.DISCUSSION...

930pm Update: As the forecast is on track, no updates are needed
with this update.  Hickford

Evening Update (630pm MST): This update was mainly focused on
updating forecast snowfall amounts and headlines. Expected totals
continue to creep upwards, with most of Petroleum County,
including Winnett, expected to see 12 to 13 inches of snow through
Saturday afternoon. With total snowfall across much of southern
and central Phillips County now expected to be 10 to 12 inches,
chose to upgrade to a Winter Storm Warning across those areas. So
now the Winter Storm Warning includes Petroleum, Garfield, and
most of Phillips Counties. This does include US 191 between Malta
and headed down to Billings, which is expected to receive up to 13
or 14 inches of snow and will likely be impassable. Travel on Highway
200 from Jordan west will also be very dangerous during this time.

Afternoon Update (2pm MST): Majority of the update was to the
precipitation potential/amounts and adjusting headlines for the
upcoming winter system. Totals continue to tick up slightly,
however so do the easterly winds on Saturday for the region,
lending to reduced confidence in exactly how much snow areas in
the northeast will receive. Bigelbach

Morning Update (9am MST): Generally the forecast remains the same.
With the addition of recently updated model solutions with regards
to QPF and snow ratios, the output snow amounts actually increase
just a bit across the region. The gradient is a bit broader still
and higher for places north and east of a line bisecting
Whitewater-Glasgow-Glendive than that produced by more national
guidance, further justifying the north and eastward push in the
advisory. Guidances still bring in two distinct waves of snowfall
for northeastern half of the CWA, once tomorrow and once on
Saturday. The southwestern half may see continuous snowfall for
the totality of the 54 hour period beginning this afternoon.
The limiting factor may end up being the easterlies on Saturday,
which continue to need to be bumped up in speed. Should that
happen, it is not unreasonable to think that the northeast half of
the CWA may see very little accumulating snowfall out of the
Saturday push. This is probably the area of most uncertainty
currently with regards to this storm. Bigelbach

...SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM SET TO IMPACT PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST
MONTANA THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THIS WEEK...

Forecast challenge and focus continues to be the expected winter
storm through many portions of Montana with increasing
confidence.

Deterministic model solutions and consensus continue to fall in
line with expected snow fall map images from WPC winter desk.

Beginning today, snow will spread from north central portions of
the state through central and southeastern portions. This will
basically take this first push of snow on a path through SW
Phillips, Petroleum, and Garfield Counties. With these areas
being the first of ours to be hit and the additional snowfall
expected, we felt it was best to issue a winter storm warning for
them. Generally the next arc of counties or zones to the NE will
be under a winter weather advisory beginning 6 hours later which
will represent lesser snow amounts expected over the course of the
storm. Then lastly, our NE zones will be the only ones simply
remaining in the wind chill advisory with only trace amounts of
snow up to a few inches possible.

As most of the focus will be with the snowfall from this storm,
not as much emphasis will be on hazardous wind chills, but it
should be noted that wind chill values Friday night through
Saturday morning will easily reach dangerous levels of 40 below to
50 below zero. For those zones not in a warning or advisory for
snow, they many need to be upgraded to a wind chill warning.
Forecast wind speeds during that time are around 5 to 10 mph,
which don't exactly meet criteria, but recent practice has been to
err on the side of impacts and caution. Next and subsequent
shifts will need to consider this possible need to upgrade.

Speaking specifically to snow fall totals expected for the entire
duration of this winter storm (today through late Saturday night)
line up thusly: Trace to two inches near and NE of a line from
Opheim through Wolf Point toward Beach, ND; Three to six inches
near and either side of a relatively narrow line from Sleeping
Buffalo, through Fort Peck, through Circle and Hoyt; Eight to
Fourteen inches near and SW of a line from Zortman through Jordan
and Hillside.

Do not expect much blowing and drifting snow with this storm as
forecast winds remain mostly slower than 10-12 mph. Looking like
another round of fine, light, powdery snow to end the year.

After this storm and into the first week of January, the forecast
calls for warmer temperatures and no new snow.        BMickelson

.AVIATION...

Expected Flight Category: MVFR to IFR.

Synopsis: A strong winter storm system pushing through the region
over the next couple of days will continue to bring accumulating
snowfall to all of the sites. MVFR ceilings will continue
overnight and into Friday, with IFR or potentially worse
conditions at any locations where snowfall is actively occurring.
A slight break in the action is anticipated tomorrow evening,
which should ease the ceiling and visibility situation at the TAF
sites.

Winds: Northeast winds at around 5-10 kts overnight will become
more northerly at 5-10 kts early in the morning, which should
persist the rest of the day.
