Mild temperatures can be expected through Friday, but substantial
heat is on the way for Sunday and beyond. Residents across the
interior valleys can expect to see several days of triple digit
heat and should prepare accordingly.

then quickly improve as surface winds increase. /WCI

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 327 PM PDT Thu Jun 15 2017/

SYNOPSIS...
Mild temperatures can be expected through Friday, but substantial
heat is on the way for Sunday and beyond. Residents across the
interior valleys can expect to see several days of triple digit
heat and should prepare accordingly.

DISCUSSION...
A weak passing front will move through the Pacific Northwest tonight
bringing light rain to the Oregon coast. This front will sag into
far northern California bringing chances for rain to Del Norte
County and far northern Humboldt County into Friday morning. Any
rain will be very light with likely only sprinkles in the Humboldt
Bay area. Temperatures will remain seasonable through Friday.

A notable pattern change will begin Saturday as high pressure to our
south gradually builds northward. This building high pressure will
result in steadily increasing temperatures for interior areas, and
by Sunday widespread triple digit readings can be expected
throughout the interior valleys of Mendocino, Trinity, and perhaps
even portions of Humboldt county. Some of the hottest areas can
expect to see temperatures in the 103-108 degree range, particularly
near Ukiah, Weaverville, Covelo, and surrounding low elevation
valleys. This will be within striking distance of record high values
in Ukiah and perhaps other locations as well, and is generally 15 to
20 degrees above normal for mid-June. While there will be minor
fluctuations in high temperatures, this heat will likely last into
at least the middle of the week and possibly beyond. Given that much
of the region will see the warmest temperatures of the season so
far, and the extended duration of well above normal heat expected,
future forecasts will likely require heat advisories for portions
of these areas. Will hold off for now given that the onset of the
worst heat is not expected until Sunday, and there is still
uncertainty as to the duration of truly impactful heat.
Fortunately, high pressure and a relatively dry airmass will allow
for efficient cool air drainage in the mountain valleys
overnight, a process which should help provide overnight relief
and mitigate heat impacts somewhat.

Along the immediate coast, a stubborn marine layer inversion will
likely keep temperatures from climbing too far above normal, and
afternoon highs will likely only reach the mid to perhaps upper 60s
even as interior temperatures soar. In fact, the warmest
temperatures along the immediate coast may actually occur through
Saturday, and especially Saturday given the presence of slight
offshore flow.

Meanwhile, while most areas will remain dry, the expected strong
heating combined with marginal moisture may generate enough
instability to result in a few high-based convective showers across
the interior mountains Sunday and beyond. However, shower chances
are much more substantial across the Sierra Nevada where moisture
will be more plentiful. /BRC/RPA

AVIATION...
A profusion of mostly mid level clouds continued to stream into the
region today while gradually spreading south and eastward. These
clouds correspond with an upper level trough...and the associated
(weak warm) frontal system brushing across the northernmost forecast
area. Light rain was reported at Crescent City's airport on the 9:00
am report...as well as light fog. Model guidance is indicating that
the bulk of precipitation will be mostly confined to Northern
Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Around 2 pm, light sprinkles were
reported in vicinity of ACV. The ASOS reported a trace. Although
expecting nominal amounts of rain, CEC's terminal will be the
greater recipient through afternoon and evening. Models are hinting
at somewhat deteriorating cloud heights overnight. There is some
room for skepticism that cigs will drop to low IFR/LIFR though.

MARINE...
Split flow with light southerlies north of Cape Mendocino and light
northerlies to the south will persist into Friday as a weak front
moves through the Pacific Northwest. Upper level ridging will re-
establish itself over the western U.S. beginning Friday afternoon
with surface high pressure building over the eastern Pacific. This
will allow northerly winds to once again expand over the entire
waters and intensify over the weekend into early next week as the
thermal trough strengthens over interior California. Small craft
conditions are certain across at least the outer waters by
Saturday night or Sunday, with the potential for gales Sunday into
Monday. A further ramp up in the winds may develop mid to late
next week. /RPA
