Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 947 AM MST Sun Feb 26 2017 .SYNOPSIS... An unsettled pattern will continue through the first half of the week, with breezy and cool conditions along with a good chance for rain and snow showers. Dry weather and a warming trend is then forecast Wednesday through the end of the week. && .UPDATE...Current regional radar imagery depicts elevated mid- level precipitation spreading across northern Arizona primarily along and south of I-40. This is in response to a weak trough over western Arizona forecast to pivot west to east across the state today. The 12z Flagstaff sounding indicates a dry layer up to 600mb, or 6500 feet above ground level. As the mid-level precipitation falls into the drier low levels, cloud bases should also drop through the day. Very light precipitation could reach the surface later today, with snow levels between 5000-5500 feet. Accumulations should be light. Overnight, a strong mid-level inversion is forecast to set up around 700mb near the San Francisco peaks. Strong southwesterly wind gusts around 40 knots will likely develop downwind of the peaks, primarily across Doney Park in the 2am-8am Monday period. Trash/recycling bins could be thrashed about if not secured properly. The focus then shifts to the Monday-Tuesday winter system. Will wait until the latest ECMWF becomes available to make adjustments to the precipitation forecast. Stay tuned. && .PREV DISCUSSION /347 AM MST/... The first of two troughs of low pressure is moving through the region today with cold temperatures and showers across the region. Temperatures are expected to be at their lowest values during this first system. Snow levels this morning will be around 4500 feet allowing for early shower activity to fall as snow with some light accumulations possible. Snowfall amounts from this quick moving shortwave should generally range from 0.5 to 1 inch. This is due to the quick moving and dry nature of this first wave. A brief quiet period will develop this evening and last overnight before the next trough begins to affect the area. By Monday afternoon moisture ahead of the next trough will begin to stream into the area on from the Pacific coast off the Baja penisula. While confidence over available liquid precipitation has risen due to an continued increase in the amount of atmospheric moisture over the past 24 hours, confidence in snowfall amounts remains more conservative. The main concern is the warm nature of the moisture plume associated with this second system. Models continue to push towards a warming trend through the second event. If this solution comes to pass snow levels could initially start out cold enough for snowfall at lower elevations before transitioning to rainfall as the storm progresses across Northern Arizona. Model Soundings suggest that some of these warmer solutions are overplaying the potential for this transition, however there is not a lot of room for error in the temperature profile across Northern Arizona. Areas that are currently forecast to experience a significant winter event may have a warmer and wetter reality. Have kept with a cooler solution for the time being. Moderate confidence in a winter weather event has necessitated the need for a Winter Storm Watch for locations above 6000 feet along the Mogollon Rim from late Monday Morning through Tuesday Afternoon. Interested parties should continue to pay close attention to the forecast due to the amount of change that could occur from relatively small changes in the forecast solutions. As previously mentioned confidence is increasing in a significant moisture event that could create some impacts across the lower terrain especially in Yavapai and Northern Gila Counties. Have held off on issuing any hydrologic highlights at this time, however some may become necessary as the event nears. From Wednesday onward drying and warming conditions are expected across the region as a ridge of high pressure builds into the area. This should continue through rest of the week and into the weekend with temperatures climbing back above seasonal averages. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z package...Widespread ceilings 5000-7000 above ground level for the next 24 hours. An upper level disturbance will move from west to east across northern Arizona today, with areas of MVFR ceilings and showers across the high terrain of northern Arizona. Showers to move out of the state after 00Z but areas of MVFR ceilings will remain. Surface winds southwest 5-20 knots. Northern Gila...Navajo...and Yavapai Counties in Northern Arizona. .Day One...Today and Tonight A fast moving upper level disturbance will bring a quick shot of showers to northern Arizona today. Snow levels will be in the 4500 to 5500 foot range with snow accumulations generally less than one half an inch. Temperatures will continue to be below normal. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Friday A winter storm watch is in effect for areas above 6000 feet along the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains from 11 am Monday through 5 pm Tuesday. The current snowfall forecast has storm totals from 8-12 inches across the populated areas of the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains. 4 to 8 inches of snow are possible across the Kaibab Plateau and Chuska Mountains. For now it appears that little to no snow accumulation is expected for Prescott or Payson. Liquid precipitation totals for Monday and Tuesday are forecast to range from 0.75 inch to one inch across areas south of I-40 primarily over Yavapai and Gila counties, and along the Mogollon Rim. These amounts will likely cause rises in creeks and streams in Yavapai and Gila counties. No major flooding impacts are expected at this time. Clearing to return Tuesday night with fair and warmer weather starting Wednesday. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
