Arctic high pressure will continue to build into the region
through the rest of the week. Expect brutally cold and often
subzero temperatures through the weekend. A trough of low
pressure will move through New England this weekend and will
bring some clouds and perhaps some light snow. Very cold
temperatures are likely to continue into next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1100 AM Update...
Quick update to tweak area temps/tds. Should see a mostly sunny
and cold afternoon across the region with a few clouds in
western zones. Winds will add insult to injury and have been
picking up across the region late this morning with most areas
seeing speeds of 10 to 20 with gusts to 30 mph. No major
changes planned to current forecast attm.

Update...
Have updated the grids based on current conditions. Temperatures
continue to drop very quickly in areas that have decoupled early
this morning. Earlier, Sanford dropped 9 degrees between 09Z and
10Z.

A very chilly start expected with this frigid airmass. Went
below most model guidance for daytime highs today. For the next
few hours, made minor adjustments to temperature, dew point and
wind forecast based on current trends and mesoscale models.

Arctic air will continue to pour into the region
this morning. Areas that are below zero and decoupled can expect
west to northwesterly breezes to redevelop as mixing levels
increase today.

Look for single numbers to be widespread for daytime highs today
over northern sections with teens along the coast. Winds will be
gusty over the higher terrain, where Wind Chill Advisories will
remain in place.

An outside flurry is possible in the hill towns early this
morning from the remains of a rare lake band reaching into
western Maine and New Hampshire (off Lake Ontario).

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
The coldest night of the year to date arrives tonight for many
areas. Gradient winds will increase, however atmospheric
sounding indicates some valley regions will attempt to
decouple. Therefore, expect a wide range in overnight lows with
most areas remain well mixed with a northwesterly breeze
continuing.

Temperatures will fall to below zero in all areas except
perhaps the beaches of coastal Rockingham county. A few
locations in the far north will be 15 below zero or even colder.
Used a blend of guidance for this forecast range of overnight
mins.

The combination of low temperatures and northwest breezes in
many locations will allow for low wind chill values to develop
in all locations. Coordinated with adjacent offices and have
expanded the wind chill advisories to all counties in an effort
to headline this hazard well ahead of time. Note that the
mountains may very well require a change in the headline to Wind
Chill Warnings as confidence increases.

Wind Chill Advisories will continue into Thursday morning and
will likely need to be expanded for the mountains as the Arctic
surface high remains west of New England. Some slight
modification to the airmass begins, however look for H8 readings
near -20C in many areas.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High amplitude ridge over the west coast of North America will
continue to drive cold air pouring downstream into the central
and eastern part of the continent all the way into the New Year.

Arctic high pressure builds east out of the Great Lakes and into
New England on Friday. The good news with this is that the winds
will begin to diminish on Friday, allowing wind chill values to
recover from their brutal levels seen during the middle of the
week. The bad news is that as the high moves overhead, that
brings better nighttime radiational cooling conditions at the
time of year when nights are at their longest. With very dry air
in place, it will be easy for some of the typical cold spots to
radiate exceptionally well so long as clouds do not form a
protective blanket. Once dewpoints are subzero the amount of
moisture left in the air is actually quite small. Thus it
doesn't take much for nighttime surface temperatures to fall
well below the daytime dewpoints, with that very little bit of
moisture left in the air easily squeezing out as frost. Thus
would not be surprised to see some valleys get as cold as 30
below zero in the right conditions. But there remains some
uncertainty about cloud cover, as it can be quite difficult
forecasting cloud cover in such cold temperatures. So for now we
have temperatures falling to 10 or 20 below zero Friday night
knowing that if skies are clear it could be even colder.

Cold core of upper level trough moves across the area on
Saturday. Models have been flirting with the idea that this
could trigger coastal low development south of New England, but
close enough to bring some light snow. The general trend the
last few days has been toward a dry forecast, but given the
upper trough moving by it seems reasonable to expect some clouds
and flurries, with the potential for accumulating snow if a more
robust low level pressure system can form. It will continue to
be cold, with highs in the single digits and teens and lows
below zero (perhaps well below zero depending on cloud cover).

Another surge of cold air moves in on Sunday behind the
departing trough, serving to reinforce the cold air that is
already in place and add the wind element to make it feel even
colder again (may need Wind Chill Advisories and Warnings
through the weekend). This air mass is not necessarily colder
than the previous, but it ensures that we will not see much
moderation in temperatures into next week.

We could see the extreme cold ease up just a bit by Tuesday as
most models show the core of the cold losing its intensity while
remaining overhead. However, with the upper flow pattern in
place, we will remain vulnerable to more cold surges coming out
of the Arctic even into the later part of next week.

.AVIATION /16Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Short Term...VFR conditions expected with gusty west to
northwesterly breezes.

Long Term...Mostly VFR conditions expected, though there may be
periods of MVFR ceilings especially in the mountains. There is a
chance for some light snow on Saturday with MVFR ceilings
possible.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Have converted the SCAs to Gales for the outer
waters beginning during the midday hours today. An increasing
gradient with very cold air over relatively warm waters should
produce 35 knot gusts into Thursday morning. SCAs to remain in
place for the bays.

Have expanded the freezing spray warning through tonight with
very cold air temperatures over the relatively warm waters.
There could be reductions in visibility due to Arctic sea smoke.
Ocean effect flurries are possible offshore.

Long Term...With very cold air in place over the area, freezing
spray will be possible through the entire forecast. Winds do
diminish on Friday and Saturday as high pressure moves overhead,
but there will be another increase in winds on Sunday behind a
reinforcing Arctic front.
