 1055mb across central and eastern Nebraska. Lows by Monday morning forecast to reach near 20 below north central and central and 10 to 15 below southwest. A few lows could approach 25 below. Wind chill values likely to fall to as low as 25 below to 40 below. Due to the long duration and impacts expected, have issued a wind chill watch Saturday night through Monday morning. Only a slight moderation in highs Monday to the single digits. Tuesday look to warmup up to the upper 20s and lower 30 most areas ahead of the next cold front to push through Tuesday night. This will bring in cold highs from the teens to 20s Wednesday. Thursday and Friday highs look limited to the 20s as an upper low rotates across the Hudson Bay region. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night) Issued at 1124 PM CST Fri Dec 29 2017 Multiple cloud layers affecting most of north central nebraska but a persistent low stratus deck extending from Sheridan county to near KBBW.
