Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 632 AM CDT Sat Oct 7 2017 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 323 AM CDT Sat Oct 7 2017 Rainfall will be exiting the eastern half of our area through the morning hours, with clearing skies from northwest to southeast. At the edge of the clearing line, fog has currently developed over parts of east central SD, and have accounted for that in the grids. Would not be surprised if the fog becomes rather dense over parts of Beadle and Kingsbury counties through sunrise, and we will monitor that for any forthcoming dense fog headline potential. Otherwise the organized rainfall has generally scoured out for the most part. However as the last remnants of PV moves eastward along with stubborn trowaling in the 310-320K layer, light rain could very well reform early this morning across our southeast zones, then gradually drift eastward as the morning progresses. Not expecting anymore hefty rainfall amounts, so cancelled the flash flood watch. A southwest/westerly flow of air will become well mixed this afternoon, but wind speeds will be tempered a bit by wet ground for many locations. Therefore expecting a breezy day but nothing real outstanding in terms of real strong wind speeds. Highs should range from the upper 60s in our far eastern zones, to the mid 70s west. Tonight, a wind shift/weak cold front will begin moving across the western half of our area. Some mid clouds may scoot along our far northern zones but likely not enough to alter low temperatures. However, there is enough mixing through the boundary layer in our western zones to possibly keep their lows from plummeting too far. At this time, weighted model temperatures for lows looked the best which cools off east central SD the most. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 323 AM CDT Sat Oct 7 2017 A subtle shortwave trough moves through the zonally oriented jet stream on Sunday. Lift and moisture is limited such that no precipitation is expected with the weak surface low moving through the region. The most obvious sensible weather change will be a wind shift from Saturday's warm southwest winds to slightly cooler northwesterly breezes Sunday. Expect partly cloudy skies with seasonally warm high temperatures in the 60s. An upper level trough amplifies over the western CONUS on Monday, and quickly marches eastward through the central Plains. Most of the dynamic support for rain with this system will stay further south in Nebraska, but models continue to show chances for light rain showers late Monday into Tuesday morning, forced by the weak convergence with the inverted surface trough moving through. In contrast with recent rains, precipitation accumulations look very light. Skies will clear in the wake of this system as surface high pressure builds in, making for a chilly Tuesday morning. This will be the next opportunity for frost, with Gregory county north toward Huron seeing the best chances. These locations could even dip below freezing in the pre-dawn hours. Mid-week should be dry with temperatures a few degrees above averages. It's not until Friday into next weekend that rain chances return, with a broad mid-latitude cyclone developing in the lee of the Rockies. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning) Issued at 626 AM CDT Sat Oct 7 2017 In the near term, strong storm system exiting this area has made the TAF sites rather a challenge to forecast. Current satellite shows KHON right on the edge of some pretty significant fog. Therefore not real confident on how low conditions may go in KHON before clearing out for good by about 14Z. So may have to amend KHON if the visibility and/or ceilings plummet to LIFR conditions. At KSUX, light rain has regenerated with LIFR conditions just north of there in reduced visibilities.
