Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lincoln IL 100 PM CDT Mon Mar 13 2017 .UPDATE... Issued at 1050 AM CDT Mon Mar 13 2017 Will continue the winter weather advisory today as 2-4 inches of snow has fallen over most of the advisory area with a few areas getting 4-4.5 inches. Still getting widespread light snow at late morning over much of CWA. Have a dry slot working into areas se of a Danville to Shelbyville line which is cutting down amounts of southeast CWA. Also have mixed light precipitation sw of Springfield including patchy freezing drizzle from Macomb to Jacksonville to Litchfield sw. Temperatures at 1030 am are 27-32F and have been nearly steady this morning just below freezing. 1016 mb surface low pressure over east central MO will track se into southeast KY by sunset today. Models gradually change light snow to light rain or diminish it from sw to ne during the afternoon. Additional snow accumulations should be less than 1 inch over ne CWA. Highs this afternoon in the mid 30s northern CWA and around 40F in southeast IL, so slick roads north of I-70 should gradually improve as temps rise above freezing in the afternoon. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 328 AM CDT Mon Mar 13 2017 08z/3am surface analysis shows 1015mb low over southwest Iowa...with a band of light warm-advection precipitation impacting much of central Illinois west of the I-57 corridor. The eastward progression of the precip shield has been slowed due to a dry boundary layer as evidenced by surface dewpoints initially in the teens earlier this evening. As the airmass continues to moisten from the top-down, light snow will eventually reach the far E/SE KILX CWA over the next couple of hours. Snowfall amounts have been minor thus far, with area webcams showing the ground covered in locations along/west of the Illinois River. As the surface low approaches, the mid-level dry slot seen on radar imagery across central/northern Missouri will push into the SW CWA early this morning. Forecast soundings across this area suggest a potential loss of ice crystals in the profile, which could cause the light snow to mix with or change to a period of freezing drizzle along/southwest of a Rushville to Taylorville line through 15z. Elsewhere around the area, light snow will continue through the morning: however, many high-res models indicate a clear decrease in areal coverage of the precipitation toward midday. With precip diminishing and temperatures warming into the middle to upper 30s by afternoon, snowfall totals will be held down across the southern half of the CWA. As expected, the greatest accumulations will be focused from the Peoria area northward where the precip will remain in the form of snow throughout the day. Based on latest projections, less than 1 inch will fall along and south of I-70...1 to 2 inches will occur along the I-72 corridor...and 3-5 inches are expected along/north of a Canton to Minonk line. Despite the low weakening and tracking into the Ohio River Valley, a few rain and snow showers will linger into the evening...with no additional snow accumulation expected. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) ISSUED AT 328 AM CDT Mon Mar 13 2017 Much colder weather will filter into central Illinois behind the departing system, with highs remaining in the 30s and overnight lows dipping into the teens through Wednesday. After that, the airmass will begin to modify as the upper trough relaxes and is replaced by zonal flow by the end of the week. The next storm system is progged to come into the picture on Friday: however, some discrepancies still exist between the GFS and ECMWF, so timing may be fine-tuned pending subsequent model runs. Main story further out in the extended will be the warming trend, as temperatures return to near normal in the 50s by next weekend. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1259 PM CDT Mon Mar 13 2017 An area of light snow with generally MVFR conditions and briefing IFR ceilings, to gradually diminish during the afternoon as 1016 mb surface low pressure over east central MO tracks quickly into se KY by early this evening.
