Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Joaquin Valley - Hanford CA 418 AM PST Wed Feb 8 2017 .SYNOPSIS... Some light to moderate precipitation will continue today, mainly over the Sierra Nevada around Yosemite NP. Dry conditions should prevail tonight through early Thursday then another system moves through Thursday afternoon and Friday. High pressure will build over the region ruing the weekend and maintain dry weather through early next week with Tule Fog likely over the San Joaquin Valley. && .DISCUSSION... Much quieter radar picture now with mainly light precipitation from Merced to Yosemite NP. Radar estimates and rain gauges show widespread rainfall amounts of 3-5 inches in the Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills ruing the last 48 hours, with a few locations possibly as much as 8". Rivers and streams are running very high with several reports yesterday of flooding and rock/mud slides. Compounding problems was increased run off from snow melt due to very high snow levels. Oakland and Vandenberg soundings measured the freezing level around 10,000 feet yesterday afternoon. Most of the district will get a much needed break today as upper ridging shifts the storm track farther north. But Fresno County north will still be on the southern fringe of the precipitation with Yosemite NP likely to see around another half inch of rain. Hi-res models show this area too should dry out tonight into early Thursday. But the break will be brief as an upper trough over the eastern Pacific approaches the coast for the next round of precip. Rain is expected as early as Thursday afternoon with increasing coverage and intensity Thursday evening and the heaviest Thursday night into Friday morning. This does not look as wet as the last system with 2-3 inches QPF over the Sierra/foothills, but will pose concerns as the rivers/streams are running high and the soil is already saturated. Snow levels will be very high during the bulk of the precip, starting out around 9-10K feet, then lowering to 7-8K Friday afternoon as it turns more showery behind the front. Much colder air will bring snow down to around 5000 feet Friday night into Saturday, but amounts should be generally light by that time. The San Joaquin Valley and Tehachapi mountains could see up to an inch of rain but the south end and west side of the Valley are likely to see less due to rain shadowing. The Desert areas in Kern County could see around a quarter of an inch rain. Upper ridging amplifies over the west coast Sunday into early next week for a return to dry weather for at least a few days. Once the ridge becomes established we will likely see a return to Tule Fog in the San Joaquin Valley. Medium range models are indicating more rain possible later next week, but does not look like a major storm at this time. && .AVIATION... Isolated showers Sierra Nevada north of Kings Canyon through 18z. In the San Joaquin Valley local IFR in fog through 18z otherwise mainly VFR.
