.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 344 AM CST Sat Mar 4 2017

The main forecast concern today is dangerous fire weather
conditions.

The surface low will deepen and move eastward along the
Kansas/Nebraska border. Temperatures will be well above normal,
nearly 30+ degrees in some areas. Highs will be in the upper 60s
and low 70s. A dryline will push eastward and tighten up,
especially in the evening and overnight. The dryline will bisect
the forecast area tonight, so a fairly significant gradient will
be present for overnight lows. Lows will range from the low 30s
from Ord to Lexington to the upper 40s from Hebron to Beloit.

Dry fuels combined with breezy south winds and dry air
will cause near critical fire conditions across most of the area,
with the lowest RH values and strongest winds combining across
southern Nebraska and north central Kansas to cause critical fire

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 344 AM CST Sat Mar 4 2017

Dry conditions remain in the forecast for the latter half of the
weekend, with models in good agreement showing southwesterly flow in
place in the upper levels, as the Plains sit between ridging
extending north from the Gulf of Mexico and an area of low pressure
moving into the Pac NW. At the surface, overall not expecting a lot
of change from Saturday. The CWA will once again be affected by a
tightening pressure gradient, resulting in another round of gusty
southerly winds. Roughly the southeastern half to 2/3rds of the CWA
will have the strongest winds, where the tightest sfc pressure
gradient and stronger winds aloft are expected to line up. Speeds of
20-25 MPH will again be possible in that southeastern area, along
with gusts near 30-35 MPH. Models continue to show warming temps
aloft building east into the area, with 850mb temps in the lower/mid
teens. Forecast high temperatures are currently in the lower/mid
70s, and look to fall short of record highs (see climate section
below). Increased lower level moisture is shown by models to advect
north with the southerly flow, with dewpoints climbing into the
lower 30s west to mid 40s west. As far as fire wx concerns go, while
the stronger winds are across the southeastern portions of the CWA,
the lowest dewpoints/RH values are in the west, so things aren't
lining up quite right for critical values at this point. Will keep a
mention of near critical conditions going in the HWO and see how
models trend, esp for those western counties.

Sunday night into Monday morning, models are in good agreement
showing the development of a strong southwesterly LLJ, mainly over
the eastern half of NE/KS, along with increasing lift ahead of the
approaching trough axis. Lower level moisture continues to be drawn
north, and a few models show the development of some light
qpf/drizzle. The more aggressive signal comes from the NAM, but the
depth of moisture from other models isn't as deep/as close to the
sfc, suggesting it may end up being more stratus than anything.
Other models keep things more just off to the east. At this point,
kept any mention of precip out of the forecast, but do have
increased sky cover, esp in the east.

Monday and Tuesday are the big days in terms of fire weather
concerns. The dry forecast continues. In the upper levels, the upper
level trough, driven by low pressure sliding along the US/Can
border, continues pushing east onto the Plains, passing through the
region late Monday into Monday night. More northwesterly flow sets
up for Tuesday. At this point the forecast remains dry, but chances
for precipitation aren't far out of the northern and eastern
portions of the CWA, so confidence in that dry forecast (mainly for
Monday daytime) isn't the highest. This system will push a surface
cold front through the area, ushering in strong westerly winds for
Monday, with a reinforcing shot of northwesterly winds for Tuesday.
Sustained speeds over 30 MPH looking possible for a good chunk of
the CWA on Monday, slightly lower speeds for Tuesday. Temperatures
for Monday are tricky due to a daytime frontal passage, with highs
ranging from the lower 60s in the northwest to lower 70s in the
southeast, with 50s going for Tuesday. Even with these differing
temps Mon/Tues, the drier air mass and lower dewpoints expected to
build in to the area look to result in RH values below 20%. Fire
weather headlines are looking likely for both days, for most/if not
all of the CWA.

For the remainder of the period, Wed through Sat, the forecast
remains dry, though confidence toward the end of the period lowers.
Models are in good agreement showing upper level northwesterly flow
setting up across the region in the wake of the Mon/Tue system,
turning more zonal for Fri/Sat as another piece of shortwave energy
approaches. Some differences between models with exactly how much of
an impact this system will have on the CWA, possible PoPs may end up
being added to the forecast. Will see how things trend. Temperatures
expected to rebound some for Wed/Thurs into the 60s, before another
slight cool down for Fri/Sat.

will generally be clear through much of the forecast with mid-high
clouds moving in towards the evening. Light winds will become
southerly during the day and breezy. Low level wind shear is a
concern after 00z Sunday.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Today:
Fire weather is a concern today across areas along and
south of Highway 136 in southern Nebraska. The combination of low
relative humidities and breezy southerly winds will create
critical fire conditions. A red flag warning has been issued for
these effected areas. Drier air will be present across much of the
area as a dryline sets up and the gradient tightens through the
next 24 hours. Breezy south winds are present across much of the
area. Near critical fire conditions will be present across most of
the remaining areas of south central Nebraska.

Sunday - Tuesday:
As mentioned above, Monday and Tuesday are the
primary days of concern for widespread fire weather issues. For
Sunday, the stronger winds are expected to set up across roughly
the southeastern half of the CWA, but the lower RH values look to
be across the west. A fire weather headline for Sunday is not out
of the question for a few counties in the far west, but confidence
is too low to go with any at this point. Monday/Tuesday, strong
west-northwest winds are expected to develop behind a passing cold
front, with a notably drier air mass. Sustained speeds over 30
MPH will be possible for many spots on Monday, with Tuesday
looking to be more in the 20-25 MPH range. RH values both days are
currently forecast to fall to near/below 20%. Still some time to
tweak forecast elements, but fire weather headlines are looking
more likely for both days.

Critical Fire Danger is present across north central Kansas and
along and south of Highway 136 in Nebraska. Near Critical Fire
Danger is present across the remainder of the area. Low RH values
and breezy winds could cause any fire that develops to become out
of control quickly.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday.

Near critical to critical fire weather conditions are possible
across at least portions of the outlook area Sunday through Tuesday.
The worst and most widespread critical fire weather conditions
are anticipated Monday and Tuesday.

Monday afternoon, strong west to northwest winds are expected across
the outlook area. Speeds near 30 MPH are expected for many
locations, with gusts near 40 MPH possible.
