...Winter storm to continue into Wednesday morning...

.Precipitation continues across the forecast are this evening.
Warm air aloft is slowly but surely marching northward through New
Hampshire and western Maine, changing snow over to a mix with
sleet. Snow will hang on the longest over interior western Maine.
The next slug of precipitation moving in from New York state will
have some even warmer air aloft, and this is when most of the
freezing rain could fall. The duration will be relatively short
lived, so ice amounts are expected to be on the lower side.

.A wintry mix of precipitation is continuing to wind down this 
morning. Temperatures will gradually warm into the upper 30s and

A rapidly developing coastal storm will pass offshore on
Thursday, and will bring snow to the region. There is potential

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will track eastward across southern Quebec today
through Wednesday. Snow will spread into the region today,
transitioning to sleet, freezing rain and rain Tuesday night
and into Wednesday morning. Precipitation tapers off over most
areas Wednesday morning as low pressure moves east, pulling a
cold front across the area during the day Wednesday. Low
pressure passing offshore may bring another round of light snow
to the area Thursday. The coldest blast of air will follow this
system for Thursday night and Friday. Weak low pressure could
provide another round of light snow Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1654Z Update...Have updated the grids based on current
conditions and latest set of mesoscale models. Cold air
continues to bleed southward significantly in Maine with
surface temperatures running below modeled guidance in many
areas. This trend is beginning over New Hampshire as well,
despite being further from the arctic air source.

Have issued an AWW and and additional SPS for locally moderate
to heavy snowfall expanding northward into south-central NH and
southwest Maine based on current 88D imagery and mesoscale
models showing a large based of heavy precip about to cross
that region. May be up to an inch per hour in these bands.

Will likely be nudging snowfall forecasts up based on current
trends and latest model solutions. With cold scenario taking
shape, may not need significant changes to the icing forecast.
May need to upgrade some counties to winter storm warnings for
>6" of snow over portions of Maine and New Hampshire. Have held
several briefings for updates this morning.

Prev disc...
Early morning light snow which has spread across
much of the area is in response to a weak mid level wave moving
across the area. As such, the snow is being generated fairly
high up and not accumulating to a whole lot. Expect any early
morning accumulations to remain at about an inch or less.

A frontal boundary setting up over southern New England this
morning will begin spreading precipitation into southern New
Hampshire shortly after the morning rush hour and expanding
north and east from there through the day. Pressure gradient
along the frontal zone will promote easterly flow to the north
of it, but this flow will be blocked by the terrain and
channeled to a more northerly direction, pulling deep cold air
southward toward the front. Models continue to suggest a weak
surface low will develop along the front, further helping to
pull in the colder air to the north of it. Early morning
temperatures across northern Maine are below zero, with some
locations as cold as 20 below. This suggests that there is
plenty of cold air available to keep low level damming in place
until the broader scale wave moves across this evening.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
As the primary surface low moves out of the Great Lakes and
into southern Canada this evening, expect a greater push of warm
air aloft into the area. This will change precipitation type
from snow to sleet to freezing rain as it ends this evening into
early Wednesday morning. Much of the precipitation will be
occurring along and north of the low level front, so expect the
majority of precipitation to fall as snow with only light icing
expected.

Flow at all levels becomes southwesterly after midnight
allowing the cold air damming to break. Temperatures Wednesday
morning surge into the 40s and even low 50s before a strong cold
front pushes through during the day. Temperatures will be
falling during the afternoon as strong cold advection is
ongoing. Have increased the wind forecast behind the front as
well considering the strong cold advection (as much as -10C in 6
hours) which will allow a good deal of mixing to occur.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
500 mb pattern in the vicinity of North America remains active
into early next week, with weakly amplified flow, and little in
the way of blocking to start things off. Models hinting on
upstream and downstream blocking by the end of the forecast
period, but for now, temps will vary from day to day with waves
moving through every other day or so.

Weak ridging builds in briefly behind the cold front Wednesday
evening, and should allow temps fall off quickly in the evening
especially in the north, with mins ranging from around 10-15 F
to the low to mid 20s. Models continue to vacillate from run to
run regarding the wave that forms along the front offshore, and
whether it will produce any precip in the CWA. The easy part is
that it will all be snow if any precip does form. 00Z GFS and
CMC keep precip offshore, with the 00Z Euro bringing some light
snow in Thursday, and the NAM12 is super aggressive in
developing the low and bringing quite a bit of precip to the
area. Given all this, seems reasonable to keep the chance POPs
going for now, and allow the models to come into some better
agreement. Still will likely see enough clouds and persistent
N-NE flow to limit highs to the upper teens N to mid to upper
20s S, so not much improvement in temps from morning lows.

The push of the coldest air will occur behind the system as the
low winds up over the maritimes Thursday night and Friday, with
850mb temps around -25C moving thru Friday. Thursday night lows
will range from just below zero in the N to around 10 in the
south, and highs Friday will be from around 10 above to the low
20s, with a gusty N wind.

Forecast confidence begins to drop off over the weekend, as
models tracking several 500 mb waves moving thru NW flow, and
each one could provide some snow, but timing is questionable.
Look for a period of light snow sometime between Friday night
and Saturday night. A more significant wave will approach late
Sunday and could bring decent snowfall to the area Sunday night
into Monday, at least according to GFS and Euro/CMC is outlier
with just a weak wave moving through.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Short Term...
Conditions becoming IFR today as snow begins and intensifies
from south to north. Should see snow transition to freezing rain
as it ends this evening into the early morning hours Wednesday.
Visibility in the snow today should remain 1/2 mile or above for
the most part, though occasional 1/4 mile is possible. On
Wednesday expect winds to turn to the west and increase during
the afternoon behind a cold front. Gusts to 30KT are possible.

Long Term...
Mainly VFR Wednesday night, with MVFR to IFR possible in -SN
Thursday, with best chance closer to the coast. VFR expected
Thursday night to Friday night with gusty N winds on Friday.
Flight restrictions in -SN possible again on Saturday.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Expect east to northeast flow increasing today as
the pressure gradient increases along the frontal boundary.
These winds should reach gale force over the open waters and
Penobscot Bay. Winds diminish a bit tonight as a weak low moves
along the front and the front itself lifts northeast. But winds
increase again behind a cold front Wednesday afternoon with
another round of gales possible.

Long Term...
Generally a windy period is in store with at least SCA
persisting Thu-Sat. Gales are possible late Thursday night and
Friday.
