Snowfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 6 inches. The heavier amounts will likely be focused on the Highway 30 and Interstate 80 corridors, where snowfall rates of an inch or more per hour will lead to rapid accumulation and very poor visibility for the evening commute. Starting very late tonight a prolonged wind chill advisory will go into effect for the entire area through Tuesday morning. During the daylight hours there will be times when the wind chills are warmer than 20 below zero. However, at night wind chills will drop back into the 20 to 30 below zero range. The probability is high that portions of the wind chill advisory will be upgraded at times to a wind chill warning. northern Missouri and Kansas. Dew points north of the boundary

Through late afternoon the overall snowfall intensity across eastern
Iowa will slowly decrease while snow continues along and east of the
Mississippi. Radar data has shown a very sharp cut off to the snow
with the far southern areas probably not seeing anything more than
some flurries.
There is a weak disturbance in the flow aloft that may allow
saturation to occur and produce a dusting of accumulation for areas
south of an Ottumwa, IA to Macomb, IL line late this afternoon or
evening.
Tonight, the snow will shut down from northwest to southeast during
the evening with possibly only some lingering flurries east of the
Mississippi around midnight.
Overall storm total snowfall amounts should easily be in the 3 to 5
inch range for the warning and at least 1 to 3 inches for most of
the advisory areas. Given the large number of accidents will keep
the current headlines for the storm as is.
After midnight, the initial surge of colder air will begin moving
into the area along with increasing winds. This colder air will mark
the beginning of a prolonged period of very cold weather that will
go into next week.
A multi-day headline for a wind chill advisory will begin for the
entire area starting at 4 AM Saturday.
Lows tonight will be in the single digits above and below zero.

Saturday through Tuesday: Incredible 1056 mb arctic high pressure
will slowly build southward into the Midwest, reaching the southern
Plains/Mid MS Valley by Tuesday. This will set up a prolonged period
of wind chill advisory/warning headlines. We will have a wind chill
advisory in effect all the way through noon on Tuesday. However,
wind chill warnings may be needed for at least a portion of the dvn
cwa from Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Of course, this will
include during the ringing in the new year. Record low temperatures
are expected for January 1 and the grids indicate a forecast of 15
below to 20 below zero, with maximum temps staying below zero. It
is possible some spots may be colder considering the fresh deeper
snow pack. 850 mb temps dip as low as -22c. Wind chills Sunday night
and New Years Day is expected to be in the 30 below to 40 below zero
range! This would be extremely dangerous cold to say the least.
Wednesday through Friday: Another cold front arrives Wednesday but
this airmass not as cold with a 1038 mb high to follow and 850 mb
temps as low as -16c. Still very cold but not as brutal as earlier
in the week. The warmest day of the week should be on Friday
when highs moderate into the teens.

Snow will overspread much of the outlook area from mid morning through early afternoon, then continue into early evening before ending. Snowfall amounts of 2 to 6 inches is likely over much of the area north of a line from Fairfield, Iowa to Galesburg, Illinois, with amounts tapering off to the south of this line. The heaviest snow amounts are likely to occur from around Highway 30 through the Interstate 80 corridor. The commute this afternoon is likely to be affected with periods of low visibility and rapid accumulation with snowfall rates of around 1 inch per hour at times, especially in the warning area. Late tonight, wind chill values will dip to between 15 below to 20 below zero north of Interstate 80. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY There is a low chance of additional light snow Saturday night into early Sunday, mainly south of Interstate 80. Bitterly cold conditions will return this weekend and into early next week.
