AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...After a dry start to the day, rainfall will develop
by this evening along with high elevation mountain snows and
gusty winds. Precipitation will taper off on Monday, but rains
will return area-wide by Tuesday and persist through Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...A frontal band of clouds and rain continues to move
toward the Redwood Coast. IR satellite imagery indicates the
coldest cloud tops continue to lift NE toward OR as the associated
upper trof continues to become more negatively tilted. Still,
moderate to heavy rains are indicated in a narrow band offshore. A
lightning strike or two have been detected within this line. Have
added isolated thunder to the the N coastal waters zones for this
evening, but have left thunder out of the land forecast. Rainfall
amounts will range from one half inch to one inch across much of
Del Norte County along with terrain favored areas of Humboldt
County. Amounts closer to one quarter of an inch are expected
elsewhere (including around Humboldt Bay where downslope flow will
reduce rain amounts). Snow levels will start out this evening
around 4000 feet and slowly drop to between 3000 and 3500 feet
across the N 1/2 of the area by Monday morning. Some snow amounts
above 6 inches are possible across interior Del Norte, but these
locations will be above 4500 feet. A few locations down to 3500
feet may receive a couple of inches of snow by Monday morning.

The models have latched onto an approaching low pressure system on
Tuesday. Have bumped up pops for Tuesday, especially for the
afternoon. This system will pivot NNE on the front side of a
deepening upper trof and another low approaches the area. Although
rain intensity will decrease late Wednesday night and early
Thursday, PoPs will remain high until the second system weakens
and heads E Thursday night. Forecast uncertainty increases next
weekend, but early indications are that at least Saturday might be
mostly dry. Stay tuned! /SEC

.AVIATION...A cold front will bring a period of rain and MVFR
ceilings, perhaps with a few dips to IFR, late this afternoon and
evening. A few strikes of lightning will also be possible at CEC and
ACV during the evening. Rain will transition to showers overnight
along the coast, and these will diminish by early tomorrow morning.
Ceilings will likely remain low through the night, but will become
more scattered/broken as showers develop. At UKI, rain will not
arrive until late in the overnight period, and will diminish by mid
morning. /BRC

.MARINE...A cold front continues to approach the waters this
afternoon, and southerly winds will continue to increase to near
Gale strength as it does. Sustained wind speeds of 30 kt with
occasional gusts to 40 kt will be possible late this afternoon and
evening across mainly the northern outer waters, with a few gale
force gusts possible in the inner waters. Some of the stronger gusts
are likely to occur along a broken line of thunderstorms along the
frontal boundary. Seas will build and become steep as a result, but
while seas will be steepest today, the largest significant wave
heights are expected to occur Monday as a long period westerly swell
builds into the waters.  However, wind speeds will be light by this
time, and as such, the Gale Warning has been trimmed so that it
expires Sunday evening as opposed to Monday. Mariners should be
aware that seas will remain somewhat large through Monday, even
though winds will be diminishing will before then.

After a break in storms Monday, Tuesday through the end of the week
looks active, with a series of storm systems set to impact the
coast. While neither of these storms looks particularly strong, at
least relative to these waters, winds will be somewhat breezy,
likely fluctuating between 15 and 30 kt as multiple cold fronts move
through the waters. Winds will shift to the north at some point
Thursday or Friday, again remaining somewhat breezy but not likely
to Gale strength. This will keep seas somewhat elevated and within
Small Craft Advisory levels through the end of the work week. /BRC
