.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Satellite imagery currently shows mostly clear skies across the tri-
state area. Surface observing stations show widespread temperatures
in the 40s and even a few upper 30s in places like Huron and
Gregory, SD. Most locations will cool a few degrees yet through the
early morning hours, with patchy frost still possible in locations
covered by the Frost Advisory. An additional hazard this morning
will be patchy fog near river valleys and other low-lying basins.
Widespread fog looks unlikely, with a dry near-surface layer and a
light northwest wind hindering formation. Any fog that does manage
to form should quickly dissipate after sunrise.
Mostly clear skies are expected through mid-day, with temperatures
reaching just shy of seasonal averages. A warm front will begin to
advect warm and moist air in from the southwest during the evening,
bringing increasing mid-level clouds into the area. Rain chances
increase after dark as modest lift accompanies the frontal passage.
The better moisture transport and lift is still forecast to be south
of our area over the I-80 corridor, which could limit the amount of
rain that falls further north in the I-90 corridor. Nevertheless,
modest elevated instability could support embedded weak
thunderstorms capable of brief moderate to heavy rains. Overall,
kept mention of thunder relatively low Thursday morning given
limited CAPE and nearly moist adiabatic lapse rates throughout the
storm depth.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Focus leading off the active intermediate term continues to be
precipitation timing/amounts, with eyes on the harvest impact across
the area.
Weak upper ridge in proximity Thursday, with elevated warm advection
well underway to start Thursday. Broad isentropic lift zone shifts
slowly eastward through the day, in favor of progressively more
shallow lift profile back through eastern SD. Thermodynamic profiles
generally vary from moist neutral to an elevated CAPE of a few
hundred J/kg at best, so within better coverage of showers during
the morning would likely be isolated to scattered storms, but look
to more of a drizzly/short shower type day with clouds hanging tough
transitioning into the afternoon, especially further west through
eastern SD. With the general dreary conditions, temps will struggle
to the upper 50s to lower 60s.
Could still be quieter in a relative sense on Thursday evening, but
soon larger scale lift with begin to impact the plains with trough
edging through the central Rockies. Main factor to consider with
precipitation is location of the surface to 925 hPa boundary closer
to I-80, which appears that it may get quite active on Thursday
night. The convection will impact the low-level jet which should
veer toward eastern IA/IL by later Thu night. With more widespread
convection south on the lower boundary, will rely on broader mid-
level frontal forcing to focus lift. Again, thermodynamic profiles
lack any stronger instability signal, and likely to keep any thunder
closer to the lower Missouri River valley.
Friday into Friday night continues to have a wet signal as inverted
trough develops toward far southeast SD/northwest IA/southwest MN on
Friday as short wavelength trough pushes out into the plains. ECMWF
is a bit slower and more wrapped up with the trough as it passes by
on Friday night and early Saturday, but is not supported by any
other operational solutions. Overall, really locked into the shallow
cooler air with east to northeast near surface flow, and looks
likely that moderately heavy QPF would occur at times from Friday
into Friday evening from northeast NE toward southwest MN bringing
perhaps 1-2 inches of rainfall by the time rainfall winds down early
Saturday. Still some concerns that QPF may not be quite as high,
depending on how boisterous convection becomes closer to I-80, but
will have an approximately moist neutral profile which would be
efficient for precip production.
In wake of system on Saturday, conditions will rebound nicely and
make for a very pleasant early October day with highs in the upper
60s to lower 70s. A wind shift will drop through Saturday night with
little fanfare, and cooling will be only slight at this point for
Sunday with highs in the 60s. A deeper trough will settle into the
northern Plains early in the week, but models have some pretty loud
differences as to when the more significant waves will cycle through
the feature. There could be a few showers with advancement of trough
axis from later Sunday night into Monday across mainly northwest IA,
but confidence is low at this point. Generally, look for temps to
drop quite a bit during the early week, perhaps mainly 50s by
Tuesday, and perhaps a threat for some areas of frost again toward
Tuesday or Wednesday morning.

Although patchy fog is still possible in some river valleys this
morning, the impact looks to be minimal, with most observing
stations still showing a multiple degree spread in dew point
depression. This is combined with no indication of fog on
satellite imagery, light northwest winds, and a relatively dry
boundary layer. In addition, mid-level cloud cover has developed
over some of the areas around KSUX most prone to fog in situations
like today. All this leads to lower confidence in fog formation.
After a pleasant day with partly clear skies and light winds, a
northeastward progressing warm front will bring lowering cloud
decks Wednesday night. Many sites will have a chance for rain with
the warm front beginning around 05/0600z. Modest instability
could lead to isolated thunderstorms with brief moderate to heavy
rain embedded in more widespread light showers. These heavier
showers could briefly drop conditions down to MVFR categories.
