Like any good winter cyclone, this cold spring storm's impacts
continue to linger beyond the end of the rains. Clearing has spread
over the southwest 1/3 of the CWA tonight, but stratus holds tight
in cyclonic circulation aloft in the northeastern 2/3. Winds remain
strong from the northwest, sustained at 15 to 20 mph with gusts to
25 to 35 mph under clouds at 230 AM in the morning, something you
typically see in a departing winter cyclone. This strong wind flow
with CAA is forcing temperatures down to the 30s gradually from
northwest to southeast.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

The over all upper low trof position will change little during the
day today, and this likely will keep the clouds trends in place.
Clear skies southwest will contrast to mostly cloudy conditions all
day northeast. This will allow for highs to climb to around 60
southwest, and where clouds hold, especially from Cedar Rapids to
the Quad Cities northeast, highs in the lower to mid 50s are all we
can expect. Dry conditions are expected in all areas after 12Z, as
the mid level moisture is forecast to decrease before then. With a
shallower depth of moisture, it is less likely that showers will be
strong enough to get drops down to ground level, as that is just
barely occurring now in the far north.
Tonight, clearing skies are forecast, and with the next system's
cloud cover holding off until Wednesday, we are set up for a cold
night. Frost is expected, especially north of highway 30. Patchy
frost may occur through I-80 counties, but the north is a risk for a
more widespread frost. The sun comes up just prior to 6 AM, or 11Z.
I will keep the advisory going for an hour of sunshine before ending
it, and that seems more than sufficient to allow for a 2 or 3 degree
rise above 33-35, ending the threat.

Wednesday and Thursday...Latest 00z run medium range models continue
to dig and phase plains L/W trof further to the northwest, which
effectively arc's northern extent of deep southern plains wave
northern def zone rain shield further into the southeastern portions
of the DVN CWA this period. Bulk of model QPF occurs from late Wed
afternoon through late Thu morning, with the 00z ECMWF even wetter
than the 00z GFS with over an inch of rain in less than 24 hrs in
the southwestern CONUS of the fcst area including Macomb IL. The GFS
is advertising from a half inch to three quarters in the same area,
which are already water logged from recent rounds of heavy rainfall.
The ECMWF pushes a half inch as far northwest as Burlington IA to
Putnam IL. If this northwest push continues with these amounts,
stratiform nature to the precip and time frame should limit any
flash flood threats, but run-off would aggravate ongoing high river
and stream levels in west central IL an up to the I80 corridor east
of the Quad City area. Will have to watch for additional model runs
and more northwestward creep in rain shield progression over the next
24 hours. For now will expand POPS and QPF amounts a bit to the
northwest with the far west central IL counties getting anywhere
from 0.25 to 0.60+ of an inch by Thu afternoon.
Cloud shield off the deep southern plains/lower MS RVR Valley system
will sprawl north acrs much of the southern half or more of the fcst
area as Wed progresses, and combined with the rain/evapo-cooling,
the forecast mid 50 highs in the southeast may still be too mild. A
flip from the normal high temp ranges, with coolest values in the
far south and milder conditions under the thinner cloud veil to the
north and northwest. Some concern guidance highs too warm on Thu
with cloud cover an an increasing north-northeast sfc winds to 15 to
25+ MPH as strong cyclone deepens over the mouth of the OH RVR
Valley.
Friday...00z medium range model trends with evolving L/W upper trof
acrs the Appalachians and east coast by week's end, making for high
amplitude synoptic pattern acrs the CONUS. With a sharp upper ridge
jutting up the eastern Rockies west of the deep eastern trof, the
upper midwest and western GRT LKS to be in steep northwest fetch and
re-enforcing cool regime into start of the weekend. Even with some
sunshine, Fri may be blustery with a brisk north wind of 15 to 25
MPH and temps struggling to get to around 60 or into the lower
60s...well below normal for Cinco de Mayo. Both the 00z run GFS and
ECMWF hint at a clipper type upper level wave zipping down in near
meridional flow steering pattern for possible light rain bands in
portions of the CWA(especially east) late Fri night into early Sat
morning.
Saturday through next Monday...Longer range trends suggest a type of
large scale Omega block establishing acrs much of the CONUS, with
the local area getting adjusted under the ridge part for a fair WX
weekend and moderating temps back closer to normal values especially
by Monday. Return flow up the plains and MO RVR Valley induced
overrunning rain may try to spill this way by Mon night, but low
confidence in this idea/process at this point. ..12..

While clear skies will be found over southern Iowa, the stratus
will continue all day in northeast Iowa. While mainly MVFR in
nature, the stratus will show some improvement to MVF CIGS through
the late morning hours. For CID to MLI, this forecast could go
either way, as the edge of the clouds is found almost exactly in
line with those terminals. Since that edge is not forecast to move
until this evening, the main impact should be a lifting of CIGS to
VFR today. Otherwise, all sites northwest winds at 15 to 25 kts
will decrease towards sunset to variable and light. Visibilities
will be good through the period.

Current forecasts on most rivers in flood continue with the idea of
trending lower as the widespread recent rainfall has turned out to
be lower than expected. Think additional drops on the Mississippi
are possible before the forecast begin to converge on a solution.
The exceptions continue to be that Keokuk is was placed in a watch
yesterday as it may near flood stage later tonight, and sites along
the Rock have been increased to Moderate. The ongoing forecast for
Keokuk barely brings it to flood stage. With lower confidence, will
keep it in a watch instead of a warning until a better assessment
later this morning can be done. On the Rock River, Como and Moline
were increased to moderate with yesterday's forecast. Again the
extent of crests at these points will have to be assessed later this
morning if they will get as high as forecast.
