.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will pass offshore south of southern New England
today. This may spread some areas of light snow into parts of
southern New Hampshire and Maine during today. An arctic cold
front will move south out of Canada with frigid air behind it.
This cold air will be felt Saturday and Sunday when daytime
temperatures will only reach the single numbers and teens
Saturday and teens to lower 20s Sunday. High pressure becomes
centered over the area Monday. There continues to be potential
for a coastal storm to move up the northeast coast Tuesday into
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /TODAY/...
1230PM UPDATE...
Have made minor adjustments to temperature and precipitation
chances based on latest observations. Have had some reports of
snow falling in southern New Hampshire and extreme southern
Maine, but no reports of any accumulations yet.

9AM UPDATE...
Have made some adjustments to precipitation chances today based
on latest forecast thinking. Two separate waves to look at
today, one to our south which is unlikely to produce
accumulations, and another to our northwest crossing into our
area today. This one is beginning to produce light snow over
Quebec and New York and will bring some light snow through
northern and central portions of our forecast area today.
There's a chance this hooks up with an inverted trough over
southern parts of the area and produces better snowfall, but
confidence is low in this scenario.

635 AM UPDATE...
Very dry air mass in the lower levels making it difficult for
the northern fringe of snow over southern New England to move
north into southern NH/ME. Eventually enough saturation in lower
levels this morning should allow for scattered areas of light
snow over southern areas...so no change to pops on this update.
Some minor tweaks on temps based on latest mesonet data
otherwise no other changes needed at this time.

ORIGINAL DISCUSSION...
Low pressure will pass south of southern New England today. The
northern fringe of the snow shield should make it into southern
NH and extreme southern Maine. With a very dry air mass in
place any snowfall will be very light. Timing of the onset of
the snow should be in the morning and then end by later in the
day.

Later in the day as the surface low races well out to sea a
trailing inverted (NORLUN) trof hangs back and may enhance an
narrow area of snowfall for a few hours into the very early
evening hours over southern Maine and extreme southeast NH with
potential accumulations of around an inch. These are very
tricky to forecast and confidence is low so only have chance
pops associated with the feature.

Stayed close to a blend of model guidance for max temps and
timing of cold front later in the day.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT AND SATURDAY/...
The arctic air mass moves in overnight with increasing
northwest winds that become gusty. The combination of frigid
temps and gusty winds will combine to allow the need for a wind
chill advisory across northern NH and the western Maine
mountains as wind chills reach -20 to -30 degs.

On Saturday a deep upper low will be centered in the maritimes
allowing a strong gusty northwest flow of frigid air to
continue. Wind chill advisories will continue through the day
across northern NH and the mountains of Maine.

High Temps on Saturday will struggle to reach the single
numbers in the mountains while elsewhere over southern areas
high temps only reach the lower to mid teens. It will likely be
one of the coldest winter days this season. Models agree h85
temps of -25C to -30C Saturday.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The models are in decent agreement on the longwave pattern
through late next week. With a trough expected to remain largely
in place across New England...temperatures will average below
normal for the period. We begin the period with a broad upper
trough extending from the Great Lakes eastward into New England. A
quick moving impulse will dive southeast into the base of the
upper trough and cross our area late Sunday accompanied by a few
clouds and the chance for a mountain flurry. In its wake...some
weak ridging and a brief break in our active weather pattern for
Monday. However...A more potent shortwave impulse will dive
southeast into the Great Lakes by late Monday. This energy will
carve out a deep upper trough across the eastern CONUS on Tuesday
that will close off over the eastern Great Lakes/Mid Atlantic
region by early Wednesday. This closed low will then linger across
the northeast CONUS through Thursday before gradually lifting
out. In the dailies...cold cyclonic flow with a few upslope clouds
and flurries for Sunday. A ridge of high pressure brings quiet
weather to the area for Monday. A developing coastal low off the
southeast CONUS will track northward along the coast for
Tuesday...then slow down over New England Tuesday night into the
day on Wednesday in response to the evolving upper low. Models
differ significantly on the surface low track. While we'll be cold
enough for snow initially...the coastal front may spoil things
near the coast where we may go to rain for a time limiting snow
totals. In the wake of this system...we'll see clouds and a few
upslope snow showers on Thursday.

.AVIATION /14Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Short Term...VFR conditions this morning will become MVFR in
developing areas of light snow over southern areas of NH/ME
while elsewhere scattered snow showers develop ahead of the
arctic cold front that moves through later today and tonight. By
later tonight and through Saturday mainly VFR conditions except
MVFR in the mountains. Gusty northwest winds develop Saturday.
