.DISCUSSION...
...More hazardous wind chills continue tonight...

6pm Update:

Adjusted temperatures down below blended guidance with the clouds
a little slow to move into the region. High pressure over south
central Saskatchewan will continue to drift southeast overnight.
This will keep the wind fairly light. Clouds will slowly spread
over the region and this should slow the falling temperatures
some. However, did introduce a -40 area over Northern Valley. No
other changes needed at this time.   Proton

Previous Discussion:

The large Arctic upper low is centered over Hudson Bay this
afternoon, which has established a broad trough over most of
CONUS, except for the far West, where a ridge in building in. The
cold surface high is still centered over Northeast Montana and
keeping most clouds at bay, thus producing more low frigid
temperatures tonight.

The Arctic front remains well to our southwest late this
afternoon, located from the Divide to Northern Wyoming. So any
overrunning moisture will also remain well to the southwest
tonight. However, as the western ridge makes its presence felt,
the front will begin to shift east. This will allow mid-level
clouds to drift in after midnight.

By tomorrow, the Hudson Bay low begins to weaken and the upper
trough flattens somewhat. Modification in the upper flow will
allow for Pacific moisture to spread across the Northern Rockies,
while cold air remains over the Northern High Plains. This will
result in an overrunning light snow for portions of central or
eastern Montana.

Very cold temperatures will continue tonight, but not quite as
cold as last night. Although winds will be generally light, wind
chill to minus 35 are expected at times. A gradual increase in
clouds are expected late tonight, so there may be enough hours of
clear skies in the northeast half of the forecast area for very
cold temperatures. The wind chill advisory was continued through
tonight and Wednesday morning.

Lake effect clouds and light snow around the Dry Arm of Fort Peck
Lake is expected to continue tonight. However, wind may be too
light to push the plume off the main portion of the lake. Light
southeast winds will develop by this evening which could move the
plume north towards the Glasgow area tonight, bringing in low
clouds.

With a more WNW flow aloft on Wednesday, expect some moderation
of temperatures to mostly above zero by Wednesday afternoon. A
shortwave trough and cold front sliding through the area Wednesday
afternoon and evening could bring enough moisture for a chance of
light snow to the area.

Models differ significantly on the forecast for our areas late
Wednesday Night and Thursday. This is due to the models having a
hard time agreeing where the actual thermal boundary will be,
since it will be wandering about.

GFS bring an Arctic high through the forecast area with mostly
dry weather. ECMWF bring a significant band of overrunning
moisture with several inches of snow to the SW half of the
forecast area with the high pressure staying to the east of the
forecast area. The NAM is somewhere in between these two extremes
at this point. Will have a chance of snow in the SW half of the
forecast area for now with the NE mainly dry. Will go with a
blend.

Another round of overrunning moisture with a shortwave moves
through most of NE Montana Thursday Night and Friday and models
are in much better agreement with this round. this will be a
significant snow event for areas to our west and southwest. The
best chance of accumulating snow for us will be over the SW half
of the forecast area. The northeast corner may not see any snow
from that system.

The next wave with more overrunning moisture is expected Friday
Night and Saturday and models differ on where to spread the
moisture. Will generally broadbrush a chance of snow for now.

Arctic high pressure builds into the area by Sunday with mainly
dry and bitter cold. Dry weather continues into early next week
with an upper ridge building to the west which may allow
temperatures to moderate.

VFR, except lake effect low clouds over and near Fort Peck Lake
will produce occasional MVFR and IFR ceilings at times and
possibly isolated light snow. This will drift with the surface
wind.

Synopsis:

Surface high pressure will keep winds light tonight with continued
bitter cold temperatures. There will be some mid and high level
clouds will move in after midnight. The Arctic front which is
well to our southwest will drift closer Wednesday, possibly
bringing overrunning moisture and periods of light snow, along
with low clouds.

A Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect through noon Wednesday
for bitter cold wind chills 20 below to 40 below.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Between Wednesday Night and Saturday, there will be frequent
chances for accumulating snow. Several upper level disturbances
are expected track across the area. There is uncertainty in
timing and track of these systems. Continue to monitor the
