Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Drier and cooler air will continue to spread across the region today
bringing the possibility of frosty conditions again on Thursday
morning. Dry conditions are expected to persist through the
remainder of the work week before another cold front moves into the
area over the weekend.  This front is expected to increase chances
for precipitation Saturday and into Sunday, with modest cooling and
drying expected behind the front to start next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 255 AM EDT: A highly amplified upper trough stretches from the
eastern Great Lakes to the southern Appalachians early this morning.
Moisture remains rather limited in profiles under the trough axis,
but there is enough RH in the 850 to 700 mb layer to produce some
scattered mountain stratocumulus at 6 to 8 kft. This is not expected
to have a major impact on early morning temps and the current freeze
warning looks well placed, with the frost advisory having a chance
to verify if winds decouple late. Lapse rates will increase a bit
under the passing trough axis through late day, but with PoPs never
rising to more than slight chance in the northern and western
mountains. Meanwhile, westerly downsloping will generally keep
conditions dry east of the mountains. Maxes should run 5 to 10
degrees below climo outside the mountains, and 10 to 15 below climo
in the mountains.

The upper trough axis will move east of the area tonight, with deep
layer NW flow setting up overnight. Thicknesses will be colder, but
one fly in the ointment for the frost/freeze forecast tonight will
be better mid level moisture moving through the region on the NW
flow aloft. Another issue will be the improving NW flow gradient
that might bring a little wind back into the picture. However, the
surface pressure gradient should relax a bit overnight. Given the
cold thicknesses, a mountain Freeze Warning with an adjacent tier of
Frost Advisory seems prudent. Also, cannot rule out some isolated
snow showers mixing in over the high terrain tonight, but little to
no accumulations are expected.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 200 AM EDT Wednesday:  The short term fcst initializes on
Thursday morning amidst a departing H5 trof axis, and thus rising
heights aloft as ridging noses in from the west.  At the surface,
cool/dry high pressure will be in place across the southern Apps
initially leading to a rather cool and frosty start to the day
Thursday.  As the pattern evolves the upper and sfc ridges will
shift east/northeast centered atop the Outer Banks of NC by Friday
morning.  Meanwhile to the west a large full latitude upper trof
will be diving sharply south out of Canada across the Rockies/Plains
with a region of surface cyclogenesis atop the upper Midwest pushing
a cold front toward the MS river valley.  The front will march
through the MS valley into the OH/TN valleys by Saturday morning,
all while surface temperatures and moisture attempt to recover ahead
of the fropa across ne GA and the western Carolinas.  This weak
moisture advection will warrant increasing pops overnight into
Saturday morning given the frontal proximity as well as improved
moist llv flow into the high terrain where upsloping effects are
favored.  Therefore for the fcst, dry Thursday and Friday with the
above mentioned pops trends favored for the overnight into Saturday.
 Temperatures on Thursday will remain nearly 1-2 cats below normal,
warming to near normal for Friday.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 230 AM EDT Wednesday:  The medium range fcst period kicks off
on Saturday morning amidst a highly amplified upper pattern
highlighted by a deep full latitude trof across the central CONUS,
while a sharp ridge axis is forced out to sea across the western
Atl.  At the surface, a cold/dry Canadian airmass will be consuming
much the region beneath the upper trof while a cold front slides
east across the OH/TN Valleys with high pressure in retreat east of
the Apps.  Guidance is now in good agreement with regards to the
timing of any pre frontal precip, as well as the fropa itself with
both the GFS/ECMWF favoring moisture advection across GA and the
Carolinas early on Saturday morning leading to light showers and
thus low end pops.  From that point forward the front looks to push
into the region late on Saturday afternoon, moving through the cwfa
in the evening/overnight hours.  Models do hint at wave development
along the front, traversing across the Carolinas during the early
morning hours Sunday which could enhance llv flow.  With that,
profiles dont look particularly unstable by way of the nocturnal
timing, however with the dynamics at play, wouldn't be suprised if a
few strong storms with heavy rainfall presented themselves.  The
front looks to clear the fcst area by midday Sunday with residual
nwf moisture banked against the western slopes of the Apps leading
to ra/sn showers, which could persist into Monday morning yielding
the first measurable nwfs event of the winter season.  Otherwise,
the upper trof will traverse the eastern CONUS through Monday with
dry/cold high pressure dominating into midweek.  As for the fcst
itself, healthy likely/categorical pops are included on Saturday
night into Sunday as the fropa occurs, tapering from the west to
below mentionable levels by Sunday evening, with the exception of
the noted high terrain nwfs showers and thus slight chance pops. The
entire region has a dry fcst from Monday morning onward.
Temperatures will initialize just a few degrees below normal on
Saturday, cooling through Sunday/Monday to nearly 10-12 degrees
below normal, then warming slightly for Tuesday.
