  Piatt, Sangamon, and Shelby. In east central Illinois, 
  Champaign, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Moultrie, 
  and Vermilion. In southeast Illinois, Clay, Crawford, 
  Effingham, Jasper, Lawrence, and Richland. 

* From Friday evening through Monday morning

* Periods of heavy rainfall are expected over the weekend. By 
  Monday morning between three and five inches of rainfall is 
  expected in an area near I-55 southeastward through much of 
  central and southeast Illinois. Locally heavier amounts are 
  possible between I-55 and I-57. At the current time the 
  heaviest rain is expected overnight Saturday.

Issued at 945 AM CDT Thu Apr 27 2017

Updated forecast this morning to add areas of drizzle into midday
across CWA and patchy drizzle into the afternoon over northern
CWA. Increased cloud cover and cooled high temperatures today,
especially over northern CWA where low clouds and drizzle linger
longest. Highs late this afternoon range from lower 50s northern
CWA from Peoria and Bloomington/Normal north, to around 60F in
southeast IL from I-70 southeast. Finally increased westerly winds
a bit higher as gusts have been in the 20-28 mph range this
morning.

14Z/9 am surface map shows strong 992 mb low pressure over
northern Lake Michigan with its cold front se of IL into eastern
IN and western KY/TN. Breezy westerly winds have ushered in cooler
air over central and southeast IL this morning, with temperatures
in the low to mid 40s over central IL, and upper 40s and lower 50s
in southeast IL. Mercury levels at 930 am range from 40F at
Galesburg to 52F at Lawrenceville and Mount Carmel airport. An
extensive area of stratus/stratocumulus clouds of 1-2k ft covered
IL and nearby states with patchy drizzle and spotty light rain
showers over CWA. Aloft a strong 538 dm 500 mb low was over
northern MN with deep upper level trof over the Midwest.

Latest forecast models lift surface low pressure from northern
Lake MI to ne of Lake Superior and deepening to 990 mb by sunset
today. Areas of drizzle and spotty light rain showers will
gradually diminish from sw to ne during afternoon while low clouds
decrease from the sw late this afternoon and early evening, with
cloud skies becoming partly cloudy.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
ISSUED AT 309 AM CDT Thu Apr 27 2017

Cold front continues to push slowly eastward, and was roughly
along a Lacon-Lincoln-Taylorville line at 2 am, with a low
pressure area centered just south of Bloomington. Initial band of
showers/storms has pushed east of the Indiana border, but
widespread showers behind the front were associated with the upper
wave that is lifting northeast toward west central Illinois. The
short-range models are in good agreement that much of this will
lift of the forecast area by 7 am as the low tracks to Lake
Michigan, with some lingering showers northwest of the Illinois
River for a couple hours beyond that. Forecast soundings show
skies remaining rather cloudy through the day, although some
clearing should start moving in from the southwest during the
afternoon as the low pulls away. Once the rain moves out, dry
conditions are expected until late tonight, when the next system
starts spreading a few showers into the far western CWA.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)
ISSUED AT 309 AM CDT Thu Apr 27 2017

Main focus remains with the copious rainfall expected over the
weekend, along with severe weather potential.

Southern branch of the jet stream was focused along the southern
tier of states this morning, but a developing upper low over
Utah/Colorado on Friday will force this northward. Developing
frontal boundary over central Illinois on Friday will result in
light rain showers during the morning, with some thunderstorms
possible by afternoon a frontal boundary drops southward. Latest
SPC Day2 outlook has a slight risk of severe weather from about
Shelbyville-Paris southward, with some enhanced chances near
Lawrenceville. NAM is much more generous with the instability, but
the GFS's MUCAPEs of up to 1000 J/kg and strong 0-6km shear
support some severe potential during the afternoon and early
evening.

Main show will be Friday night into Sunday evening, though, as a
strong transport of moisture takes place (widespread precipitable
water values of 1.5 to 2 inches much of the period).The front will
become stationary Friday night as it starts to parallel the upper
flow. Exact positioning of this boundary will be critical for the
heavy rain focus, with the southeast CWA favored Friday night and
the central CWA by Saturday afternoon as the front starts to edge
northward. Heaviest rains likely Saturday night with a widespread
1-2 inches in many areas, except the far southeast CWA where some
breaks in the rain will be developing by afternoon. A large
surface cyclone will develop through the weekend as a cutoff low
strengthens over the central Plains, and there is good agreement
among the longer range models of the surface low lifting northeast
into northern Illinois or southern Wisconsin by late Sunday
night. Stronger storms are possible Sunday afternoon as the cold
front pushes eastward, with very good rain chances continuing
Sunday night in the deformation zone behind the low. It will
likely take until Monday night to fully get the showers out of the
area, once the upper low moves to near Lake Superior.

Flood watches will likely be needed at some point, with
indications that totals will likely exceed 3-4 inches over much
of the forecast area. Will hold off on issuing them at the moment,
though, as the current rainfall ended up being less than
initially expected, and the initial wave should be able to absorb
some of the heavier rain.

Issued at 1240 PM CDT Thu Apr 27 2017

MVFR ceilings of 1.5-3k ft over central IL early this afternoon
will gradually lift to low end VFR during mid or late afternoon
and then scatter out from sw to ne between 23Z-02Z. Patchy drizzle
early this afternoon so carried VCSH for a few more hours
especially ne of SPI. Strong 991 mb surface low pressure over
eastern upper MI and eastern Lake Superior with its cold front
moves east into far western Ohio aned central KY/TN at midday.
Low pressure to deepen to 990 mb as it lifts ne to James Bay
Canada by 12Z/7 am Fri while 998 mb surface low pressure moves
east into sw OK. Some overrunning of frontal boundary/low pressure
sw of IL to bring chances of light rain showers sw IL by SPI later
tonight and over rest of central IL during Fri morning along with
return of MVFR ceilings of 2-3k ft. Breezy West winds 10-15 kts
and gusts of 18-24 kts early and mid afternoon, to diminish to
around 5 kts after sunset and become light and variable much of
tonight. Winds to become SE late tonight and increase to 10-16
kts during Fri morning.

through Sunday evening as a series of weather systems move
through the area. Rainfall amounts over this 3 day period could
range from 3 to 4.5 inches. The heavy rain falling on saturated
soil from earlier storms will produce rapid runoff and a potential
for localized flooding, as well as, river flooding across the
region.

In addition, there is a slight risk that some of the storms Friday
night could become severe with damaging winds and large hail the
main threat.

Flooding along the Little Wabash river near Clay City is expected
to develop early this weekend and continue into next week.
