.SYNOPSIS...
Dry high pressure will stay over the Northeast States as Irma
crosses Florida on its way to Georgia on Monday.  Wind and rain will
increase across our region as the tropical system approaches from
the south.  The remnants of Irma may move west and stall on
Wednesday, then shift back east over the mountains aided by an
incoming cold front.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 3pm EDT Sunday: Radar is clear this afternoon as some high
cirrus spreads over the area.  Cirrus is distantly related to
hurricane Irma which will move northward along Florida today and
begin to more directly impact weather in the GSP CWA early Monday
morning.

Current northeasterly flow around northeast CONUS surface high with
cold-air damming has been enhanced due to increased pressure
gradient with strong low of Irma to the south.  Winds may slacken
some diurnally after dark, but gradient and 850mb winds will
continue to increase as Irma makes her way north.  Winds are
expected to be strong enough to justify a high-wind warning or
advisory for all of the CWA, especially considering duration of
event and combination with heavy rainfall that will loosen trees.
Winds will be stronger to the west, with some very strong gusts
possible at ridge tops, which will be closer to the 60kts 850mb winds.

Irma will pass well west of the CWA, but has a very long reach with
some impacts over the entire southeast CONUS.  Initial rain enters
the CWA from the south early Monday morning, spreading over the
entire CWA by late morning. Total rainfall through Tuesday will run
around 2 to 3 inches in most places, with more to the west and in
the mountains with easterly wind upslope enhancement.  There will be
occasional thunder, especially in the furthest south zones Monday
afternoon, but SB- and ML-CAPE are mostly too weak to support
vigorous updrafts.  Latest CAMs show strong updrafts entering the
CWA from the south late Monday evening as warmfront around Irma
lifts northward across the area.  Very strong low-level shear
suggests some potential for low-CAPE tornadoes, but cold surface air
argues against it.  Best chance for any brief tornadoes will be
along and south of the warm front late on Monday.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 225 PM Sunday: Peak windy and rainy conditions should be
pretty much ongoing at the start of the short term, by which time
the center of Irma is expected to be approaching the ATL metro area
as a minimal tropical storm. The strongest axis of low level
confluence northeast of the center, along with retreating surface
boundary should focus a band of heavy rain rotating through the area
tomorrow evening. After midnight-ish, the heavier rain should become
focused along the eastern and southeastern escarpment of the Blue
Ridge, with 60-70 kt easterly flow above the surface supporting
strong upslope lift. By Sunrise Tue, total rainfall is expected to
range from around 1.5 inches across the northwest NC Piedmont to
around 4 inches across the upper Savannah River Valley and the Blue
Ridge escarpment, with locally higher amounts possible near the
escarpment. In terms of the current Flash Flood Watch, suspect the
usual flood prone areas of Transylvania/Henderson counties up
through western McDowell will start to see issues by the time the
rain tapers off Tue morning, and the watch has been expanded
northeast along the Blue Ridge to accommodate those areas.

In terms of the wind, we continue to forecast technically
sub-warning level gusts (that does not mean that occasional gusts as
high as 60 mph will be possible!) However, as soils begin to
saturate, the expected 40-50 mph gusts across the western Upstate/
northeast GA/southern NC mtns should be more than enough to cause
plenty of downed trees and at least scattered power outages. If the
High Wind Warning were to be expanded, it would be most likely
across at least part of the remaining mtn zones. 60-70 mph wind
gusts will be likely on the exposed peaks and ridge tops, but the
valleys should be more or less sheltered from the stronger winds.
The caveat here is that some of the more intense showers could mix
down occasional 50-60 mph winds into the valleys Monday evening. We
feel okay about going with an advisory in those areas for now, but
an upgrade will need to be considered tomorrow.

In terms of the tornado threat, the threat may actually increase
through the evening hours and early part of the overnight, as
mid-level dry slot begins rotating into the area and northward
retreat of the boundary exposes some weak sbCAPE to go along with
~400 SRH/40 kts of 0-1km shear (just a reminder that northeast
quadrant mid-level RH gradients are favored locations for
tornadoes.) This isn't the greatest TC tornado set up, but certainly
a non-zero threat exists for a couple of brief spin-ups.

Conditions will gradually improve through Tue morning, but a
continues moist SE upslope flow should support showers as late as
the afternoon hours, but the show should mostly be over but for the
cleanup by noon Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 100 PM EDT Sunday: Little has changed since previous shift for
the period 12Z Wed through the weekend. Scattered showers will be
possible across much or all of the CWA Wednesday through at least
Friday as the remnants of Irma gradually shift from western TN to
the northeastern U.S. Certainly looking at greater uncertainty for
the weekend as models disagree on the handling of an upper trough
possibly moving across southern Canada and the Great Lakes, and
Hurricane Jose. We will need to watch these features closely
over the coming days.

Temperatures will be 5-8 degrees below normal from Wednesday through
Friday, then will become near normal over the weekend.

.AVIATION /19Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere:  Area will be on the outer region the
tropical system Irma on Monday with winds increasing from the
northeast after 6Z and steady light to moderate rain after 12Z for
the duration of the TAF period.  850mb flow will be easterly 50 to
70 kts on Monday which will give strong gust and some windshear
potential.  Currently, winds and gusts have begun to increase with
some decrease expected after sunset before more significant
northeasterly winds pick-up early Monday morning with generally 15
to 20kts of wind with gusts to 30kts.  The Anderson aerodrome is
closer to the tropical system and will have the strongest winds with
gusts to 40kts.  Additionally, tropical airmass and steady light to
moderate rain will result in IFR to LIFR CIGs and reduced visibility.

Outlook: The effects of Irma will reach their peak Monday afternoon
and night. Even though sustained cyclone winds in the western
Carolinas may be too weak to cause widespread damage, periods of
+RA/TSRA can be expected at all terminals. Additional impacts could
include areas of LLWS, and even a few tornadoes embedded in the rain
bands.
