.SYNOPSIS...Rain will make its return today, and continue through
the weekend into early next week. Cooler air will be filtering into
the area during the weekend, lowering snow level to 1500 to 2000
feet. Potential for snow for higher elevation locations from
Saturday night through Monday. Winter Storm Watch still in effect
for those locations. Wet weather will persist through most of next
week.

.DISCUSSION...All good things must come to an end. For NW
California, hope that you all have enjoyed the last few days of dry
weather. We are heading into a period of active weather. This
morning, there is a well developed upper level longwave trough
centered over Gulf of Alaska. This upper level trough is steering
ample moisture from the East Pacific Ocean towards the West Coast of
North America. At the same time, the upper level low is making its
way equatorward bringing much colder air towards the Pacific
Northwest. This weather system will be the major weather maker for
NW California through this weekend.
For today, precipitation should spread into Crescent City by this
afternoon. The precipitation will then spread across rest of the
area tonight. Rainfall rate will be moderate, around half an inch
during the overnight hours. Snow level should be around 4500 to 5500
feet through tonight. However, much colder air will filter into the
area Saturday. Snow level will be lowering to 2000 feet for Del
Norte County, and around 3500 feet for Mendocino County on Saturday.
This should warrant snow in higher elevation locations. Major
highways including US 101, Highway 299, Highway 36 will see
accumulating snow, especially at pass level. Snow level will
continue to drop to around 1500 feet by Saturday night, and continue
into Sunday night. Snow level will start to rebound on Monday as
warmer air tries to make its return to the area. Through the
weekend, expect moderate precipitation rate. QPF amount will be
about 0.25 to 0.35 inches every 6 hours. The airmass impacting the
area will be having a maritime origin. Thus, use a snow ratio of 8
to 1 in computing the snow amount. Looks like the highest impact
area will be the Coast Mountain north of Highway 36, including Barry
Summit and Collier Tunnel. Looks like it is possible for them to see
24 hour snowfall rate exceeding 7 inches, which is the Winter Storm
Warning criteria. For areas from Highway 36 south, looks like the 24
hour snowfall rate should exceed 4 inches, which is the Winter
Weather Advisory criteria. However, there are still uncertainties in
the snowfall forecast, as models are trying to nail down the
corridor of heaviest precipitation. Thus, keep the Winter Storm
Watch going for now. Please stay tuned for the latest forecast
update.
After this weekend, snow level will increase. However, we will be
stuck in a wet pattern. Models are hinting on a plume of moisture
moving into the area from the southwest. It will be good if you have
rainboot to be prepared for this extended period of wet weather.

.AVIATION...Patches of coastal stratus lurking around Humboldt bay
may briefly creep into KACV later this morning, otherwise VFR
conditions with abundant high level clouds will continue to stream
over the area this morning. A frontal system will approach this
afternoon. Pre-frontal isentropic ascent ahead of the boundary may
produce some light showers, mainly north of Trinidad head this
afternoon. Overall ceilings and vsbys will remain relatively good
today. Conditions will start to deteriorate this evening as the
front generates a push of low level moist air and rain for the
coastal terminals. Mostly MVFR cigs and vsbys are anticipated,
however conditions may fall to IFR in light to moderate rain and
mist. KUKI should remain VFR today and tonight. Moisture and showers
will probably take til early Saturday morning to push into KUKI.

.MARINE...A weak front will approach from the NW today, then push
through the waters tonight. Winds may briefly gust to 25-30 kt with
the front this afternoon and evening in the far northern portions of
pzz470 and 450 near the ORCA border. Otherwise winds will be sub-
advisory with this front. Post-frontal ridging will result in a
period of lighter W-SW winds late tonight into early Sat, before a
secondary trough/low approaches from the NW. SW winds will be
borderline for an advisory in the northern waters. We stay in a
fairly brisk westerly-southwest wind pattern through Sunday as the
low meanders around offshore the Pacific Northwest and the air mass
over the waters grows increasingly unstable this weekend.
A northwesterly fetch on the backside of the low will generate a
short period WNW swell that will produce hazardous seas Saturday
night through Monday. Current indications are for seas to reach 12
feet, however the ENP and NWPS are probably too low with the
heights. A small craft advisory will most likely need to be issued.
It is still 1.5 days out in the future and will defer this decision
to the next shift.
