Issued at 335 AM CDT Thu May 11 2017 Moisture from yesterday's rainfall and enhanced convergence from an inverted trough reaching north from a weak low north of KSTL was producing widespread low clouds and mostly light fog early this morning. The thickest fog was found along the northwest edge of the stratus deck bisecting IA, with a quarter mile reported at Waterloo, Independence and Olwein. Over the rest of the forecast area, visibilities were generally in the 2 to 5 mile range with patchy drizzle observed over the past several hours. The main synoptic front and focus of thunderstorm complexes has shifted well to the south from the Central Plains to the Ohio River Valley. A weak boundary dropping south into the area today under a developing cyclonic nw flow aloft may produce some late afternoon and evening showers across mainly the north. Otherwise, a period of dry and much quieter weather is expected through the weekend, along with much warmer temperatures. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) ISSUED AT 335 AM CDT Thu May 11 2017 Forecast challenges initially focus on fog trends early this morning, then temperatures and potential for at least isolated showers this afternoon. Will anticipate the high clouds seen on satellite spreading north from convection well to the south to end the expansion of the dense fog in the far northwest early this morning, which was being enhanced by the enhancement along the nearly stationary northwest edge of the low cloud deck. Otherwise, the fog should be mostly of the aviation (2 to 5 mile) variety, and gradually improve after sunrise. Gradual advection of drier air on low level north to northeast winds should lead to a slow thinning of clouds from west to east today. Steepening low level lapse rates, a weak upper level shortwave and enhanced low level convergence along the secondary boundary may trigger at least isolated late afternoon and early evening showers across the north and have introduce slight chance pops for what will most likely be sprinkles. A much more uniform airmass will encompass the entire forecast area with highs in the mid to upper 60s. If more sunshine occurs than expected, going highs could be too cool over especially the west. Tonight: yet another lake enhanced northeast low level flow may set up enough low level convergence to keep clouds in place over especially the northeast. Elsewhere, there should be at least partial clearing with light north to northeast winds. Stayed near a guidance blend with lows from the mid 40s to lower 50s. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) ISSUED AT 335 AM CDT Thu May 11 2017 Forecast focus on mainly dry weather through early next week with temperatures trending above normal for a change. Friday: Northwest flow aloft will keep temperatures near to slightly below normal, with highs around 70 at most locations. The models suggest a weak wave moving through and paint some very light qpf. However, much of the column is dry and for now will keep a dry forecast, but sprinkles are possible. This weekend into early next week: Mainly dry as a deepening trough settles into the Western United States for much of the new work week. In response to this amplifying pattern, heights will rise in the central portion of the nation, allowing for warm temperatures to push into the area. Readings will be above normal for a change, with highs well into the 70s to lower 80s. The warmest day looks to be on Monday where mid 80s are possible in our western and southern counties, as 850 mb temperatures are progged at +20C.
