.SYNOPSIS...
Nice weather and fairly mild temps are in store for Saturday
night across the Borderland just before major changes will take
place. A very strong cold front will sweep into the area from the
east Sunday morning bringing very strong and gusty winds
especially on west slopes and passes Sunday into Monday.
Following record high temperatures Saturday, temperatures will
plunge some 35 to 40 degrees by Monday and Tuesday. Aloft, an
upper level low pressure system will be moving into our area from
the southwest Sunday through Tuesday. The combination of the
surface and upper air features will generate widespread rain
showers or rain mixed with snow across the lower elevations along
with areas of heavy snow across the mountains later Sunday through
Tuesday afternoon. A few lowland locations may get some light
accumulations. Even an isolated thunderstorm or two is possible
with some small hail and sleet. Next Wednesday high pressure and
westerly winds aloft will produce warmer and dry weather to
prevail though Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
A Deep upper low continues to develop and dig off the southern
California coast by MOnday combine with a cold Polar backdoor
front to bring major changes to the borderland. Record high temps
at KELP today and temps in the upper nineties to 100 in SW
oklahoma serve as a proxy to the strength of our future storm
system. What goes up must come down and it will with a vengeance
starting Sunday afternoon. The record heat and dryness resulted
from a very deep surface low over the Texas and Oklahoma
panhandles today.
Major changes will start Sunday. A strong Canadian cold front
will move to the southwest across the CWA tomorrow morning with
east to northeast winds behind the boundary advecting much cooler
air( 30-40 degrees colder by Tuesday). A very tight pressure
gradients at low levels (16 mb at the surface) will also support
strong winds across the southern zones with wind advisories and
high wind warnings are in effect.
Snow levels may start around 7000 feet Sunday but by Late MOnday
into Tuesday morning may be as low as 5000 feet or locally lower
in a few locations.
Some Synoptic Features:
All models in good agreement out 60 hours with the closed low
farther south (Nam) and farther north (ECMWF) and GFS in the
middle with a total spread of only about 60 miles. Low overhead
ELP arn 00z Tuesday (-20 H5) Strong Polar Jet will position itself
to give us (more or less) in the Left front Quadrant Monday
afternoon. Nam and GFS forecast soundings suggest some ELEVATED
cape (100-300 J) Sunday and Monday afternoons could cause isolated
tstms (SPC has us under a tstm risk). Also associated with the PFJ
models forecast differential vorticity advection both Sunday and
Monday afternoons which will be the mechanism to set off the
elevated convection. Low levels are forecast to remain fairly warm
until about 00z Tues so most precip will be rain rain/snow mix
lowlands. Precip water forecasts remain very consistent at the .5
- .6 level for the lowlands. Dew point forecasts in the lower 30s
will support evaporative cooling in the lowlands.
Impacts:
Thermal shock as temps go from 84 Saturday to 35 Late
Monday early Tuesday. Heavy snow above 6000 feet for the Gila and
Sacramento Mountains causing travel difficulties and hazards. High
winds (gusts 50-60 mph) west slopes and passes (Otero Mesa, west
El Paso, Hueco Tanks) may cause spotty damage along with cold
windchill temps. Overall rain/snow/sleet mix will contribute to
difficult and hazardous driving conditions. Blowing snow in
mountains areas and some lowland locations will cause windchill
and reduced visibilities posing hazards to travel. Very isolated
convection (tstm) may cause bursts of heavier precipitation with
small hail/sleet causing low temporary low visibilities and slick
roads.
Keep warm and and dry as the period of Sunday night
through Tuesday morning will be wet, cold, and blustery
Expect upper low center to move east of the cwa later Tuesday
morning resulting in a decrease in precipitation during the late
morning and only some backwash by afternoon. Northerly flow aloft
behind the low will be followed by westerly winds resulting result
in dry weather with warming temperatures Wednesday through Friday.
At this time a Pacific cold front is forecast to bring some wind
and precipitation to the Borderland by next Saturday.

with the greatest coverage west of divide.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Big changes are coming tonight with the passage of a cold front.
Gusty east to northeast winds will bring in much colder air with
highs going from upper 70s to lower 80s today into the mid 50s to
mid 60s for Sunday and into the 40s by Monday. Rain/snow will be
widespread starting late Sunday through Monday. Snow levels will
generally remain above 5000 feet but some mixed precip or sleet is
possible Monday over the lowlands. Over a foot of snow is
possible in the highest elevations of the Sacs. Drier weather
with a gradual warmup is expected for the remainder of the week
with highs again approaching 70 by Friday with light winds through
week.
