.Cold high pressure will settle southeast across the western
Carolinas and northeast Georgia through the day today, setting 
the stage for accumulating snowfall across the region as moisture
overspreads the area tonight. Snow is expected to develop across 
the higher terrain this afternoon and then work down into the 
mountain valleys, and across the foothills and Piedmont, through 
early Sunday morning. The snowfall will gradually end through late
Sunday morning.

.SYNOPSIS...
Cold Canadian high pressure will spill into the area tomorrow. A low
pressure system will spread rain and snow across the region Saturday
night into early Sunday. Expect a brief period of dry weather Sunday
night and Monday before another systems brings a chance of a wintry
mix back to our region Monday night and Tuesday. Unusually cold
weather will persist through the next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Current obs are indicating good compressional warming in the lee of
the mtns. Max temps look on track since the previous update. The
high wind adv still looks good thru evening as KAVL is gusting to
34 kts and the higher elevs are gusting into the 50 kt range. The
better llvl thermal gradient has passed the mtns...so a gradual
decrease in gusts are expected over the next several hrs.

A cA sfc high continues to build in overnight and the p/grad will
loosen...esp across the non/mtns. This will reduce winds...but
soundings indicate a coupled sfc layer...so low-end winds are
expected overnight. A cooler airmass will continue to advect in
overnight as H925 temps drop about 12 C thru 12z. Thus...even with
some sfc winds sfc temps should drop to around freezing across the
nrn zones where llvl CAA is the greatest. The freeze watch still
looks good and have added Gaston Co based on a blend of the
the latest MOS and dynamic guidance. Mecklenburg and Cabarrus have
been left out due to lake and heat island effects....but they'll
come close. Actually some areas may drop to freezing in these
counties...but the county avg wont warrant a warning inclusion
attm.

The cooler airmass continues to build in during the day Sat and max
temps will have a hard time heating with mid/high level clouds
moving in downstream of a developing GOM low. Thus...max temps shud
be held about 10 degrees below normal. Moisture associated with the
aforementioned sfc low will reach the wrn mtns in the afternoon and
a light rain/snow mix turning to all snow will generate snow accums
arnd a half inch across the higher elevs of the nrn mtns and the wrn
Smokies thru the period.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 230 PM EST Friday: Forecast confidence is gradually improving
as the NAM, GFS, and CMC are exhibiting better agreement in the QPF
and thermal fields for the weekend event. The 12Z ECMWF remains the
most conservative on snowfall across the region, but the general
placement lines up fairly well with the other models.

For the specifics, A 500 mb shortwave will dive rapidly from the
plains states Saturday evening to the southern Appalachians Sunday
morning. Ahead of this wave, a 140 kt upper jet streak will stretch
across the Mid-Atlantic region and maximize upper divergence over
our area by daybreak Sunday. An 850 mb baroclinic zone stretched
across the forecast area will see upglide activation Saturday
evening, with isentropic lift maximizing during the overnight hours.
Meanwhile, deep moisture will develop overhead from both Gulf
moisture sources at low levels and moisture accompanying the short
wave at mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. Any brief warm
nosing at onset in the thermal profiles will wet bulb quickly to
support all snow except in the southeast half where the surface
based warm layer may be too deep for snow for most of the event.
Warm road surfaces could also eat into the accumulation potential,
especially in foothill and piedmont locations. But, improved rates
during the period of peak forcing early Sunday morning should
overcome most ground temperature issues across the snowy areas. All
told, will be upgrading the Watch to a Winter Storm Warning, adding
a tier of Winter Storm Watch to the southern NC mountains, and
posting Snow Advisories across the NC foothills and out along I-40
where accumulating snow confidence is highest. The Charlotte metro
area and Rabun County GA could well need Advisories at some point,
but will await improved confidence.

850 mb northwesterly downsloping flow should end precipitation
Sunday morning for most areas, with possible lingering weak banding
over the NC mountains. It does appear that mid level drying could
cut off ice nucleation over the mountains for some light freezing
rain/freezing drizzle at the very end of the event. However, that
appears to be a narrow window and lingering showers could loft
moisture into the ice crystal zone, so no freezing ptypes will be
mentioned. A 10 AM expiration on all WSW hazards seems fine.

A brief lull in the upper support and moisture will then occur
Sunday afternoon and Sunday night before a more prominent wave
begins to sharpen up over the central plains and digs through the
Mississippi river valley on Monday. Upglide moisture will return
from the south through the day on Monday as flow turns southerly
atop the strengthening cold air damming layer in place across the
region south of 1033 mb high pressure centered over NY/PA. The main
source of uncertainty for Monday will be how much separation occurs
between the lingering coastal/offshore waters system and the next
system approaching from the west. The ECMWF is an outlier in keeping
very little separation in the moisture between systems while the
GFS/NAM/CMC all feature good late Sunday drying and a longer lull.
Mixed ptype issues seem fairly certain as the 850 mb zero isotherm
moves north through the day, pinching any snow/sleet areas back
toward the northern Blue Ridge through late day. Any convection
should stay south and southwest of the forecast area in the warm
sector Monday as the wedge intensifies. Maxes should struggle
through the upper 30s/lower 40s given the cold air damming Monday
afternoon.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 310 PM EST Friday: Guidance in overall agreement on the
pattern during the medium range with only some small differences in
timing or placement. After a lead short wave moves across the area
Monday night and carves out an east coast trough, a deep upper low
drops into the trough from the Great Lakes on Tuesday. The GFS is a
little shallower and faster than the ECMWF, they both bring quite a
bit of forcing and very low heights across our area through
Wednesday. Heights slowly rise on Thursday as the low moves NE. Short
wave ridging moves in Friday ahead of the nest upper low moving into
the western Great Lakes.

At the surface, low pressure developing off the SC coast turns into
a noreaster and moves up the east coast as it absorbs the clipper
type low moving across the OH Valley Monday night and Tuesday. Cool
high pressure will be wedged into the area from the NE Monday night
then erodes on Tuesday as deep mixing and NW flow develops behind
the departing low. The ECMWF has quite a bit more moisture and
easterly low level flow over our area ahead of the stronger and
slower moving coastal low. This should lead to likely PoP across the
CWFA Monday night tapering off to chance PoP mountains and slight
chance elsewhere Tuesday with the drier air and deep NW flow moving
in. Thermal profiles suggest the deepest cold air will be along and
near the Blue Ridge Monday evening with deeper colder air spilling
in after midnight. This suggests a mixed bag of precip during the
evening with rain or snow after midnight. Temps warm outside of the
mountains with the strong downslope developing, changing precip to
rain, with snow remaining for the higher elevations. Breezy to windy
conditions are expected with strong low level winds moving in and
deep mixing developing.

NW flow snow showers linger across the NC mountains Tuesday night
and Wednesday with a dry forecast elsewhere. Breezy to windy
conditions continue across the area. Dry high pressure moves in
Thursday and moves east Friday as clipper type system moves into the
Great lakes and toward the area. Some precip may move into the NC
mountains late in the day, but temps will be warm enough for all
rain.

Frost/freeze concerns will continue through much of the period as
temps remain well below normal until Friday when highs warm to near
normal. The coldest day will be Wednesday and Wednesday night when
H85 temps drop to 2.5 standard deviations below normal.

.AVIATION /20Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere...VFR conds thru the period. Strong high
pressure will continue to build across the area and keep winds
aligned nw/ly. Low to moderate gusts will persist until sunset or a
couple hrs afterward. No good decoupling is seen in the soundings
overnight...so low-end nw/ly to n/ly winds should continue thru
daybreak. A meso-high is progged to build across the I-40 corridor
which will shift winds across the non/mtn sites ne/ly aft 13z. KAVL
will remain aligned nw/ly thru the period...while KHKY backs to w/ly
aft 13z.

Outlook: A passing low pressure system late Saturday thru
Sunday will bring widespread wintry precipitation to the region,
especially across the mountains, likely generating CIG and VSBY
restrictions. Another system will bring a chance of precipitation
Monday night.

Breezy winds will develop across western North Carolina this
afternoon and combine with low relative humidity values as a dry
airmass mixes in from the west. Due to low amounts of precipitation
overnight...fuel moisture levels have remained low and will
combine with atmospheric conditions to create an increased risk
of fire danger.

...FIRE DANGER STATEMENT IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EST THIS EVENING...

Breezy winds will develop across South Carolina this afternoon
and combine with low relative humidity values as a dry airmass
mixes in from the west. Due to relatively low amounts of
precipitation overnight...fuel moisture levels will dry out fairly
quickly and combine with atmospheric conditions to create an
increased risk of fire danger.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission has issued a Red Flag
Alert to discourage any outdoor burning this afternoon due to an
elevated risk of wildfires.

Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether
you can burn today. If you do burn, use extreme caution since
fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions.
