Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wichita KS 316 AM CDT Thu Oct 26 2017 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday night) Issued at 307 AM CDT Thu Oct 26 2017 Main concern for this forecast will be the below freezing temps, initially expected in central KS for tonight, and areawide by Fri night/Sat morning. A significant clipper type shortwave will drop out of northern ND into the Great Lakes later today and Fri. This shortwave will help push a sharp dry cold front down across the forecast area later this morning, reaching central KS by 12z, and south central KS by 18z. Strong gusty winds behind the front, will lead to another windy day as strong cold advection drops south across the area late in the day. This will lead to sustained winds for the afternoon hours of 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph. So plan on expanding the wind advisory further south as the gusty winds move south for the late afternoon hours. Not expecting the brunt of the cold air to make it into the area until the evening/overnight hours, so expecting max temps today close to normals, with falling temps for the late afternoon into the evening hours. This shortwave dislodges some very chilly northern Canadian air straight south into the plains, with current model trends suggesting the coldest air dropping over the eastern half of KS. Expecting to see some of the coldest air of the fall, with the stout cold advection leading to temps falling below freezing in central KS late tonight or by early Fri morning. Latest short range models suggest portions of central KS will fall into the 28-30 deg range by early Fri morning, so will go with a freeze warning for portions of central KS with this in mind. Most model solutions show 850h temps of minus 6-8 deg. C dropping south by Fri and Fri night, with freezing temps expected to settle over the area by Fri night/early Sat morning. Expect to see a chilly raw temp day for the daytime hours on Fri, as temps remain in the upper 40s. Still a little bit of uncertainty on how cold, it will actually get Fri night, as the ECMWF shows 850H temps a little warmer, with the best radiational cooling, and ridge axis staying a little further to the west (over NW KS). But other model solutions suggest colder temps. So ECMWF looks like an outlier. So still expect to see a hard freeze for most locations by Fri night. Expect a very chilly day on Sat, given the cold start to the day, and the cold air still over the eastern half of the forecast area. Could see temps struggle to climb out of the lower 50s for highs on Sat afternoon. Ketcham .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Wednesday) Issued at 307 AM CDT Thu Oct 26 2017 Medium range models show a warming trend by the end of the weekend, as surface flow again shifts more to the west. This will lead to temps closer to normal by Sun with downslope flow. Another dry cold front looks to drop south, in the northerly flow for Sun night. Not expecting this front to be as cold as todays, but this will certainly push us back below normal for the beginning of the workweek. The medium range models gradually return the mid level flow to more of a zonal flow pattern next week, which will support an overall warming trend and dry weather. fire wx: The strong gusty northwest winds will spread over the area in the wake of a strong cold front, which should support very high grassland fire danger across mainly central KS.
