.SYNOPSIS...
A moist cold front will cross the area overnight, ushering much
cooler temps for Sunday. Precipitation associated with this front
will move east of the area by early Sunday, except for some
lingering rain and snow showers across western North Carolina into
the afternoon. Dry and cool conditions will return to the region
Monday and warm back to around seasonal normals through Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 215 PM EDT Saturday: Deep upper trough is stretched from the
Great Lakes down the MS Valley at AFD time, with attendant front
from the strongly occluded surface low just knocking on the
Appalachians' doorstep. The front will be slow to pass across the
mountains, hanging up in the higher terrain, but should push through
by or just after midnight, quickly crossing the rest of the area
through sunrise. The primary cutoff mid-level low will lift NE into
Canada, but a potent shortwave diving down the northwest flow will
continue to deepen the upper trough and is progged to cut off in the
negative tilt near the VA/NC border by the end of the period. This
will induce surface low formation over the western Carolinas at the
tail end of the front tonight, pushing offshore around the end of
the period. Meanwhile, TD 18 will lift north out of western Canada,
pushing across the southern FL Peninsula, and pushing off the
eastern FL coast, lifting NE. Operational models do some funky stuff
with the TD, including creating a secondary low over the South
Atlantic Bight, which then eventually merges with the synoptic
surface low in deep, possibly explosive cyclogenesis. This in
particular won't affect us, but the tightening surface gradient
tomorrow as a result of the strengthening low certainly will. Also,
strong deep-layer CAA will pick up in earnest behind the front. With
the shortwave screaming toward the area, weak moisture attendant
with the upper wave will push into the Southern Appalachians after
the QPF from the cold front has departed, allowing for lingering
light precip across the mountains through the end of the period.

So first up is convective potential today, which is looking
decreasingly likely with lack of surface instability. RAP barely
brings 100 J/kg across the area this afternoon/evening, but this
combined with the incredible deep-layer shear from the very dynamic
system will require monitoring through the night, but without
ability for any of the shear to reach the surface, really the worst
would likely be some gustiness underneath some of the more intense
showers. Cannot rule out a few rumbles of thunder but not really
impressed. There will be some concern with QPF across the mountains,
but rates so far have been generally light. Heavier rain is moving
into western NC here at AFD time, but storm total from now through
the end of the period is really only at most 1.5" across the
northern NC mountains, and with light rates, concern for flash flood
potential is low (though non-zero).

Behind the front, temps across the mountains drop into the lower-mid
30s tonight...and don't really rise during the day tomorrow as the
strong CAA takes over. Lingering moisture from the front plus the
additional moisture with the shortwave will allow for some NW flow
snow showers to develop during the morning, lingering during the
day. Storm total snow is pretty light, generally less than 1/2 inch,
but can't rule out isolated totals 1" or higher, especially across
the Smokies and other higher elevations along the NC/TN border.

With the aforementioned increasing pressure gradient, winds will
increase drastically as well. Speeds really pick up after midday
Sunday with sustained winds across the Piedmont easily 10-15mph,
bumping up toward 20mph during the afternoon, with some gusts easily
upwards of 30mph (if not slightly higher), especially in areas where
gap winds coming up the mountain valleys cross over the escarpment.
Mountains will of course be quite a bit higher than that, and have
posted a wind advisory starting 19z for Yancey/Mitchell/Avery, with
the high-elevation advisory (>3500ft) for the surrounding mountains.
However, if there continues to be an uptick in forecast wind speeds,
this may need to be expanded. Temperatures across the area will be a
good 15-25 degrees below seasonal normals tomorrow (greater change
across the mountains, less departure across the SW NC Piedmont, and
with the winds, just generally kind of a raw and unpleasant day
tomorrow (unless you like cold and windy conditions of course).

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 200 PM Sat: Cold continental air will continue to spill
into the CWFA Sunday night on brisk NW winds. The mtn ridges will
be exposed to 30-40 kt of midlevel flow, with the boundary layer
remaining mixed enough to bring down gusts to near 50 kt at the
peak of the event late Sunday evening. On the other hand, the cold
advection is progged to be insufficient to maintain mixing in the
lower mountain elevations and Piedmont. Thus the advisory will
maintain its extent through the night; guidance suggests gusts
will drop below advisory levels around daybreak, though for good
measure we will maintain it until 15z.

Along the Tennessee border, northwest flow driven snowfall also
will continue Sunday night. There is basically no instability,
which is a limiting factor, but deep moisture and temps nearing the
-10C level at the top of the moist layer do imply accumulation will
continue. However, the moisture is depleted by early morning. Totals
currently appear too small for a Winter Weather Advisory. The
remainder of the area should experience min temps very close
to freezing, and the cooler outlying areas of the NC Piedmont,
Upstate, and far NE GA probably will dip a degree or two below
freezing near daybreak. This should result in some frost. A Freeze
Watch or Frost Advisory could be issued tonight or tomorrow.

Thicknesses rebound somewhat rapidly Monday, and though max temps
will remain up to 10 degrees below normal, mins Monday night will
be above freezing except in the higher mtn elevations (for which
we have stopped issuing frost-freeze products this fall). Winds
shift to southwesterly and will reintroduce even warmer temps for
Tuesday; no additional precip is expected through that time, though
some shallow cumulus may sneak back in Tuesday on the return flow.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 230 PM Saturday: the medium range forecast picks up at 00z
Wednesday, with a broad upper trough spanning across the CONUS. The
axis will shift from the Great Plains to the Ohio Valley Wednesday
thru Thursday. The trough will dampen, however, so most of the
forcing will lift NE of the area. At the sfc, high pressure will
slide off the Mid-Atlantic coast while a dying cold front pushes
across the Mid-MS Valley. Southerly WAA will allow temps to warm
back to slightly above normal by Thursday, with some increase in
clouds. Guidance keeps bulk of deeper moisture and QPF to our west,
but some isolated to scattered showers may work into the NC
mountains and adjacent foothills to the east as the front
approaches.

Flow flattens to quasi-zonal across the entire CONUS by Friday, with
the GFS and ECMWF completely out of phase with next wave set up for
next weekend. The GFS is more in line with the ensemble means and
the WPC preferred progs in showing some troffing along the West
Coast and flat ridge along the East Coast. The ECMWF builds a ridge
along the Front Range of the Rockies while a trough digs across the
Great Lakes to the southern Appalachians. With flat flow aloft,
continental polar air should stay most across the northern states,
with a stalled front somewhere in the vicinity of the CWFA for
Friday and Saturday. The ECWMF has the cP air mass get further south
and activates the stationary front atop the CWFA by Saturday,
resulting in a slower uptick in PoPs, but with more QPF by end of
Saturday night. For now, I will forecast temps above normal with
increasing PoPs to solid CHC across the area for Saturday.

.AVIATION /19Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: -SHRA continuing across western areas with
MVFR to IFR cigs already moving in at KAVL. -SHRA/restrictions will
continue to spread east tonight affecting the other TAFs, with IFR
cigs forecast everywhere. Cannot rule out pockets of MVFR if rain
clears out the lower cigs, but also cannot rule out TEMPO LIFR/VLIFR
in the predawn hours, but too early to include in the TAF at this
time. -SHRA will diminish and lift north in the pre-dawn hours, but
cigs/vsby restrictions will hang around for all but KAND past
sunrise. The front will push through the mountains tonight and will
be east of the area just after sunrise, with S winds veering around
to NW (current timing at KCLT 11-12z) and increasing with gusts
between 20-30kt (higher end for KAVL) by the end of the period.
Winds may likely increase additionally just behind the end of the
period.

Outlook: Breezy conditions will bring gradual drying throughout
Sunday, with the dry weather persisting into mid-week.
