...Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Expected...
Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches will inundate much of the area
through Friday. This amount of rainfall will lead to additional
flooding of lowland areas...streams...creeks and rivers. Pay
attention to forecasts and warnings for the rest of this week and
this weekend. Be prepared to move to higher ground if you live in
flood prone areas and remember, turn around, don't drown.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)

There were very few changes to the short term; the ongoing flood
watch appears on track. Widespread river flooding is expected as
well as flooding of some lowlands. The leading edge of rain
arrived overnight as isentropic lift increased and the atmosphere
saturated over the area. Periods of rain will continue into
Friday as a TROWAL develop over the area. The 00Z GFS has trimmed
back rainfall amount a little from the 18Z run, but still supports
amounts over 3 inches in the main axis with locally higher
amounts over 4 inches. This generally matches support from other
models including the ECMWF and the Canadian ensembles. Highs both
today and Friday will be in the 40s to around 50...15 to 20
degrees below normal given clouds and rain with a chilly north to
northeast flow.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday)

Very chilly air will be over the area this weekend as an upper
level trof remains lodged over the eastern North American
interior. The challenges this period include forecast low
temperatures and subsequent chances for frost over a tri of nights
including Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights. Skies are expected
to be clear Saturday night and Sunday night and provide ideal
conditions for radiational cooling. Record low temperatures over
these 3 nights range from 27 to 29 at South Bend and Fort Wayne.
Although records may not be reached, widespread frost is likely
over many areas and freezing temperatures are possible Saturday
night and Sunday night; and to a lesser extent Monday night.
Temperatures are expected to drop well down into the 30s and
possibly reach 32 degrees over the locally colder spots this
weekend. Model output from both the GFS and ECMWF favor even
colder lows from 30 to 35 degrees. It is likely frost advisories
will need to be issued later this week. Freeze warnings are also
possible. Otherwise, conditions are expected to stay dry Saturday
through Monday with temperatures below normal. Some moderation in
temperatures is expected Tuesday and Wednesday along with a
chance for rain.

surface flow sufficient for long duration low level wind shear

Concerns persist for moderate to occasionally heavy rain through
Friday as a strong upper level system moves northeast into the
forecast area. Model support for this heavy rain scenario
continues favorable. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 3.5 inches appear
likely, except somewhat lower amounts on the northwest fringe of
the forecast area near Lake Michigan. Event total rainfall amounts
of over 4 inches are possible. Although flash flooding is not
expected with this system, light to moderate rain over saturated
grounds for an extended period will cause rises on rivers and
bring the potential for more river flooding. The latest river
forecasts indicate several rivers reaching moderate flood stages.
Major flooding is also possible on some rivers. Flooding of low
areas that have yet to drain from the past heavy rainfall will
likely undergo more widespread flooding. Rises on many area rivers
are likely through this weekend, even after the rain ends.
