.After the slight warm up today...a reinforcing shot of cold air
will pour into northern New England overnight. Temperatures will
fall below zero again and will combine with the wind to produce
wind chill readings of 20 to 40 below zero. However...this will 
only the be the beginning of the cold...as fresh Arctic air will 
overspread the entire area on Sunday. This may even produce colder
wind chill values region wide for New Years Eve. This cold is

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will gradually build in from the west tonight
though Tuesday with continued bitterly cold temperatures.
Occasionally gusty winds will combine to make for dangerously
cold wind chill values...especially New Years Eve. A low
pressure may affect the region Thursday with some snow...before
another shot of Arctic air moves in for late week into next
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
S/WV trof spread light snow across Srn NH last hour...but that
is quickly coming to an end. In fact the ground is even visible
thru the clouds despite some continuing observations of light
snow.

Some squally snow showers may be able to sneak into SWrn zones
before scattering out this evening. Greater concern though will
be temps once again. It is mostly clear for much of the
area...with very light winds. Temps could quickly drop after
dark before the cold front arrives and wind become breezy. If
we drop quickly temps may actually rise with the arrival of the
front. Either way it will be bitter cold once again behind the
front...and wind chill warnings and advisories have been
issued/extended.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
After the briefest of respites today...a renewed shot of 20 to
25C below zero H8 air will pour into the region behind the trof
tonight. Widespread highs in the single digits above and below
zero during the day...and well below zero readings overnight.
Given the CAA we should be fairly well mixed and allow for gusty
WNW winds. Forecast sounding indicate some gusts could approach
30 kts in the afternoon. This combination will lead to extended
periods of wind chill advisory and warning criteria being met
across the area.

The brutal cold will continue into New Year's Eve...and new or
continued wind chill headlines are expected...especially with
some outdoor festivities going on. High pressure will be
building in...which makes for a tricky low temp forecast. Either
it will stay breezy and see bitter wind chills...or we manage to
decouple and see lows make a run at -30 again. I have edged low
temps towards the cooler guidance.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
*** Little Relief from the Bitter Cold with a general Snowfall
 Possible Thursday *** The deterministic model solutions are in
 good agreement on the long wave pattern through the upcoming
 weekend. The western CONUS ridge will dominate for much of the
 forecast period with a corresponding trough here in the eastern
 CONUS. There may be some light at the end of the proverbial
 tunnel as the models break down that ridge towards day ten and
 eventually the downstream trough. Until then...the door will
 remain wide open for arctic air and well below normal
 temperatures to dominate across the forecast area and New
 England. A series of impulses will cross the area at times with a
 few flurries or snow showers...otherwise it will remain the
 bitter cold that dominates the headlines this period. There'll be
 some phasing of shortwave energy between streams on Thursday that
 gives rise to a significant ocean storm. The track remains
 outside the 40N/70W benchmark and if that track holds some light
 accumulating snows are likely...confined mainly to our eastern
 Maine zones. Regardless of its eventual track...this intense
 ocean low will provide windy weather late Thursday into Friday
 and drive a reinforcing shot of arctic air into the area for
 Friday and next weekend.

.AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Short Term...Generally VFR conditions expected thru Sun night.
SN in Srn NH has dried up and/or drifted S. There might be some
scattered SHSN as the trof axis passes this evening...but
confidence is too low to include in the TAFs. Otherwise...WNWly
wind gusts around 20 kts possible Sun.

Long Term...

Thu...MVFR in -sn with areas of IFR for ME TAF sites in sn and
blsn. N sfc winds gusting to 25 kt.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Next trof and attendant cold front crosses the
waters tonight. SCA conditions return...along with freezing
spray. Conditions will continue thru the day Sun and into Sun
night. They may need to be extended beyond that. Will also have
to keep an eye on Arctic sea smoke if winds can diminish a
little early Mon. I am not convinced in calm conditions...so I
have not included any in the forecast at this time.

Long Term...
