Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 844 PM MST Fri Mar 3 2017 .SYNOPSIS...Expect dry weather and slightly above normal daytime temperatures Saturday. Windy conditions should develop on Sunday, with some very light precipitation possible along a cold front from Sunday night into Monday. Beginning Tuesday, high pressure is expected to lead to dry weather and a warming trend. && .UPDATE...High clouds are draped across the southeastern half of the forecast area this evening in response to a weak trough moving through Arizona. Expect these to decrease west to east overnight with additional scattered high clouds beginning to move in from the west. The short term forecast is in good shape with no major updates needed. && .PREV DISCUSSION /255 PM MST/... Satellite imagery shows extensive high level cloud cover across the southern half of Arizona this afternoon. These clouds should dissipate overnight as the upper level wave responsible for them weakens and moves east. Southwest flow aloft to strengthen over Arizona this weekend as an upper level trough and surface cold front move onto the West coast. Surface winds here should become southwesterly and breezy Saturday afternoon. Faster speeds are being shown in the progs for Sunday through early Monday as the surface cold front approaches Sunday and moves across the northland early Monday. At this time it looks wind gusts in the 40 to 55 mph range are possible Sunday afternoon along and north of the Mogollon rim, and then Sunday night across areas northeast of the rim (House Rock Valley- doney Park- Show Low-Springerville). Not sure what the model continuity has been with these speeds, and more clouds than less on Sunday could hamper deep mixing, thus will defer to later shifts the if, when, and where of a Wind Advisory. We kept the slight chance of showers going Sunday night through early Monday with the cold frontal passage, but moisture looks pretty slim with this one, especially for areas south of I-40. Tuesday through Saturday, warming westerly flow aloft to develop across the desert southwest.
