Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Glasgow MT 906 AM MDT Sat Oct 21 2017 .SHORT TERM...for northeast Montana...today through Sun... The wind remains the story, currently from the west at 15-25G35kt. There are some light rain showers moving across Northeast Montana but little is reaching the surface. The upper trough is swinging through the local area this morning, and should be in North Dakota by afternoon. That will allow wind to relax around sunset. Although wind diminishes for the evening, the Lake Wind Advisory will remain in effect due to the next increases wind early Sunday morning. Temperatures are expected to rise to seasonal norms today. Edits were to update based on near term guidance. Templer Previous discussion - Upper trof over Montana with cold front into the Dakotas. Strong low level jet behind the front with cold air advection and pressure rises keeping airmass mixed. Another band of showers also moving into the western zones, to help bring the winds down, and gusting to 40 or 50 mph. Showers expected to lift out of the region during the morning, but the strong gusty winds will continue through the day. Temperatures will be around 20 degrees cooler than yesterday limiting the fire weather concerns. Lake wind advisory remains in effect. Slight ridge develops tonight as the upper trof exits the state. Winds will be diminishing as clearing skies allow for airmass to decouple and the ridging weakens the winds aloft. Very strong Pacific jet punches across the Rockies on Sunday, forming an Alberta clipper in the morning. Stacked westerly flow will bring the winds down across the prairie fairly quickly in the morning. With 50 to 60 kts at 850 and 700mb will issue High Wind Watch for southwest Phillips county. Some indication that ridge tops across the remainder of Phillips county, along with Valley and Garfield counties, could see gusts to 55 or 60 mph, so watch may need to be expanded. With the winds increasing early in the day, extended lake wind advisory from today even with the winds diminishing tonight. Ebert .LONG TERM...Sun night through Sat... Clipper system dives toward the Great Lakes early in the week, with upper trof digging over the northern Plains. Cold air advection and pressure rises behind the clipper will keep strong winds over the region Sunday night into Monday, with lake wind advisory extended through Monday afternoon. Tuesday into Wednesday, a warming and drying trend returns to the area thanks to high pressure building over the northern Rockies. Wednesday night through Thursday night, a strong cold front pushes through the region.
