.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 329 PM EST Wed Dec 27 2017

Winter will continue in full swing as we head through the
remainder of the week and into the weekend. Cold air will maintain
is grip on the area with temperatures likely remaining at or below
20F much of the next week. Lake effect snows will continue to pour
off of Lake Michigan, with heavy snow expected up towards Big and
Little Sable Points Thursday into Friday. The Thursday evening
commute north of Grand Haven along U.S. Highway 31 will likely
contain whiteout conditions at times.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night)
Issued at 329 PM EST Wed Dec 27 2017

Main concern in the short term is on a southwest flow lake
enhanced event expected in the Thursday afternoon through midday
Friday time frame. Have opted to issue a Winter Storm Warning for
Muskegon, Oceana and Mason counties and a Winter Weather Advisory
for Ottawa, Newaygo and Lake counties. Expecting 6-10 inch
accumulations in the warning counties, much of that occuring in a
12 hour period from about 400pm Thursday through 400am Friday.
Cannot rule out higher amounts in these counties as well, up
towards a foot from Whitehall north through Pentwater to
Ludington. 3 to 6 inch amounts are expected in the advisory
counties with locally higher amounts there as well.

Steady state lake effect snow showers this evening will migrate
closer to the shoreline and eventually move off shore as a land
breeze develops. Some light accumulations will continue in the
lakeshore counties this evening.

During the day on Thursday the flow will begin to shift south and
southwest with time. As this is occurring some light snow will
spread into the area from the west associated with a weak trough
of low pressure. The synoptic snow will give a boost to the
ongoing snow band as it begins to move ashore near and north of
Muskegon. BUFKIT profiles show a very healthy crosshairs signature
with strong lift centered in the DGZ. Moisture depth is well over
10,000ft during the height of the event which will be from Friday
afternoon through Friday evening. Anticipate 1 to 2 inch per hour
snows as this band moves inland for at least several hours. These
are the type of snow bands that produce widespread 1/4 mile
visibilities within the band. Given air temps that will remain
very cold, travel will be hazardous due to salt being ineffective,
not to mention the very limited visibility. Again, expecting
accumulations of around 8 inches in portions of the warning
counties especially from Whitehall north to Ludington.

Lake effect snow will continue through the remainder of the short
term both Friday afternoon and Friday night. The flow will be
shifting to more of a northwesterly direction, so snow is
expected across much of Western Lower Michigan as the bands
reorientate. The focus Friday night though will be in the corners
of the CWA towards Ludington and Baldwin and down towards South
Haven. Additional accumulations are likely.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Wednesday)

Below normal temperatures will continue to be the primary weather
headline from this weekend through at least the middle of next week.
Medium range models are in fairly good agreement (internally and
with each other) with the synoptic pattern: Series of waves will
rotate around persistent upper low over Ontario through the period.
Another arctic surface high will ooze into the Central Plains over
the weekend...ushering in more bitterly cold air. The high center
will move into the Ohio Valley region Tuesday...briefly allowing for
a southerly wind and slightly warmer temperatures. Another blast of
cold air will return later Wednesday and continue through the end of
next week.

Highs will reach the teens at best each day...with lows around zero.
Wind chill readings could fall into the -15 to -20 range in the US
127 corridor on several mornings.

Inverted surface trough will be moving through the region Saturday
which should produce the best chance of widespread snow throughout
the extended forecast period.  After 00Z Sunday... precipitation
chances will be closely tied to onshore flow and lake effect.
Highest precipitation chances will be along and west of US 131
throughout the period.  Models hint at another synoptic type event
Wednesday into Thursday.

Banded snow was indicated by the 88D along the Lake Michigan
shoreline early this afternoon. Satellite imagery showed a
decrease in cloud cover across interior sections of West Michigan
since this morning.

Mesoscale models (including the HREF) show an increase in
snow/cloudsfrom KMKG east to KGRR/KAZO/KBTL this afternoon before
precipitation chances diminish this evening. The best chances for
snow/low clouds will be at KMKG...with chances diminishing as you
move east.

Improved conditions are then expected late this evening through
Thursday morning...when moisture will move into the region from
the southwest. Some indications that low clouds could develop in
interior sections toward sunrise...but confidence is low and this
situation will need to be monitored.

Rivers are mostly ice covered and some minor fluctuations in river
levels are being reported. A river advisory has been issued at
Smyrna on the Flat River, where an ice jam is thought to have formed
downriver of the site. Only minor flooding is expected. Temperatures
are expected to remain below 20 degrees for at least the next week,
so little change should occur in the short term.
