.SYNOPSIS...
The remnants of Hurricane Nate will move northward through the
southeast, traveling up the western slopes of the Appalachians late
this weekend. Deep moisture and heavy rainfall will spread across
the region on Sunday and Monday. Scattered showers and storms may
linger through next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 2:30pm EDT Saturday:

Main weather maker for the next couple days will be TC Nate, with a
fairly accurate path expected west of the Appalachians.  With the
Appalachians and nearby areas in the right-front quadrant of Nate,
some impacts from wind and heavy precipitation are expected.

Prior to the passage of Nate, the current regime the area has been
under with light northeasterly wedge flow, will end with low-level
winds beoming southeasterly ahead of Nate tonight.  Current
scattered showers have been occurring with southeasterly flow along
the coast moving some moisture into the wedge flow area.  Model
guidance has some diurnal reduction in these showers this evening
with precipitaiton increasing again with upslope enhancement over
the mountains later tonight and early Monday morning.  Main slug of
precipitation occurs Sunday evening as nate approaches.

Due to extensive cloudiness and rain, there is a subued diurnal
range in temperatures with lows and highs about 10 degrees apart,
and 5 to 10 degrees above normal for highs and 20 degrees above
normal for lows.

Very strong low-level shear with the passage of Nate will give some
chance for brief high-shear tornadoes.  Lates GFS has 0-1km shear of
40 to 45kts Sunday night; however, this is also the time of diurnal
minimum instability, with MLCAPE down below 200 j/kg.  Situation
will bear watching, but this is probably not a big threat at this
time.

Winds increase from the west Sunday night, with the strongest winds
expected at high elevations and ridge tops.  Wind gusts approaching
50kts at the higher elevations in some places should be sufficient
to produce some tree falls, hence the need for wind headlines
beginning 2pm on Sunday.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 245 PM EDT: The TC Nate remnants will lift northward across
the deep South into south-central Tennessee by the beginning of the
short term period early Sunday evening. This will herald the onset of
the most intense period of high Appalachians winds and heavy
rainfall in the southerly/southeasterly upslope areas. We now expect
a relatively narrow window of focus of the most intense hazards to
occur late Sunday through early Monday and headlines will be
featured accordingly.

First regarding winds, an 850 mb jet of 45 to 50 kt will expand
around the weakening tropical circulation and traverse the NC
mountains quickly from 00Z to 12Z Monday. A High Wind Watch will be
posted for the extreme southern Appalachians, with an area of solid
Advisory winds surrounding across the central/northern mountains and
and eastern slopes. The higher ridges will certainly see the best
potential for damaging gusts, but heavy showers could mix the winds
down into the mountain valleys, and quickly saturating soils could
enhance downed trees in the far southern mountains.

We enter this event with very, very dry antecedent conditions, so
will be cautious to post Flash Flood Watches at this point. Model
QPF totals have come down a bit from previous runs, but with solid 5
or 7 inch amounts still likely in the upslope areas, and localized
enhancements possibly of 8+ inches a few spots. Precipitable water
values will likely run 2 to 2.25 inches Sunday night, but FFG values
are quite high with 3 hour values 3 to 4 inches in the most upslope
prone counties and generally 4+ east of the mountains. The
inclination will be to keep FFA areas quite small, confined mainly
to the southern mountains in light of river forecasts and local
upslope enhancement there.

Finally, the best period of strong low level shear in the right
front quadrant of the system will exist from late Sunday to the
early overnight hours. Areas of high Tropical Cyclone Tornado
Paramter (TCTP) values will develop primarily over the foothills
Sunday night. This parameter is tuned to the tropical tornado
threat, but instability east of the mountains remains questionable
and the high terrain should disrupt thunderstorm inflow over the
mountains.

The system will lift quickly north of the region up the Appalachian
chain by daybreak Monday. Abundant low and mid-level moisture will
persist in the lingering southwesterly flow Monday through Tuesday
with above climo PoPs continuing for showers and scattered
thunderstorms. Temperatures will rebound above climo as well.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 225 PM EDT Saturday: Center of the upper ridge near the
Carolina coast at the start of the period slowly retrogrades across
the SE CONUS to the lower MS valley by the end of the period.
Ridging remains in place across the SE through this time. An upper
low over the mid MS valley at the start of the period opens up and
moves around the periphery of the ridge and across the Great Lakes
and off the NE coast by Thursday. Deep moisture remains across the
area Wednesday ahead of a cold front moving into the area from the
west. The front lingers just south of the area Thursday with
moisture slowly diminishing. The front moves well south of the area
Friday as dry and cooler high pressure builds in from the NE and
holds on through Saturday. The result of all this is low end likely
to high chance PoP on Wednesday with chance range PoP for Thursday.
With some lingering low level moisture in the developing easterly
flow on Friday, isolated light showers may linger. Dry forecast for
Saturday. Highs Wednesday around 5 degrees above normal drop to a
couple above for Thursday, near normal Friday, then back to around 5
above normal for Saturday. Lows start out around 15 degrees above
normal falling to 5 to 10 above normal by the end of the period.

.AVIATION /19Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere:  Maion impacts from TC Nate will generally
come-in past the TAF period, though southeast winds will begin
increasing along the GA/SC border around 18Z Sunday.  As wedge
regime breaks down this afternoon, surface winds will turn from
northeasterly to southeasterly at around 5 to 10 kts.  This will
increase moisture along with cloudiness and the chances for
showers.  Latest guidance has scattered showers today, with
increasing chances for thundershowers tomorrow.  Increased
cloudiness and periods of rain will steadily reduce visibility and
CIGs through tonight and Sunday with widespread IFR conditions for
CIGs expected by tonight.

Outlook: Deep subtropical moisture associated with TS Nate will
persist over the area through Monday, with a weak frontal zone
likely to linger over the region into Tuesday. Periodic restrictions
and SHRA/TSRA likely will result.
