Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Grand Junction CO 1122 PM MST Fri Mar 3 2017 .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Saturday night) Issued at 400 PM MST Fri Mar 3 2017 The shallow high pressure ridge over the forecast area will be driven east of the region tonight by the trough digging southward along the coast of British Columbia. Thin cirrus in southwest flow aloft will continue to sweep over northeast Utah and northwest Colorado. Models were split on whether high clouds will spread into the south later tonight. Weak warm air advection is expected to cause overnight lows to moderate slightly. Southwest flow picks up a bit on Saturday/Saturday night as the low off the Pacific Northwest continues to dig southward. Except for thin cirrus, dry, breezy and mild conditions will continue across the forecast area with temperatures rising well above normal. MAV MOS has performed poorly relative to the MET guidance of late so will steer highs toward the warmer MET Saturday afternoon. However, the dry air in the atmospheric column points to a more modest rise in overnight lows Saturday night. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 400 PM MST Fri Mar 3 2017 The trough system over the West Coast moves ashore on Sunday driving its associated cold front across northwest Utah. The strengthening gradient ahead of the trough will generate windy conditions, especially across northeast Utah and northwest Colorado where 7H winds rise to near 50 kts. Do not believe these winds will reach warning criteria, but there is the potential for advisory level gusts. EC and GFS indicated light showers breaking out over the eastern Uinta Mountains and Colorado's southern and central ranges during the day, but suspect this may be a bit overdone. In any event it's doubtful much moisture will reach the ground. Despite increased clouds and showers, believe temperatures will be much warmer than normal given level of mixing expected, and certainly higher than MAV MOS guidance numbers. Consequently, boosted temperatures to levels of around 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Models were fairly consistent in driving the cold front across the forecast area Sunday night causing snow levels to lower to valley floors by morning. Models indicated that moisture and lift peak during the night causing precipitation to expand in coverage becoming likely for most mountain areas Sunday night and continuing into Monday. The northwest Colorado mountains and valleys are favored during this period and latest models point to an advisory level snow and blowing snow event. Details still emerging, but accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible with locally higher amounts. Meanwhile, temperatures will be much colder on Monday with highs roughly 15 degrees cooler than Sunday on average. Snow is expected linger across the northwest mountains Monday night into Tuesday morning while quieter conditions prevail elsewhere. ECMWF and GFS both indicated dry conditions will prevail during much of the remainder of the week. However the GFS solution was more zonal, eventually bringing a chance for showers to the north next Friday. In contrast, the EC kept flow coming from the northwest with a weak wave brushing the Elkhead and Park ranges Thursday night. Given model differences, did not attempt to add any detail in the later periods. As for temperatures, expect a gradual warmup during the latter part of the week with highs climbing above normal by Wednesday afternoon. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night) Issued at 1118 PM MST Fri Mar 3 2017 The VFR conditions will prevail the next 24 hours.
