.SYNOPSIS...
Temperatures will be much below normal into the start of the
weekend, then milder temperatures return into the first half of next
week under dry high pressure. The next front may move in during the
middle part of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 230 PM EDT Friday: Another spoke of vorticity is rotating
through the deep upper trough aligned along the Eastern Seaboard.
This will quickly exit to our east this evening, and should clear
out most of the cloud cover. At the surface, an axis of high
pressure will shift east across the Ohio and Tennessee valleys,
reaching the western slopes of the southern Appalachians by daybreak
Saturday. Winds should gradually diminish, but with the high to our
west, it does look like things will completely decouple until
perhaps right before dawn. The model upper level RH forecast also
hints at orographic cirrus developing late tonight. If that happens,
it may prevent temps from dipping as cold as previously thought. The
combination of the uncertainty in winds and clouds thru the
overnight keeps me from undercutting the MOS min temps, which are
just above freezing in the watch area. So I will convert the watch
to a Frost Advisory (even though it's not ideal for frost either).
Min temps expected to be in the 20s to lower 30s in the mountains and
mid 30s to around 40 in the piedmont.

On Saturday, the surface high will slide over the area under
northwesterly flow aloft. So a very pleasant day is expected across
the area, with light winds and sunny skies. Highs mainly in the 60s
to around 70 (about 3-5 degrees below normal).

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 230 PM EDT: The large upper low which has been a player in our
weather earlier in the week, will continue to shift off to the east
this weekend and into early next week. This will allow a progressive
ridge to move from the middle sections of the CONUS and gradually
settle into our forecast area (FA).

As a result dry weather conditions are expected right from the start
of this forecast cycle into Monday.

Big picture, We have followed a blend of temperatures through the
period. However with high pressure settling over the region Saturday
night it appears very good radiational conditions will prevail.
Therefore we have gone below guidance, and mentioned patchy frost in
some of our northern foothill, and northern piedmont counties, both
in western North Carolina

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 220 PM EDT Friday:  A stubborn ridge will hold on along the
southeast coastline Tuesday, while shortwaves deamplify as they
approach the southern Appalachians in the deep layer southwesterly
flow. Lower levels will slowly moisten up through Tuesday as a light
southerly return flow develops, but triggers for any weak convection
will be very hard to find.

A stronger shortwave will move from the mid MS valley to the
southern Appalachians Wednesday. Mainly isolated to scattered
diurnal convection will develop on Wednesday afternoon and evening.
West to northwest flow will then set up on Thursday as a cold front
moves southeast through the OH valley and mid-Atlantic region. There
is some uncertainty over how quickly the boundary will move south
through our region, with the faster ECMWF showing Thursday and
slower GFS indicating Friday. Certainly, the the backdoor fropa
should pass through by at least Friday, with ridging returning from
the north. Will continue to feature mainly isolated to scattered
PoPs with fropa for most areas given the narrow band of any deeper
moisture. Max temps will run 5 to 10 degrees above climo through the
period, perhaps a touch cooler on Friday with the backdoor fropa.

.AVIATION /19Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
At KCLT and Elsewhere: VFR conditions expected thru the period at
all sites, as dry high pressure gradually builds in from the west.
The main concern will be winds, which will remain gusty out of the
WSW to WNW across the Piedmont, and NW at KAVL until around 00z this
evening. Winds will linger a little longer at KAVL this evening, but
should lose gustiness overnight. Otherwise, there will be a few
VFR-level cumulus around this afternoon under a thick cirrus shield
moving in from the north. These clouds should dissipate by early
evening, but more cirrus may develop due to a mountain wave late
tonight. Frosty conditions will be possible at KCLT, as temps fall
into the mid-upper 30s by daybreak.

Outlook: The weekend should be dry with sfc high pressure sliding
back over the region. VFR conditions should last into early next
week. The high will slide east of the area, allowing flow to bring
moisture back into the region by midweek, ahead of a cold front
approaching from the northwest.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Strong west to northwest winds will continue across the area before
diminishing through afternoon. Meanwhile, relative humidity values
will drop into the upper 20s to lower 30s, but should remain above
critical values. The combination of the drying and windy conditions
will lead to dropping fuel moisture values. The fuel moisture values
will be quite variable given the recent rainfall and the mountain
snow. After coordination with area land managers, a Fire Danger
Statement is in effect for NC until 8 PM this evening.

On Saturday, winds will be much lighter, but relative humidity will
dip lower with values into the lower to middle 20s across most of
the area. Coordination with land managers for any Fire Danger
Statements may be needed, if they feel fuels have dried enough.
